Marron barked happily at the attention. There were few that wanted to get too close to the large, fluffy ghost dog, but it always warmed Rei’s heart to see someone not be afraid. Even if she was one of the stronger on his team, he knew well that moments like this were some of her favorite. 

“I-it’s good to meet you both. I-I’m Rei, a-and yeah… I work primarily with ghost types nowadays.” It wasn’t always the case, but it hadn’t taken too much to adjust to their needs, especially since he had a good idea of it even with his past team. “I take it you’re one, too? A-and not from Paldea either, it seems.” 

The last time he saw a Litwick, he was at home in Kitakami, but that was ages ago. He definitely missed how cute they were, even if they were a bit of a hassle, too. “Wickles seems to be adjusting well to the region, though… e-even if the environment isn’t great for wild ones…”

Once given permission, Alda wasted no time in cupping the Houndstone’s fluffy face and giving her a proper rub while being extremely cautious of her stone.

“Who’s a good girl? You’re a good girl!” Alda cheers with a bright smile while her litwick wiggles on top of her head. She looks up, beaming as she continues ruffling Marron’s ears.

“Name’s Alda! This is Wickles. Wickles say hello!” Alda cheers and the Litwick cheers with her before giving a puff of its flame in greeting. “I haven’t seen very many trainers with ghost types out this way, are you a ghost trainer?”

Senri huffs a bit, amused by the question. Ghost types weren’t always sensitive to little things like this, though the aura around Lynn had put him on edge, especially with how close she was getting with Rei and so quickly. 

“A feeling I suppose is the right way to put it… you are someone that carries… a certain tragedy with you.” Exactly what he wouldn’t be able to say. Even if he listened, he still only knew about Paldea and Kitakami, and while Rei read about the rest of the world, Senri didn’t see the reason to care about places they would theoretically visit. 

 “Though your other question… it is hard to describe… but yes… he is haunted in other ways.” Senri just being there was proof enough of that. If things hadn’t gone the way they had during Rei’s first trip to Area Zero, perhaps this would be a very different conversation, one where Senri wouldn’t have to worry about his trainer. 

But, she also had interest in Area Zero, maybe for a different reason than Rei did, but Senri remembered very well the last time someone went down there with Rei. Sure, Lynn was stronger than Elian had been, much stronger, but that didn’t stop the fear that the ghostly fox felt about even thinking of experiencing that again.

The sun had barely even risen yet, when Tsuki had dragged Lynn out of her Paldean hotel room to go on one of of their early morning walks. A very early one at that. No matter. She was still fairly restless. So maybe some fresh air could help? No deliveries notifications were showing up yet.

Most of Mesagoza was quiet at this hour. And only a few shops were open. Eventually she came to rest at one of the benches. Hold on, on did she remember to bring her room key with her. It was when she was searching through her bag did she hear Senri's almost ominous sounding warning.

Her mightyena was the first to perk up noticing the Hisuian Zoroark's presence. On guard, til she could notice by scent who they were. It took a moment for Lynn to realize it was one of Rei's pokemon. Though she didn't see him anywhere around.

"Ehh?? What makes you think something is haunting me?" she asked, the question sounding rather rhetorical considering. Could ghost types really pick up on something like that? But there was one part that caught her attention. It wasn't like they knew her exact details of her past life at Aether Paradise, right?

"I.. I have no intention of going after anyone. Not sure why you would think that." Should she be insulted. They were giving mixed signals. She was an acceptable enemy? Well that was -something-.

"Hold on, what do you mean 'too'? Are there others already who are?"

"Ahh!! W-when did you-? A-actually, might be my own fault for not noticing..."

"Though, honestly... i-it might not be so bad becoming one if it means I don't have to keep dealing with P-paldean summers..."

“Are you studying the lifestyle of the ancient hermits now?”

Yes, he's been doing field work in the mountains for a while now, and no, he's not coming down the mountain until the seasons change, why do you ask?

My only hot take with pokemon is that I think they should add Lick to Eevee's level up moveset and give it a ghost type evo with the same requirements as Sylveon. Depending on which is higher in the movepool depends on which one it evolves into.

He's more of a tea drinker, though, he has been known to use caffeine to stay awake for a few days whenever his work required it.

It didn’t surprise him that Chi-Yu was the one that caught her attention. The strange little fish like pokemon was one that suited her quite well, even if the association with envy didn’t suit her quite well… as far as Rei knew at the very least. “Y-yeah, Professor Raifort can often be found there… p-probably more than in the classroom sometimes, b-but that does make her quite easy to find…” 

He nods in understanding as he listens to her talk. It didn’t surprise him that pokemon considered guardian deities would only appear rarely to the point that any outside of a select few people would see them relatively often, though it only made him more curious to see what they would be like in person rather than just descriptions in books that he managed to get about them in the library. 

“Y-yeah, of course, I’ll look forward to when the time is right to talk about it more.” Whenever that was. Though, he would have to be careful. While some of his research was available to the public through the league, the vast majority of it was private…something he was starting to think they had in common before those thoughts were interrupted by her excitement. 

A little chuckle leaves him at his own surprise as he listens. “It doesn’t sound silly at all. I-I can understand entirely…” Even if he didn’t use his old ace anymore for a number of reasons, his Gengar, Yoru, used to be a good luck charm for him. Something about that smile… either way, he could completely understand her way of thinking. 

“Are you sure about that? I-I think I’m a little old for those sort of things…” He wasn’t entirely sure, if he were honest, though, he was an adult… and he had already completed a journey, but if it were possible… maybe he could at least consider it once he was done with his research that required him to be in Paldea. 

“This might sound like a morbid reason… b-but I heard that those ruins represent the end of a life’s journey…It just felt… fitting to want to see those the most…” A part of him was just curious to see how his pokemon reacted to that sort of place. Even if it wasn’t literal, if the energy was right, they would be rather happy to simply enjoy it, though he wouldn’t know without seeing it for himself.

"A class?" Now that he mentioned it, her memory was jogged a bit perking her up slightly.

“Actually yeah, that sounds about right. I was around the school library I believe when I heard some lecture regarding the Ruins of Treasure. If I can remember correctly there was one about Chi-yu that did catch my attention.” In all honesty this translated to she was distracted from doing her own work to listen in on the nearby class discussion. 

She couldn't help but elicit a chuckle when it came to the Island Guardian in Alola. "Eh, to be honest I haven't had much interactions with them myself. I mean not directly, ya know? Sometimes they would show up at a festival. Either for the Island Challenge or one to choose a new Kahuna."

It was apparent as they spoke that the idea of research was still something of importance to her. Even if at times it was very complicated to get underway. No doubt there was a sense of secrecy involved. So she was relieved that he wasn't pushing the subject too much. "I cannot blame ya for any curiosity you may have. Sooo when the time is right, how about I'll tell you a bit more?"

It was the least she could offer in exchanging ideas and more so truths about what either one of them had been up to. Whether it was her expeditions to Ultra Space or Rei's time in Area Zero.

"Oh!" a small excited gasp came from her as Rei mentioned the Ruins of Hope. "I know exactly where that place is!" she leaned forward clasping her hands together. More so she was becoming more expressive in her actions. "It's right along Poni Breaker Coast. Where I first met Ariadne. I know it sounds silly but I kinda consider that sharpedo my good luck charm."

Maybe it was because of Tapu Fini's presence around the island that the water types there were seen in such a fashion. To be revered as something more positive than what was written in the pokedex about them. "Eh, it's never too late to sign up for those trials."

"I'm not surprised that historian such as yourself would want to see one of the island ruins. But I'm even now more curious. Why that one in particular?"

He has a very bad feeling about this, but he doesn't quite know why yet.

“Well, there's only one way to find out, you know?”

Nico's taking Rei out for a night of fine dining. The food is raw dough of all kinds.
