I witnessed something wonderful on my walk today.
We went down to the park, where the lake drains under a footbridge into a stone-lined gully that someone generous might call a creek. Usually itâs a trickle at best, but it poured last night, and the water was still moving pretty briskly.Â
As we got closer, I heard kids yelling, so we went over to have a look. I was nervous, because earlier this summer weâd seen a mother cat and her kittens hanging out a few times in the (then bone dry) spillway. We hadnât seen them in over a month, but I didnât want to think of them being there when the water started coming down.
Instead, when I looked over the side of the bridge, I saw a skinny kid (maybe 8-10 years old) carrying an enormous catfish clasped in both arms.
The catfish had to be the length of this kidïżœïżœs torso, and it was flopping around trying to escape, but the kid doggedly kept climbing over mud and slippery rocks until he reached the lake and chucked the fish in. And behind him came⊠another kid, holding a fish.
When the lake flooded, it mustâve washed a bunch of these catfish downstream, where they collected in pools. Now the water levels are starting to go down, and the fish are trapped, doomed to dry up and die. Not on these kidsâ watch. As we watched, they rescued four fish, and one of the adults present said there were at least six left. The kids showed no sign of stopping. This is the kind of thing you love as a kid, a life or death mission you can throw your heart and soul into while getting gleefully covered in muck and slime. I was tempted to offer my assistance, but this was their Quest, and I did not want to impose.
When we continued on, the Great Fish Rescue was still going strong. Godspeed, kids. In a time of such great discord and meanspirited behavior, you will live on in my memory as a beacon of goodwill.Â

I think if you have chronic pain everyone else should have to spend every single day telling you how incredible you are for staying alive and paying you money and making treats for you

Had a conversation with a housemate earlier and I want to reiterate this on the internet. Speaking as a disabled person, whoâs been Officially Disabled on paper for more than a decade: I literally do not give two shits if those twits who are taking horse dewormer - the ones seriously damaging their health longterm, what with the risk of blindness and organ damage and all - end up going on disability or receiving public assistance. They should still receive disability benefits if they qualify for them. âIt taxes an already stressed system-â Yeah, you know why itâs stressed? Because rich people donât pay their taxes. We could fund these programs a dozen times over if we actually made it a priority, as a society, to take care of people. And maybe, I donât know, bought fewer tanks. People still deserve to eat and have housing. We donât let people starve in the streets because they made bad choices. (Besides, what about those kids whose parents are COVID deniers, or feeding them vetrinary drugs? Do they âdeserveâ to suffer their whole lives because their parents are assholes?) Once we open that door to âOh itâs their own fault theyâre disabled, so why should society pay for it?â it VERY QUICKLY becomes âWell, itâs your fault for being fat*. Or âYou must not have been eating right, so you deserve it.â Or âItâs your fault for not trying yogaâ. Or âThis treatment didnât work for you, so you must have been doing it wrongâ.
*This isnât an academic exercise. The city I live in has a policy that if your disability is due to alcoholism, drug abuse, or âobesityâ, you canât qualify for a reduced fare transit pass, or paratransit services. Do you know how easy it is to spin something into not qualifying for benefits? âWell theyâre fat, so the pain must be their own fault.â even if itâs a matter of âBad knees run in my family, and being in pain all the time makes it really difficult to exerciseâ. Who gives a shit why it happened? Theyâre suffering, and access to better transportation would make them suffer less. Actually, if someoneâs an alcoholic or addict, I probably want them to have MORE access to public transit? Drunk driving is bad. We donât give people more reasons to deny people help. I literally do not give even a single, solitary fuck if a million people who âbrought it on themselvesâ get help. Any focus on âBUT THE UNDESERVING-â is an attempt to con you into policing poor people and disabled people more.

Your tag "when you're trans, both masculinity and femininity become weapons against you at any given moment" really resonated with me. Its a powerful and succint way of saying it
I also often say trans people regardless of actual identity are schroedinger's gender- you are whatever gender is convenient for the person hurting you to harm you with at any given moment. If they believe calling you a woman will hurt you, they'll use that. If a man, they'll use that instead. If they can completely degender you, they will. And it will change based on the second, many times.
