OKAY SO, I’m reading all of Discworld atm and just finished Sourcery and moved on to Wyrd Sisters. I’ve been enjoying it so far but imagine my surprise when out of nowhere I read THIS
Tumblr media
ITS THE MEME, THE COME HITHER FOOL MEME! I had no idea that was from Discworld and it doesn’t matter at all but now I possess this knowledge and I needed to share it with anyone who didn’t know.

I can't keep having the same conversations about love languages, mbti, iq, bmi, "brain fully formed at 25" and shit over and over again...

sometimes i see cis people say "trans people will understand if you misgender them at first. i call my nephew 'her' all the time and he knows i don't mean it" no he doesnt. he probably never hangs out with you for more than ten minutes because that's how long you can last in a conversation before making him feel like shit. also he thinks you're, best case scenario, stupid for not being able to figure it out, or worst case scenario, uncaring about him and his needs. he doesn't like spending time with you. you're deluding yourself into thinking you're far kinder than you are. you're weird man.

i could not be trusted to make this game because my immediate thought is that the game advertises and markets itself as what op intended but steadily and then rapidly becomes very clear that instead of a cozy cute cottagecore "mystery" the story SHOULD be about the blatant corruption, cruelty, systemic oppression, and persecution and bigotry of her neighbors, but the main character is desperately clinging to the original genre of omg cozy cute and cottagecore because she feels overwhelmed by the potential responsibility to enact meaningful change rather than feel-good aesthetic positivity, thus becoming actively complicit in the town's crimes through her not mere inaction but in fact conscious choice to decide that she will be the protagonist of a cozy cute genre game rather than a story which might challenge her preconceptions of the world and the state of her own community.

One of the reasons night in the woods is so satisfying is like, it takes all these tropes about struggling young adulthood and you see all their relationships with everyone in town straining For Some Unspoken Reason and then it just names the horror. The horror is capitalism, it’s the reason Bea is jealous of and angry about Mae going to college and then leaving, it’s the reason Greg comes across as so irresponsible to Angus, it’s the reason Mae has such a hard time telling anyone why she left college. They can’t fucking afford to live, and if they didn’t have to worry about finances, none of their relationships would be as strained as they are.

capitalist-centric horror/corporate horror is such an interesting concept to me. like, the idea of taking something that is so (unfortunately) mundane in many people's lives in our current societal landscape and either perverting it or amplifying all aspects of it to create a horror experience is just so beautiful to me.
games like night in the woods (which technically isn't horror but is still relevant as a game creating a psychologically horrific atmosphere for the point of commenting on capitalism's effects), lethal company, night of the consumers, employee of the month (great game i rlly recommend), mouthwashing, happy's humble burger farm, yuppie psycho and MANY more games that don't fit neatly under a specific category outside of a general conception of what "horror games" are.
those kinds of things are fascinating because of the way they combine traditional "horror" (scary monsters, jumpscares, blood and gore) with the stress caused by something like a normal 9-5 at a corporate office, or the concept of working conditions at a packing plant.
it makes you think about how normalized the conditions we as humans exist in, and how despite that people are calling out that normalcy, whether simply through setting and plot or specifically through intention and subtext. it's definitely a genre of game that i'm excited to see more from and something i really want to think more about
(this was inspired by the jacob geller video essay discussing labor in both NITW and Tacoma)
