This is an anti-olivia rodrigo rant. Don’t like it? Block me.
I don’t like Olivia Rodrigo. Here’s why.
Exploiting a Teenage Love Triangle
For reference, here is a timeline and a compilation of all the death threats, harassment and bullying that both Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett endured for well over a year and are still enduring. [Sabrina’s Post] [Joshua’s Post]
Thank you to @disneylovetriangle and @iammarriedtothemusic for compiling these!
I won’t go back and tell you all the details as, like I stated before, a better, a more detailed timeline has already been made. However, the quick run down is: In 2019, there was speculation that Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett were dating. In 2020, there was speculation that they had broken up and that Joshua was with Sabrina Carpenter. In 2021, Olivia released a song that was about a break up and the public connected the dots to Joshua and Sabrina. Now we’re here.
Her song “drivers license” went viral. Tik Tok began stirring the pot by creating a narrative that the song was about Joshua and Sabrina. That’s when shit hit the fan. JB and SC were literally BOMBARDED with hate. Mind you, this was right BEFORE either of them “responded” to the hate. They hadn’t done anything yet, and were being attacked on all of their socials.
Like I stated before, @iammarriedtothemusic has done a MUCH better compilation of the shit they both went through, but I’ll pull some pictures here so you can get a taste of what was going:
*** Unfortunately, You can still see these disgusting comments on several of their posts, but especially these: [X] [X] (Just in case you want to look yourself). If you want more proof, go on their Tik Toks from this time. It’s so vile that I personally don’t want to do it, but I’ll give you the links: [X] [X] Thankfully, a lot of the death threats were removed for violating user guidelines.
You can’t control fans and the public. That’s valid. However, you CAN control your friends and family. Guess who’s family and friends were taking the time to be messy on twitter?
Sabrina released skin on 01/22/2021. Here’s what some of her friends and family were saying:
Cameron Kasky, a close friend of Olivia’s (Google):
*** Words that Rhyme with blonde
The prick doesn’t even know what a diss track is? If you think “Skin” is a diss track enlarge your music taste. It’s also worth to note that there’s a rumor that he introduced high school aged Olivia to 24/25 y/o Adam Faze. What a great friend! (sarcasm)
Her close friend, Iris Apatow, everybody! (Google) [I’m not sure what relation Olivia has with Benj Pasek, but apparently they have met/worked together]:
Her friends are literal weirdos.
I would like to add that Olivia’s ACTUAL FATHER liked these tweets:
[Source from a non-livie] [Source from a livie]
Guess being a shitty person runs in the family. The people that she hangs around with truly show her actual character. Mind you, not a SINGLE person on Sabrina’s or Joshua’s side (family, friends, or corworkers) were saying anything about the drama at all. In fact, Sabrina and Joshua’s SIBLINGS were being harrased just for posting photos of themselves and having the audacity to exist by her brain dead fanbase.
Also, Iris Apatow is racist and her whole family is know for being rude and pretentious. You’re the company you keep around, as they say...
This being from 2021!
Her response to the hate? Her fake Minnie Mouse laugh saying “it’s kinda funny” and that her song once it’s out into the world is “that’s none of her concern.” [X]
[Full Video if you want to check it out]
I’ve literally never wanted to punch someone more in their smug face than after watching this video. From a PR perspective, saying that she doesn’t condone hate would have skyrocketed her appeal. From a money perspective, staying silent or being coy would have earned her more $$$.
Nonce of your concern? Joshua Bassett was literally DYING in the hospital at this time due to septic show and your fucking fans were hoping that he died?
[Source from Insta] [Source from HEALTH.COM]
*** If you scroll through the comments, you’ll see people saying that he just should have died or that “she” ran him over.
Olivia knew about this. They were currently filming HSMTMTS, so she defiantly KNEW about this.
Imagine KNOWING SOMEONE IS DYING and on top of that have a large chunk of people laughing and hoping for his death BECAUSE OF YOU and you... don’t do anything about it. Nasty.
Also, I don’t believe Olivia caused his health condition. That’s stupid. What I think is nasty is that he was dealing with a medical condition that had a 30% survival rate (which she knew about because they were co-workers at the time) and her fans were sending him literal death threats and her only response was to laugh. There are few things that are more vile. Any other celebrity would have been crucified.
Thankfully, Joshua and Sabrina aren’t shit people and actually asked their fans not to send any hate when the music that they sent out into the world was getting misinterpreted:
[Source]
(a Text Joshua sent to his fans)
The drama got so big that SNL, one of the most popular late night show in the United States, made a sketch about it:
[I couldn’t find it on YouTube so here it is via Twitter]
Sabrina and Joshua were mentioned BY NAME and Sabrina was insinuated to be a bastard.
“My bitch ex-Gina is Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter is that bastard Enzo” This whole skit was not even funny, but weird??? They were praising Olivia so much I wonder if they were paid to. SNL already is pro-Depp and and made a Zionist sketch so I’m not surprised that they’re always on the wrong side of EVERYTHING.
... No comment.
The hate for Sabrina and Josh lasted for months. Here are some comments that were left on Sabrina’s birthday in MAY.
[Source] [Some more comments]
** Also most people pointing this out aren’t even Carpenters, but KPOP STANS. Imagine your fandom being so shit that other fandoms are defending someone they don’t even stan.
Just leaving this video of Sabrina here:
Around this time Josh came out as Queer.
... You can imagine all the slurs that were being thrown his way at this time.
Olivia never said anything about the hate Josh was receiving. However, she did mention that she didn’t “condone hating other woman” via Variety.
[Source]
THAN WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY THIS IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY? At this time, the drama had pretty much died down, but I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that Olivia released a new single a week later, no?
To top off this stupid mess, it was rumored that this song had NOTHING to do with Sabrina. The original lyrics were “brunette” NOT blonde.
There was a rumor that Joshua was dating a girl named Alyssa Jirrels, who WAS 19 at the time and had dyed blonde hair in that year (but she was originally brunette).
Here’s a video reference the “19″ part:
*** This was released on her Insta stories in August 2020. Sabrina was 21 at the time. Alysa was 19 and turned 20 at the very end of the month.
Here’s Joshua and Alyssa in July 2020:
A picture of them together:
“Maybe blonde was the only rhyme”. Poor Sabrina knew that Olivia’s management/team/label whatever changed it to add fuel to the fire and I’m 99% sure that this lyric is calling it out. Really fucking gross that someone is receiving death threats over a situation that had NOTHING to do with.
A lot of this girl’s freak fans kept annoyingly saying that Olivia wasn’t insulting Sabrina because she called her “kind” in a song... that song was written when Olivia was 16. Joshua and Sabrina weren’t spotted together until summer of 2020, when Olivia was 17. So that song isn’t even remotely about Sabrina.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8Nas_9LE44
*** Videos aren’t loading so here’s a link!
Now, imagine being in Sabrina’s shoes. Getting death threats and slutshamed fr SOMETHING THAT YOU DIDN’T DO?? Would make me go insane.
Interestingly enough, Olivia admitted to not even knowing who Sabrina is (Timestamp given later). So, you’re aware that a 21 year old girl is getting abuse and threats because of you and you’re not doing anything about? Prentending she doesn’t exist or matter so you don’t feel that much guilt over the public witch hunt these two innocent people faced?
Also, clearly Olivia knows who she is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfU6sACxvAw
Also, Olivia has had previous relationships. Assuming that all her songs are about Josh is wrong.
Also, her ex, Ethan Wacker, is a Trumpie.
Also, they’re still friends.
He was liking those tweets in April of 2020, she congratulated him in May of 2020. Why the hell are you still friends with a Trumpie and why was he begging people to stream your album? Source If they weren’t friends he would have no business doing this.
I haven’t been keeping up with Josh a lot, but he released a trio of songs about the situation and the replies from her fans were horrific. [x]
I have more to say but this is just a compilation of all the shit that was done at the time.
Plagiarism
[An article from Buzzfeed, but there are several sources for this].
I picked Buzzfeed because one of the commenters perfectly described my opinion:
“Really surprised by some of the comments that are getting extreme in defending her. I agree an 18-year-old shouldn’t be bashed, especially since she now gave credits, but saying that every artist ever copied other people’s songs just isn’t true. There’s a huge difference between being inspired by someone (e.g. Greta Van Fleet & Led Zeppelin) and directly singing different lyrics over the exact same melody. Not the same AT ALL. Also, I get that as we progress in time, new melodies & chords are becoming rarer, but then again, there is a freaking ton of indie / lesser known artists of different genres that have never copied any song & that write their own music. Some examples would be Weyes Blood, The Marías, The Hate Club, Beach Bunny, Chicano Batman, Emma Ruth Rundle…honestly, there’s so many talented musicians out there that don’t copy & that aren’t much older, so while we shouldn’t bash Olivia, we also shouldn’t find excuses for what she did.”
It should have been super simple for her to properly credit Paramore and Taylor Swift, since she is their “fan”. But alas, money and fame is more important to her.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBSZ5yvB5mo
Out of her 11 released songs, four were openly plagiarized.
“Good 4 U” - Plagiarized “Misery Business” by Paramore. Josh Farro sought legal action and received credits for him and the rest of the band.
“Brutal” - Plagiarized “Pump It Up” by Elvis Costello. Elvis did not seek legal action but admitted that they were the same.
“1 Step Forward, 2 Steps Back” - Plagiarized “New Years Day” by Taylor Swift. Reports vary, but some state that Taylor received credits immediately while other’s say she didn’t receive credits until the Deja Vu situation.
“Deja Vu” - Plagiarized “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift. After Josh Farro sought legal action, Olivia’s team GAVE Taylor’s team credits. Taylor’s team did not seek credits for this song in particular, Oliva’s team gave them credits WILLINGLY. (Write that down, dumbasses that hate Taylor for this). Olivia admitted that Deja Vu was inspired by Cruel Summer via Rolling Stone.
Jack Antonoff (who is accredited for 45% of the song, while Taylor Swift is the other 45% and St. Vincent, who Olivia is friends with (x)(x)(x) and worked on songs with on her new album (”obsessed”), gets 10%) didn’t even know they were going to be credited until much later.
St. Vincent “stole” 10% of Deja Vu’s earnings, why would Olivia want to work with someone who stole from her?
Interestingly enough, one of my points is that she’s also an industry plant. Upon doing research for this rant, I never saw a single negative headline for Olivia, even during the plagiarism scandal. I’ve been reading a lot about Meghan Markle and how horrible the press treats her, and a lot of readers pointed out that several of these headlines were (allegedly) paid by the Royal family to keep from the horrific allegations of Prince Andrew. Rough comparison, but the media is swayed by whoever has the money and power. Would not surprise me a bit if Olivia’s team was paying for these article to paint her as the victim, but luckily people are smarter than that. (x) It makes sense as to why so many legit news sources were talking about a boring teenage breakup, I’m assuming they were paid by Interscope/Geffen Records.
Some excellent points made in the comments section:
“She may not know all of the ins and outs but she should listen to her team and if her team didn't mention it then they failed her. BUT she is also 18, not some 10-year-old writing music. Hayley from Paramore was 18 when the band was formed in 2004. I can assume she was writing music before the age of 18. I can also assume that the songs on their first album that came out in 2005 were written in the years leading up to it. She didn't completely rip-off another artist's song/songs and put them on an album. There are a lot of artists in the pop-punk scene like Paramore that start at the same age as Olivia and didn't have to give up their royalties to other artists. Artists can be inspired by other artists but most know what line to not cross.”
*** I would also like to point out that Taylor released her debut album at 16 and has had over 250 songs released since then and has NEVER had to give up writing credits. I believe she’s in a legal battle for “Shake It Off” but regardless, she’s in that legal battle because she believes she didn't plagiarize. Olivia’s team never even fought in a court of law.
Another valid comment that I STRONGLY agree with: “@HmmFeed she definitely doesn’t write all of her music. People wouldn’t accuse her of copying if there wasn’t some truth to it, and I’m absolutely sure no one would give up that much money just because some people are upset lmao. She gave it up because she did in fact rip off those songs.”
Why would anyone in their right mind give up millions of dollars for something that they didn’t do? She’s under Interscope, one of the biggest and most successful record label who could have easily found her one of the best entertainment lawyers in the country, and if what her freak fans were saying were true and Taylor “stole money from Olivia!!1!!”, then she could have also countered that with legal action as well. But she didn’t. She WILLFULLY gave writing credits. Taylor’s team did not lift a finger.
Also, speaking of Taylor sueing people, she sued a man that SEXUALLY ASSAULTED her for one fucking dollar. She also refused to put her music on Spotify until artists were paid better royalties. Literally have no idea why it would make sense to ANYONE as to why Taylor would do this. Feels like a campaign made by Olivia’s team.
Here’s what her freak producer said: “Meanwhile, producer Dan Nigro said: "It seems like people get funny about things when songs become really popular."
Funny for him to say that considering both Taylor and Hayley could buy and sell his ass WITHOUT the money earned from the stolen songs, so what’s the problem here? Scared that you got caught?
Not only music, but she also plagiarized several other concepts like photoshoots and music videos.
Courtney Love: [Same hair style, crowns, makeup, purple background and flower bundle.]
Pom Pom Squad:
Copying someone this many times is genuinely so fucking embarrassing, especially when you have a HISTORY of being unoriginal.
Rina Sawayama: XS v. Brutal
Copying an entire music video concept is surely interesting.
So, sure, these are all accidents right? Olivia would NEVER do this to a young Asian girl, right? Wrong.
A K-Pop star named Yena released a song called “Hate Rodrigo” that is actually just a song praising Olivia. Scenes were cut because they were “too” similar to Olivia’s MVs and because they included Olivia’s image.
So Olivia didn’t like that Yena essentially made a song with a bunch of backhanded compliments? Good thing Sabrina isn’t as much as a petty loser, or “Lacy” wouldn’t exist.
What’s interesting about this whole plagiarism debacle is that in her stolen song “Deja Vu”, Olivia’s team hired an actress that looked just like Sabrina and even copied some stuff from Sabrina, a song that is ironically about another girl being an Olivia “copy”. I mean... if you’re going to dislike someone for copying, at least don’t do it yourself. Also, Sabrina’s street is clean, she’s been famous since she was a baby and knows when to give credit and when not to. But someone who copies others regularly would be the first to accuse other people of doing the same.
Different hair colors, identical faces.
Sabrina in Alien MV:
Green dress:
... ok.
AAVE Misuse
Ending this rant on these videos and photo because they are quite funny. She doesn’t talk like this at all and it’s cringey seeing her try instead of just speaking in the way a normal person from an upper middle class town in California would talk.
https://twitter.com/beytilldawn/status/1420466512343838720
Okay I have the industry plant rant in the drafts, dunno if I’ll post it but it’s there.
