Traditional and Digital Art
When I create any type of art, I love using a variety of materials. Depending on what I want to make, one day I will want to use charcoal to draw a portrait, and the next day I will feel like painting with oils. Other times I am happy to draw in my sketchbook with a pen and add splashes of color with watercolor. Basically, I am not tied to any one material.
A few years ago, I took a trip to California and stopped by an old friend's art studio. She had been drawing these amazing digital paintings on a Cintiq tablet, and she let me try it out. Drawing on the Cintiq was amazing, and I knew that I had to have one, too! I did not know how I would get one, but for the past three years it was what I was dreaming about! It felt like you were drawing directly on the screen, and you could easily switch between different "media" such as marker, watercolor, pencil, etc. It was so easy, accurate and fun to use.
Recently, I was extremely fortunate to get one. I started working on the illustrations to my second book using it. The first two days that I set it up I did not stop drawing for 12 hours each day! I was so engrossed in what I was doing that time seemed to stand still. Actually, I did not know where the time went at all. I was able to finish two illustrations to the book I am tentatively calling The Smock. Although I will probably be making some revisions to these later, here they are:
I used the Cintiq to sketch, color, and "paint" using the different settings. The Cintiq allows so much control and accuracy that it feels like a real pen, pencil or paint brush when you're using it. I am not going to give up drawing on paper any time soon because that is something that I will always love. Sometimes you just want to express your thoughts that way. But for someone like me who likes to incorporate different materials into one drawing anyway, the Cintiq makes it easy to do just that. I am looking forward to creating more books with it, while completely losing track of time in the process.
What about you?
