ACOSF hasn’t even been published yet, and the invalidation of the victim has already begun. It astounds me how ignorant of trauma some people in this fandom are.

Nesta is not her trauma. Nesta is not a a selfish, cruel bitch who doesn’t care about others. Nesta is struggling to cope with the traumatic, horrific things she has gone through. Not everyone handles trauma in the same way. Things get messy, and it hurts. It’s the victims and it hurts the people around them.

It is okay to be upset/unhappy with how Nesta handles her trauma. I bet she is too. It is okay to dislike that Nesta lashes out when she feels the need to protect herself. Its hard to watch. It’s not a pleasant experience for her either. It’s okay to be disappointed with how poorly Nesta interacts with her family/acquaintances.

It is ignorant, and unacceptable, to say that her traumatic experiences aren’t as valid as other characters. It is ignorant, and insensitive, to disregard the neurological effects of trauma and how this impacts interpersonal relationships, behaviors, and cognitive (thought) processes.

SJM frequently handles intense topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and the effects of child abuse/neglect among other things. She’s done an excellent job of bringing awareness to these topics and she portrays them well in her characters.

These books provide an opportunity to learn about the impacts of mental health through character dynamics and development. If you feel the need to invalidate the struggles of Nesta, and choose not to educate yourself/understand the impacts of trauma on the characters, then I have no idea what you’re doing in this fandom.

Take it elsewhere.
