One of my favorite parts of aot is the way that’s Isayama writes the his characters in aot, that weren’t straight, white, or male.

I know all of this SHOULD be the standard so I am praising nothing but I truly believe it’s a step in the right direction!!

Aot passed all 3 sections of bechtel test and there is no sexualization any of his female characters. He writes powerful, strong, complex female characters. Mikasa, while a big part of her being her attachment to Eren, is able to over come that and eventually was the one who ended his life. Along with that she genuinely IS one of the strongest, and sickass characters like YES LAWRD. Sasha’s scene where she fought off a tian with nothing other than a bow and an axe, The FEMALE Titan being one of the strongest, Yimir’s Titan scene. Historia imo is the closest possible thing we get to maybe a character written to cater more to men (But then you also get the bomb dropped that she’s lesbian so obviously she isn’t LMAOO) But she even gets one of the coolest odm scenes in the show and is able to escape the grasp of her father and land the final blow to kill him. In both of these characters you see the theme that women don’t need men to be strong. Which is so amazing to see in anime, because I feel like mysoginy is imbedded in so many cultures, especially Japan’s. Isayama the man you areeee

I also love how there are multiple main characters that are canonically LGBTQ+, that exsist without being sexualized/fetishized. Historia and Yimir are a cannon WLW couple never are they written as fanservice to male fans. I also think Hange is great genderfluid representation. The use of he/him and she/her pronouns used for them so causally is the best way to go about writing a LGBTQ+ character imo. I feel like integrating LGBTQ+ characters like Hange into stories, while also making them just as complex as the straight characters is awesome bc bigots just close their minds immediately when the first thing they learn about a character is that they aren’t straight.

Onyonkapon is such a perfect character and His character design is so perf (that man is FINE AS HELL) without stigmatizing the Black community (COUGH COUGH ONE PEICE HELLO) But I know it’s not even their fault as Japan doesnt really have a black population. But still is that a good excuse? I don’t really know and it’s not my place to say. And Levi and Mikasa being the strongest soldiers is cool to me too. Even in anime I feel like Japanese people themselves write to be inferior to white people even in their own media. Like Banana Fish for example. Idk that’s just something i observed in Banana fish, but idk I have consumed enough anime/manga to truly make that statement so actually lmk on that one!

Whole lot of yap I just love aot so much it is the best piece of fiction I have even consumed.

i will go deeper into this one day but for now i just wanna say to all of you weird mfs that for some ass backwards reason believe that reiner didn’t care for bert (bc of the “unreliable” thing which is a whole diff story) or vice versa then i’m gonna need you to have your iq checked to confirm its room temperature

in rts arc, just before bertholdt is expected to transform, he catches a glimpse of reiner and immediately stops what he’s doing to rush and check on him. if he “didn’t care” why would he stop? why would he be so gentle??

and a small thing, just before rts zeke and reiner fought each other to decide whether or not they should get annie back. zeke won and who did bertholdt check up on straight away and hold?? reiner.

and during the last episode (i think) when armin wakes up to see bertholdt stood over him, the only thing that isn’t still being tears running down his face. bc it then cuts to bertholdt forcefully having to snatch up reiner (who hadn’t seen him in so long and had IMMENSE grief and guilt about but im gonna do a more in depth post about their relationship sooner) and try and injure him when that’s the last thing he would ever want to do. he had to allow himself to be controlled and to harm the person he was closest with. he didn’t want to, hence why he cries.

like i said there’s a lot more that i’ll go into detail with sooner or later but you cannot say they didn’t care for each other at all when you have evidence like this. (and not to mention, they were like,,always together?? 💀 they were barely separated from each other)

also this isn’t even necessarily a ship post bc even if you don’t ship them this is all still fact so

Did you like Gabi when she first appeared? Or when was your turning point? Personally I struggled greatly to like her at first but in the end I understand her and care for her.

Oml I HATED her when I was first introduced 😭🙏 I feel like 99% of fans did. I wouldn’t say there’s a clear turning point for forgiving her. It’s very gradual to me. I really honestly had rewatch all that led up to he killing Sasha to fully fall in love with her character. As soon as you rewatch and know what’s going on in season 4 ep.1, and realize they have CHILDREN fighting in the trenches? I can’t help but love her from there, no matter what!

This may seem like an overreaction but im just so sick of the misogyny and hatred spewed to the beautifully written female characters of aot!

If you hate Gabi, I fear you missed the entire point of aot. You’re blaming a LITERAL 12 year old brainwashed by war propaganda, and the promise her and her family will be freed from their oppression if She kills all “bad” Eldians. In any universe if anyone had a chance to free their people from a cruelty they face they are going to do whatever it takes. Wait does that sound familiar?? Oh it’s almost like Eren literally did the same exact thing and no one really bats an eye. Sounds like some imbedded misogyny in our fandom. I’m not unpacking all of that rn so moving on. Is it ok she killed people? No ofc not. But was that on her own behalf and free thinking? From the second she was born she was raised and molded by the Marleyean government to Hate her self and all Eldians. She never had a chance to learn the truth for herself. And what exactly happened once she did learn the truth??? She had her redemption, she realizes what she did was wrong. Which is insanely impressive bc like I said she UNLEARNED YEARS of indoctrination and manipulation. So instead of wishing death upon a 12 year old who is simply a product of her environment, can we just blame the environment instead?? I usually don’t care for getting into arguments about Hange, specifically their gender, because I feel like most people can’t look past it.

Anyway, my issue is that I’ve been seeing a lot of fanart/fics that make them hyperfeminine, wether it be for the sake of wanted them to be hyperfem or changing it so that they have a “cool masculine guy x feminine ‘girl’”

If you draw them as feminine, I frankly don’t care as long as it’s not flat out mischaracterization, like what I’m complaining about.

I’m just repeating myself, but the issue is when people make them hyperfem (or even hypermasc) when they’re not. That’s why their gender is up to interpretation. They’re not hyperfem or hypermasc because their character and personality IS NOT BEING GENDER QUEER. THEIR CHARACTER WILL NEVER BE THAT THEY’RE GENDER QUEER.
