Dust Watched: Idoly Pride

“Idoly Pride”’s first 9 episodes are insanely boring. The story would normally be just about a group of girls improving, becoming idols and taking on a big challenge, your standard idol stuff. They tried to spice things up a bit with the introduction of 1 (one) supernatural element. This is all spoiled in the first 1 minute of the 1st episode either way so I’ll just say what it is; the very 1st episode only focuses on Nagase Mana who’s an incredible idol with a steady climb to the very top. She asks her classmate, Makino, to be her manager and both of them start to work under Hoshimi Productions. At the end of episode 1 however, Mana dies in a car accident and yet her ghost appears only to Makino and follows him around until 3 years later where the current story of the anime is happening. 2 girls with connections to Mana join the agency, one being her little sister Kotono and the other Sakura whose singing voice is the exact same as Mana’s. With an additional 8 girls in the company, Hoshimi Productions prepares them to become their first idols since Mana’s passing, with Makino at the helm as their manager.

The reason the anime fails in my eyes for most of its runtime is that we’re more told about things than see them. Up until episode 9 there are only TWO full performances we see. The girls’ practices also aren’t animated just skips from “Ok, let’s train” to “Whew, that was exhausting”. Visually, we barely see these girls improve, making their quick success after debut feel kind of just… meh? It feels unearned in a way. The anime does become what I wanted it to be in the last 3 episodes. Multiple performances, new songs and some insight into fellow top idols, their personalities and goals. These episodes are the only reason this went from a 5 to a 6.

While the 10 idols under Hoshimi Productions all have varying personalities and colours, it’s somehow underutilized. The anime isn’t afraid to go deep in the feelings department so I don’t quite understand why there was barely any more serious conflict shown between the girls when they first group up. It’s there, but the conflicts are short and easily resolved. A lot of the girls also fade into the background after their “importance” has been established, probably the worse victim being Nagisa. She is Kotono’s only friend and joins in the story where Kotono is still having trouble communicating with her teammates properly. However, as I said, the issue is quickly resolved and Nagisa might as well not even be there from that point on, that’s how little she is shown. The main culprit in stealing the girls’ screentime is Makino. He is utterly bland and boring and isn’t shown to do much of anything really. His conversations with ghost Mana take up quite a bit of screentime despite the fact that… their scenes just have no point? Most people are going to symphatize with these 2, especially after the finale, but their presence and story is just a very cheap way of trying to elicit emotions out of the viewer which, as you can see, didn’t work on me. I actually think that Kotono and Sakura’s journey would’ve been much more impactful if Mana wasn’t actually there. I would’ve cut out 99% of Mana and Makino’s screentime and instead would’ve focused on the girls doing smaller gigs so show their improvement and interacting with their rival idols.

The art is very typical of idol anime, with the sparkly eyes, bright colours and flawless close up shots. But I’ve also noticed that trying to keep this quality up, a lot of dynamic movements need to be sacrifised, which is why the anime has so few dancing parts. The performances are a mix of 3DCG and 2D. The 3DCG models looked fine but in some episodes there was that insane framerate drop during the 3D parts which made my head hurt. Thankfully this issue isn’t present in the last few episodes where the majority of the performances happen.

Hands down the best part of this IDOL anime is the music. Compensating for the lack of actual in-story performances are the EDs of which there are 7 of. While I as mostly drawn to LizNoir’s stuff as I’m into rock like“The Last Chance” and “GIRI-GIRI borderless world“ my favourite was actually “song for you” which has an ethereal instrumental that made me feel like I was floating among the clouds on a starry night. After finding out the story behind this song, the lyrics just make it even more of an otherwordly experience.

“Idoly Pride” is above most idol anime purely from a techiical point of view but its story and characters suffer from poor pacing. Great music, though!
