A New House, a New Home
In January when Luke had told Johnathan he thought they should move, he was shocked. At first Johnathan rejected the idea telling him that this was the house of his children and he could never leave their memory behind, but then he realized that completely contradicted what he wanted. Johnathan wanted to forget he ever got married to the bitch, but mostly he wanted to forget it was her fault his children were ripped away from his hands all too soon. Luke had meant well, and he knew it too, so finally Johnathan agreed. Luke kept him in the dark for the longest time until in early April when he stood on the kitchen counter at breakfast and announced to the world "We're moving!"
The next few weeks Johnathan had spent packing boxes while Luke had their furniture shipped off to their new home. Luke had said that Ohm was at their new house taking care of most things, giving no specifics of the house itself. So when Ohm had asked if Johnathan was excited to move to California Johnathan froze. California, where a few of his new friends live. He of course froze up. He couldn't let his friends meet him in person, but what's the chances of running into them. California is, after all, a large state.
When it was time to say goodbye to the house Johnathan lingered in the doorway a little longer than he meant to. But that was okay. Everyone understood that this house was a home to his happiest an sadist memories. He stood watching his son running around the living room butt naked pretending to be an airplane while Johnathan chased after him with a bath towel. Once he caught his son Johnathan smiled and said his final goodbye. He saw Luke leaning against the jeep with Bryce and Ryan sitting in the backseat chatting away. This was the start of a new life.
Luke got in the driver's seat, and John followed to sit beside him in the passenger seat. "I call music duty!" Bryce took the aux cord plugging in his phone and playing some indie music Johnathan had never heard before. Still he found himself liking it anyways.
He enjoyed the conversations the four would have, he enjoyed Bryce and Ohm harmonizing to what ever song they both knew. He even enjoyed it when they rolled down the windows and shouted "SO LONG NORTH CAROLINA!" Even Luke pitched in, but he didn't lean out the window like the others did. Johnathan felt fifteen all over again. When it was just him, Luke, and Ohm against the world. They'd drive anywhere they wanted, do anything they wanted. Nobody could tell them what to do, and that's what it feels like now. No one can tell them what to do. Because now they're free.
The twenty hour ride was long and somewhere in that time Johnathan and Luke had switched places. They were somewhere in Texas, beyond exhausted, when Bryce had booked a motel room for the four of them. Usually Johnathan would refuse to stay in an unfamiliar place, but at this point he could barely keep his eyes open.
He couldn't remember stripping down into his boxers, or falling asleep in the uncomfortable bed. However he did remember that Christmas morning. He remember opening his front door expecting to see his ex wife with his children but instead they were replaced with large box wrapped in shining green wrapping paper and topped with a giant red bow. The box was fairly heavy a stunk of rotting meat. But he ignored it...no matter how strange it is. He unwrapped his gift, but when he opened the box he fell over in tears.
Johnathan jumped awake, breathing heavily and tears streaming down his face. Arms tightened around his waist and he looked down to see Luke looking back up at him. "It was just a nightmare. It's over now." Johnathan took in a deep breath calming himself down, before lying back down and curling into Luke's safe arms. "It's over. I promise." Johnathan felt Luke kiss his forehead before drifting into a dreamless sleep.
The sun rose bright and brilliant, and the four boys woke with it. Of course Luke didn't want to wake up and shower. Once three of the four were done showering Ohm made a journey to grab ice water, which Johnathan stole and poured all over Luke. Luke was wide awake and of course chasing Johnathan down with what was left of the bottle. "Come on you two we don't have all day!" Ohm crossed his arms watching as Luke wrestled with Johnathan on floor. "Luke meet us down stairs for breakfast when your done showering. Alright?"
Luke stood not even bothering to help Johnathan up and gathered his clothes for the day. "Alright, alright. But y'all better not eat all the food."
Johnathan chuckled pulling his hand to hide his smile. "Better not take too long then."
Luke grumbled to himself as he made his way into the bathroom, and the others went down stairs to enjoy breakfast. They sat at a small table chatting away, discussing the people they remember from high school, Ohm talked about the people he's met in California, Bryce talked about how he and Ohm met. It had Johnathan smiling, forgetting. They snacked on some poorly made waffles and eggs, which Johnathan drenched in syrup. It helped the food taste better in his opinion. After a long wait Luke has finally sat down with a plate off food jumping into the conversation of how Bryce would look good in a dress. They gathered many strange looks from people sitting at tables next to them, but they didn't care, they were free.
After Luke finished his plate he looked at his phone checking the time. "Well we better hit the road." The four threw away their trash and went back to their room to gather their things.
Bryce smiled deviously as he stuffed his clothes in his backpack. "You know what I think would be sexy?"
Ohm didn't look up on crossed the room to grab a shirt Johnathan had thrown. "Aside from you in a tutu, what?"
"Luke in a bikini."
Luke looked up, confidence painted across his face. "Damn right bitches!"
Laughter erupted in the room, and for a minute Johnathan pitied the family next door. Once the laughter died down the four were back on the road again and this time straight to California. Johnathan hand no idea where exactly in California he'd be living, but that was part of the surprise.
It was late in the night and Luke had started driving once they reached Arizona. Ohm slept with his face against the backseat window, and Bryce was laying in his lap snoring. Johnathan had taken over the music playing some rap music for Luke to sing along too, and every once and a while he would doze off. He was asleep and didn't notice the jeep was parked in front of his new home. "Wake up Princess." Luke shook Johnathan awake then pulled him out of the car. "Welcome to San Diego." Johnathan stood dumb founded. The two story house was painted baby blue with a decent sized front yard. The front porch wasn't nearly as large as his home back in North Carolina but he would get over the downgrade. After all he couldn't expect too much from a suburban house. Johnathan felt something cold and metallic slip into his hand. "Go inside look around. I'll take the other two home. Night." Luke playfully shoved Johnathan before walking back to the car waiting for Johnathan to go inside before leaving.
Inside his furniture was already arranged some boxes littered the living room. The kitchen was large and when opening the cabinets he took a mental note that they needed some work. Which he didn't mind fixing. He used to be the handyman of the house, that is until he fixed everything. The granite needed to be cleaned and the floors needed to be swept, but it was a fairly attractive kitchen none the less.
The formal dining room would probably never be used, but maybe one day it will. The chandler that sat on the ground would have to be hooked up in the morning so it wouldn't get broke. That would be easy. The living room was smaller than his last one and was separated from the kitchen with a half wall. It was...different. But he can adjust.
There were four decent sized bedrooms, that Johnathan was sure two of them would be turned into offices, two down stairs and the other two upstairs. A single bathroom took refuge in the hallway beside the living room, just across from the linen closet under the stairs. The bathroom was large enough to have a shower, toilet and sink. Johnathan was thankful for that. Just beside the bathroom was a small laundry room, already equipped with a washer and dryer.
Upstairs he found a small full bathroom between the two bed rooms, and at the end of the hall, past the master bedroom, a window seat. Johnathan could see himself spending many day sitting there, sadly the seat had a perfect view of his neighbors home and yard. Such an invasion of privacy. Finally Johnathan went to explore the master bedroom, which would be his room. It was large, larger than his last. His bed placed below a window his dresser already built and put against the wall across from the bed. Two doors caught his attention, and so he opened the one closest. A walk in closet, stuffed full with boxes. He closed the door and walked to the other opening it and peeking inside. A bathroom the size of the closet painted ocean blue and decorated with white tile stood behind the door. It had both a shower and a tub he could easily soak in.
He closed the door and smiled. He'd have more time to explore tomorrow for now he wanted to sleep. And so he did.

Spring has Sprung
Rain, Rain go away come back another day...spring has officially sprung and with the beautiful greenery rain followed. Johnathan didn't mind the rain, in fact he found it quite peaceful. He used to adore when it got all muddy outside. He'd stand out on the front porch with Elle all wrapped up in his arms, and watch Michael in his little rain coat jumping around in the mud. Old habits die hard don't they. Every time it would rain Johnathan would find himself standing out on the front porch swaying, like he was still holding Elle.
He took in a deep breath, the smell of rain filling his senses. "Michael don't throw mud at me and your sister." Johnathan whispered a small smile forming on his lips. The memory played in his mind, usually he'd push them away but this one...this one he just couldn't. After he would tell his son to stop the boy would respond with a "but daddy!" And stomp into giant puddle. "No buts little man." He whispered again this time a hand rested on his shoulder making him to jump.
In a hurry Johnathan turned to see Luke's worried expression. Once realization hit him he quickly looked away and pulled the hood of his baby blue jacket over his head. "You were talkin' to yourself again. Doin' okay?"
The garden would look nice this year, it always did when the kids were around. Even if they tore it up half the time. After all April showers bring May flowers. "Yeah I'm fine. Just gonna miss this place."
Luke smiled and leaned onto the railing staring out at the trees that surrounded them. "Yeah me too. Me too." Johnathan took his hand from his pocket leaning it out to the open sky. Rain formed a small pool in his hand, and he was entranced with the water as it did. "Everything's all boxed up. Just waiting on Bryce and Ohm. You excited to see them?"
Ohm...he hadn't seen Ryan since high school. He hasn't heard from him long before the tragedy. Frankly hasn't heard from anyone he knew before the tragedy, and that's what he wanted. He didn't want this constant reminder of his failing father skills. Or the constant questions asking what happened. He just wanted to forget. "Sure I guess. I mean I haven't seen Ohm in forever, I've never met Bryce before, but a friend of yours is a friend of mine. Right?"
Luke simply smiled, pulling Johnathan into a side hug. Johnathan's hand fell back to his side, and he smiled for no reason at all. The rain and Luke could do that to him, call it a strange miracle. None the less it was more than welcome in John's heart. When Luke let go of him he ruffled John's dark brown hair with a hearty chuckle. "Come on we gotta load up the jeep." Luke turned giving a comforting pat onto Johnathan's shoulder and walking back inside. Johnathan looked back at the North Carolina wilderness, this would more than likely be the last time he'd see it.
He turned back to the house, and went back indoors. The house was unfamiliar to him without his things. It was as empty and bare as it was the day he bought it with his beautiful pregnant wife. He can still remember her running around the house telling him that this house will be hers. And she was right. Johnathan was able to buy it off of the widower, and fulfil his lovely wife's wishes. She was completely surprised when he said the house was there's even denied it, but once Johnathan moved their things into his jeep she believed him. "It's so empty." His voice bounced off the walls even though it wasn't loud at all.
Johnathan looked at the stairs to see Luke carrying a box down. He could see himself walking down the stair holding little Elle in his arms watching as Michael rode down the railing like the monkey he is. Once he was at the foot of the stairs that's when the question he had expected that whole week was asked. "Why is mommy leaving?" Johnathan stared at his son giving him a look of sympathy. "Because mommy share her love with other people. Not just daddy."
Luke looked over at Johnathan an expression of guilt written on his face. He knew the move was rough on Johnathan, he didn't know what to expect from his brother. In honesty he expected the man to be kicking and screaming, but he definitely didn't expect Johnathan to be so calm. Maybe it was the rain. "John come on. Grab a box and help me out a bit." Luke flashed a friendly smile before opening the back door and heading out.
Johnathan understood that Luke meant no harm, so he didn't let it affect him. Instead he went upstairs and walked into what was the nursery. He didn't mean to stand in the doorway, but once he saw Elle screaming in her crib with Michael trying to hand her his teddy bear through the railing he couldn't help himself. "Daddy Elle won't stop crying." Michael turned back to face Johnathan. He had a look of worry, he was so protective of his sister. Johnathan couldn't stop himself from walking into the room. "She's grouchy cause she can't sleep." His son pulled at his jacket, it felt so real. But it wasn't. His son and daughter are gone, and he can never have them back. "What's wrong Elle have another nightmare?" He tickled her tiny tummy with his fingertips making the baby giggle.
Suddenly there was a bang forcing Johnathan back into reality. He sprinted out of the nursery down stairs to the source of the bang...which was outside. "Thanks for the help Johnny boy." Johnathan stood dumbfounded, had Luke really finished loading up the jeep?
He stared at the ginger as he walked back indoors, but wasted no time to follow him out of the rain. "I-I am so sorry Cartoonz. I don't know what's wrong with me...I just can't focus. I didn't mean to make you do all the work."
Luke smiled turning back and putting a reassuring hand on Johnathan's shoulder. "It's okay. I get it man." Luke was interrupted by a sudden knock, and looked at the front door making his way to it. "Conversation ain't over man. We'll continue this later."
Once the door was open Johnathan could see two grown men. One familiar face and an unknown one. Luke invited the two in and once the tallest of the two spotted Johnathan a large smile spread across his face. "Delirious get over here and hug me already." Johnathan shuffled over to Ohm, whom towered over him, and hugged him. "Long time no see man." The man said once the pulled apart. "This is a close friend of mine. His names Bryce, Bryce McQuad."
Bryce smiled shyly but somehow still managed to put his hand out to shake Johnathan's. "It's very nice to meet you Johnathan. Ryan hasn't shut up about how funny you seem to be."
Johnathan took Bryce's hand without any hesitation, and he laughed his crazed laugh, it was one that made most people question his sanity. "It's nice to meet you too."
When Johnathan retracted his hand Luke smiled knowing he had done something right. "So you guys excited to be moving to California?"

Christmas Eve Reminder
Winter is always cold, but not always white. It had been a long time since Johnathan had seen a white Christmas, and today was his lucky day. He sat by the window, a smile plastered to his face as he watched the snow fall. He was warm and cozy with his over sized baby blue sweater his sister had bought him last year, and fluffy green "elf" socks, as Luke calls them. The soft glow from the fire place illuminated his small living room, and soon a glow of green and red would help. He took a sip of his hot chocolate, a homemade recipe sent by his friend Evan, and sighed contently. He'd have to thank the Canadian later. Johnathan sat the mug down on the end table beside him, and pulled his knees closer to his chest. Something soft and woolen rubbed against his cheek and before he could investigate the object that rested upon his shoulders he felt soft lips kiss the top of his head, and a familiar chuckle to follow. "Don't be gay." Johnathan smiled.
"You're gay." Johnathan looked up meeting the gaze of his life long best friend. Luke. "You gonna help me decorate the tree so we can cuddle by the fire sooner, or you gonna sit on that lazy ass of yours and stay all toasty warm?"
Luke walked out from behind the couch and sat beside the youngest. His arms laid comfortably on the back of the couch, and Johnathan couldn't help himself but to cuddle into his friends side. Taking the warm blanket with him of course. Luke wrapped a protective arm around his brother, smiling while staring at the properly decorated fireplace. "Well when you put it that way."
Of course Luke couldn't bring himself to pull Johnathan off his ass, Hell he couldn't even bring himself get up. He was too damn comfy. "Feels just like it used too." Luke smiled down at Johnathan. "Just you and me fucking around enjoying the little things. Almost reminds me of when you moved in with me. Our first Christmas together you had absolutely no idea on what to do."
Johnathan giggled, grabbing Luke's hand and playing with his fingers. "The first step to a good Christmas is cutting down you're own damn pine." That quote had been said almost eight years ago, and Johnathan repeating it only made it better.
Luke didn't laugh instead he looked proudly down at his younger brother. "Exactly." Luke studied the room eyes glued to the mantle. Two candles were lit on top of the smooth surface. A ritual John had kept for a year now. Likes eyes wandered down staring at four unique stockings. One was a plain red splashed with glitter glue, and the name Michael written in chicken scratches. The next one beside it was pink with white snowflakes decorating it, and the name Elle written in Johnathan's neat handwriting. Hanging from both ends of the mantle were both Luke and Johnathan's stocking. All of them were stuffed full of goodies no doubt. "It's a shame you don't have the kids this Christmas." Johnathan sighed he could have gone without that subject being brought up. "Would of been Elle's first snow."
Johnathan used to be a proud father. A proud husband for that matter! But now...now he can't bring himself to even mention he had a family at one point. "L-Luke, let's not discuss this."
Luke's arm tightened around Johnathan. "I'm sorry...I thought since you hung their stockings. You were gettin’ better."
Johnathan pulled himself from his brother's grip and stood. He didn't dare look at Luke instead his eyes studied the hardwood. "Let's just decorate the tree, so we can go to bed."
And so the night went on. Carols were sung by Luke, he more so rapped them, causing Johnathan to giggle. At one point Johnathan buried himself in garland and Luke began hanging ornaments on him instead of the tree. That is until he fell over laughing. But in the end, even after throwing popcorn and fake snow at each other, the tree looked as beautiful as ever. Once or twice Johnathan had caught himself admiring the tree while waiting on Luke to bring eggnog and a fuzzy blanket. Johnathan had long forgotten of his Christmas eve reminder, and would prefer to keep it that way. So he did. Today he would spend happily for his children, because he loved them more than the world itself.
"I wanna give you a Christmas eve gift. You know what that is right?" Luke handed Johnathan his eggnog and gave him the blanket. In response Johnathan simply nodded his head and took a sip of the heavenly drink. "Alright stay here, I'll be right back." With that Luke ran upstairs to an unknown destination leaving Johnathan to himself. Johnathan wrapped himself tighter into the blanket and scooted closer to the fire.
His peach skin warmed and seemed to glow in the soft flickering light. His blue eyes reflected serenity and pain, telling the fire his story. A story he wished he could forget. A story he wished he never had. The fire seemed to listen contently to his eyes, or in Johnathan's imagination it did. He buried himself deeper into his blanket and blocked out the sounds of Luke's feet making contact with the stairs as he walked down them. A fairly large pink box was set in front of Johnathan. Instantly Johnathan jumped back trying to crawl away from the box only to find his way into Luke's arms. Tears streamed down his face as he tried to hid himself away from the harmless box, Luke simply held the man rubbing soft circles onto his back. "I know. I know, shhh. It's okay." Luke kissed the top of Johnathan's head and tried to calm the hysteric man. "It's harmless. I promise. I promise. It's a normal gift. I promise." Johnathan buried his face deeper into Luke's shirt. "It's okay. I promise."
Luke scooted them both a little closer to the box and Johnathan continued to silently protest. Once close enough the man gently pulled the ribbon he had wrapped around the box nearly a year ago and set it aside. He took Johnathan's hand in his and eased it to the pink wrapping paper "Elle insisted on the pink wrapping paper. I tried to wrap it in blue for you but she tore it all up and tried tapping little pieces of pink on it." Reluctantly Johnathan's fingers tore into the wrapping paper pulling it away and once it was gone Johnathan began to cower into Luke. "It's okay. I promise." Yet again Luke took Johnathan's hands in his own and lifted the lid of the box off. "Look inside." Cautiously Johnathan opened his eyes and looked inside the box.
Once his blue eyes met with the brown button eyes of a blue teddy bear tears flowed down his cheeks, and they weren't stopping anytime soon. Johnathan instantly pulled the teddy bear out of its cardboard home and cradled it like he would a young child. He used to hate those stuffed bears, but his son Michael loved them. And of course he'd never tell his son how he felt about them, instead he found himself pretending to love them just as much as his son did. Now he loves them almost as much as he does his son. Johnathan didn't realize he was on his knees rocking back and forth, not until Luke wrapped his arms around his waist causing him to stop. "Thank you Luke."
"There's more." Instantly Johnathan looked into the box not letting go of the bear as he did. Inside he found a card, that he'd read later, and a t-shirt that said world's best daddy. His baby girls pink hand prints on the back of the shirt. Tears seemed to flow harder at the sight of his babies tiny hands. He pressed his hand, which nearly quadrupled in size, to the tiny baby print. "It was rough trying to get her to hold still, once her hands were painted so was everything else in the house." Johnathan hadn't noticed Luke himself was slowly falling apart, until he heard the man choke on his words.
He brought his older brother into a hug which was quickly returned. Johnathan could hear Luke sobbing into his shoulder, he hadn't realized he was just as hurt as Johnathan is. "Thank you...i-it means a lot to me. S-so t-thank you." Johnathan was quickly falling apart and it hurt. It hurt so much.
Luke squeezed him a bit tighter, and before Johnathan knew it Luke's sobs had vanished and the man pulled away. "Read the card." Luke reached behind Johnathan grabbing the envelope and handing it to Johnathan. He opened the envelope and pulled out a goofy looking Santa Clause card that Michael no doubt had picked. Once he opened the card he didn't even bother reading the joke, but instead his sons chicken scratch that said "Hapy Chrismis DaDDy." His and Elle's names were scribbled underneath the writing. A year ago John would correct his sons spelling, but now he'd cherish it more than any gem. "Merry Christmas John."
Johnathan looked up at the clock that hung on his pale walls. It's was midnight. He smiled softly looking back down at gifts. "Merry Christmas Luke."
