Faces from My Sketchbooks
These are more developed portrait drawing than the doodles from my notes that I’ve been cataloging in my previous post. Although, they still maintain an illustrative quality.

Final Idea- Projects #4 UPDATE
I now understand what Professor Charlesworth meant when he said creating a stop motion film take 50 times longer to edit. I spent 2 or 3 hours editing the other day and ended up with 22 seconds of footage, which is also probably due to this being the first time I’ve used Premiere or done any sort of filming&editing. My film will probably only end up being around a minute long, but I’ve spent so much time and effort into creating it that I don’t mind, as long as I’m happy with the product. The normal film I was working on before I just wasn’t happy about or able to get passionate about or even excited to edit it. A normal film without animation would probably be longer, but I think my stop motion film will still reflect that I’ve put just as much hard work into it.

NEW Final Idea- Project #4
So, I was trying to edit together the footage I had gotten (about half of what I needed) for my first “final” idea and I just wasn’t loving it. I couldn’t get motivated to film the second half of footage either because it wasn’t turning out how I had envisioned. Instead of trying to complete something I knew I wouldn’t be happy with I decided to start fresh. Here’s a description of my new idea (which I’m almost done filming, so I’m not too behind):
A little gnome warrior comes upon a book lying flat. He inspects it and then the book scoots into an upright position with the title, “Gypsies of the Air,” visible. The book slowly opens and the gnome moves forward to inspect it. As he’s reading the book it snaps shut, trapping him inside. The book begins jumping around frantically as he’s trying to escape. Then a foreign looking pegasus (a “gypsy of the air”) flys down and lands atop the book, preventing the gnomes escape.
Depending on how the length of the previous description translates in film time I would either end it there or end it with the gnome escaping and battling the gypsy pegasus.

Project #4 - Progress Report
I’ve completed about half of my video and audio clips. I just have to edit them together and then film the rest of my material. I chose the first “scene” to be a book called “Book Trails” and it has a small canoe and covered wagon prop. The next book is a cover with feathers on it. Inside is two wooden birds; one is pecking the ground and the other will float down into view. the third scene is a book called “How to Find Beasts” and it will have a crab crawling out, then inside a couple animal figures in cages. The fourth book is about Bees and inside is a large bee figure and something to represent honey. The final, end scene is “Flying Gypsies” and I’ll have a flickering lantern float down, then a flying horse and cat will spin around it, they'll fall and the lantern will blow out.

TECH CULTURE POST #5- Review of Senior Thesis Exhibition (Option X)
This was the first Senior Thesis Exhibition I’ve been to at Oakland and I really enjoyed seeing all the different approaches to each Senior’s chosen field. There was a wide variety of pieces from videos, to fine art (drawings and paintings), to photography, business models, graphic design, etc. The three student collections in the pictures above were probably my favorites out of the whole exhibition.
The first is a series of photos by Tiffany Clark. I really appreciated how she used light, composition, and depth to make regular objects into the unrecognizable and abstract. The rich colors, shapes, and shadows in her photographs drew my eye as my mind tried to figure out what exactly I was looking at. Her photographs put into perspective how the seemingly mundane can become something intriguing and otherworldly just by manipulating the environment.
The second is a triptych created by Daija Ginyard. Her piece was accompanied by an untraditional element, two speakers playing a deep heartbeat. I think the accompaniment of this sound really took her work to the next level. It made me feel as though I was experiencing this intimate moment with the subjects in her triptych. Before reading her statement I surmised that the subjects seemed to be in some form of a womb. It’s dark, they’re in the fetal position, and surrounded by a continuous heartbeat. To me her work achieved what art is meant to achieve; to make the viewer think about what the art means and why the artist chose to execute their work in such a way. What point are they trying to get across? She is using a beautiful and moving piece of art to communicate a big issue in today’s society. As she explains in her statement, “Where in America is the Black body safe?”
The third is a series of dust jackets designed by Rebecca (Archie) Foote. The continuity of similar, yet unique, book covers all alined on a shelf was incredibly visually appealing to me. Each jacket reflected the individual story of its corresponding book, while still having a cohesive, over-arching design for the whole series of Poirot novels that she chose. Above all, the design drew me to the book and made me want to investigate it further, which is the whole goal of a well made dust jacket. When reading her statement I discovered she achieved just what she was trying to accomplish: create a dust jacket that appealed to a wider range of individuals, rather than just middle-aged women.

E-X-I->T
I saw this EXIT sign on the second floor of Wilson hall today and thought it was so unique. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve never seen an EXIT sign with that type of arrow running through it. I love how it was designed to be coming off the middle stroke of the ‘E’ and carry throughout the rest of the word, just as your eye would normally read.

FINAL IDEA- Project #4
I decided to go with idea #1, from my previous post. There will be five total scenes inside book covers. I’ll go through the books and props at my house to decide which titles will have scenes inside.

Videos Ideas
Idea #1- Creating a labyrinth with old/vintage books and making spaces that look like rooms with a different, odd, or serene scene inside. Lighting would be very dark, with the camera lighting up its way as it moves through the labyrinth. Maybe some scenes with a book cover opening to reveal a scene loosely related to the title of the book.
Idea #2- Making a compilation of everyday addictions, things people choose to ignore, or maybe just things that people don’t like to talk about. Spending money (burning it), smoke travels to someone holding cigarette, hand comes up, starts over applying chapstick, opens their mouth & spits out food onto table, mug of coffee hovers over food and smashes it, cigarette contents dumped into coffee & stirred, phone next to mug is scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, coffee knocked over onto phone, etc.
Idea #3- A stop motion animation where there would just be an empty room and a table and on the floor next to the table is a muffin. Then an overhead shot of a fork moving to the edge of the table, then side shot of fork dive bombing off table into the muffin. Then another overhead shot of a small army of forks coming to the edge of the table, then they all dive-bomb the muffin too (side shot). Then, once all the forks impale the muffin it explodes.

TECH CULTURE POST #4- New Tech (Option B)
MIT Technology Review Article
Ominous Technology: Artificial Embryos
Researchers have successfully grown an artificial mouse embryo without the need for egg or sperm. They achieved this by placing only stem cells in a “three-dimensional scaffold” and the cells then began to construct themselves into the shape of an embryo through their own accord. And although the researchers aren’t sure of the embryos ability to continue growth into a living mouse, they say their next steps are to try and create an artificial embryo from human stem cells. This would allow scientists to “tease apart events early in development,” but it still seems scary from an ethical standpoint. It would begin a new era of human beings playing God, in a sense, because what happens if these artificial embryos become identical to real embryos and can grow and develop just the same? Another question brought up in the article was “How long can they be grown in the lab before they feel pain?” If these artificial embryos can become identical, how will society accept them when they grow into humans? Will people still consider them humans? Would they act the same? For me the ramifications of this act might not outweigh the benefits. I think there’s too many things to consider from an ethical standpoint to mess around with the potential to create life by bypassing the natural way of doing so.
Inspiring Technology: Pixel Buds by Google
Pixel Buds are a revolutionary new technology that may change the way the world communicates with each other. Although still in development, Pixel Buds create the opportunity for multi-lingual conversations. One user will be wearing the ear buds and the other would use their cell phone. The person with the ear buds in will speak in their language and the app on the phone translates it aloud, into the second person’s language. The second person can then respond and the app will translate their speech into the first person’s language and play it through the ear buds. I think this is exciting because it breaks down social barriers. People of two different languages are now given the ability to have a continuos conversation, instead of just gestures or broken sentences. It opens the door to connections we can make as people in society. This can lead to a better understanding of each other and how we approach communication and solve problems as a community.

INFOGRAPHIC DRAFT
This is a very rough draft of my smoothie menu infographic. I think I’m going to stick with the font I used for the title, unless I find a better one. The colors were very hard to choose, so I don’t think I’ll mess with those much more. The things that need work:
-The smoothie name font will change (I haven’t found a good one yet) and most likely I’ll stack the words instead of having one line, and make them bolder.
-I will add the ingredients in text over their corresponding colors.
-I’m considering removing the build your own portion.
-Maybe I’ll add some illustrations of fruit and vegetables scattered around to make it feel less empty.

TECH CULTURE POST #3- Review of Art Prize 2018 (Option X)
The event I went to was called Art Prize 2018. It’s an annual art competition that takes place in Grand Rapids. Basically any artists can submit their art work and it is then placed throughout the city; on the sidewalks, in parks, on buildings, inside of businesses. The 1,260+ works are on display for about three weeks and people come from all over to walk around Grand Rapids and vote on the pieces they like best or simply appreciate the beauty of the art.
This was the first time I’d ever been and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. To me, it was essentially a city-wide gallery; and my friends and I discovered so many cool things. One of those things is the installment shown in the pictures above, called Sonder. This is one of the pieces that stood out most to me. The artist, Megan Constance Altieri, created multiple rows of clotheslines with garments hanging on them. Each unique piece of clothing has a snippet from an overheard conversation printed on it. I found her work incredibly encapsulating. There was no context, so you were often left puzzled and curious as to what the original conversation was, how it started, and how it ended. As you walked quietly up and down the rows you were struck with the bluntness of each quote. There was no pattern to how the garments were displayed, so it was akin to an emotional roller coaster. I was struck by the juxtaposition of something incredibly sad, something funny, something poetic, something seemingly insignificant, etc. Sonder put into perspective the complexity of all the lives going on around you. Everyone is approaching, experiencing, and responding to life in a unique way. The way the installment was arranged gave me a sense of intimacy as I walked between the pieces of peoples’ lives that enveloped me as they hung above my head. As I continued throughout the piece I became more and more aware of the people who I was experiencing this artwork with. I walked by other Art Prize visitors, also looking up and reading these glimpses into humanity, and I wondered what they were thinking, what sort of snippet might I hear if I walked by one of their conversations?

It’s so much easier for me to work on paper first (graph paper is my favorite), so here’s a rough sketch of my inforgraphic. This is mainly so I can get my measurements how I want them before starting on illustrator.
