What are important maintenance tips for a car?
BASIC MAINTAINANCE : It's sounds pretty simple, but a lot of people do not keep up on basic maintanance for their cars. It's incredibly simple and in the long run will save you money over the life of your car... this includes:
1) Change the engine oil and filter (and with the proper oil type) in the intervals the manufacturer recommends.
2) Use the type of fuel your car requires and from a name brand oil company (shell, sunoco, hess, lucasoil, texaco, etc...). If your car calls for 91 0ctane, do not regurlaly put anything less than 91 octane. If your car calls for 87 don't bother wasting your money on anything higher... it's all about compression and igniting and not "quality of the gas".
3) Wash & wax it! Grime, dirt, bird droppings, road dust, brake dust, sap, etc... all can have deterious effects on your cars paint, over time they can ruin the paint and potentially accelerate corrosion and/or rust. Also, the dirtier it is, the less economical your MPG will be. Waxing not only protects the finish, but creates more friction resistant surface that air can flow over better.
4) Keep your tires properly inflated! I can't tell you how many people probably never do this... keeping your tires properly inflated helps to prevent so many things, like: accelerated tire wear (shorter than normal tire life), poor ride quality, ineffective braking, allignment problems, poor MPG... etc. Check weekly.
5) When something wears down/out, replace it! Brake pads, air filters, even fuel filters wear out after a while and are ridiculously cheap compared to the damage that can be caused by continuing to use a worn out part. For example: Car struggling to start? Get the battery checked... a battery is cheaper than the damage that may be caused to the alternator.
6) Regularly check other fluids: Your car has several other fluids that peform important tasks to help it function properly; coolant, brake fluid, (possibly) power stearing fluid, etc... now these do not need to be checked often, but a good check whenever you perform an oil change (or have your mechanic check for you, if you bring your car in for an oil change) should be fine. Replace/refill as neccessary.
All of these things will increase the life of your vehicle, and are some of the most simple yet important steps you can take in maintaining it.
