Paul Ryan Gets It
From Transcript of Paul Ryan's speech at the RNC

After four years of government trying to divide up the
wealth, we will get America creating wealth again. (APPLAUSE) With tax fairness and regulatory reform, we'll put government back on the side of the men and women who create jobs, and the men and women who need jobs. My Mom started a small business, and I've seen what it takes. Mom was 50 when my Dad died. She got on a bus every weekday for years, and rode 40 miles each morning to Madison. She earned a new degree and learned new skills to start her small business. It wasn't just a new livelihood. It was a new life. And it transformed my Mom from a widow in grief to a small businesswoman whose happiness wasn't just in the past. Her work gave her hope. It made our family proud. And to this day, my Mom is my role model. (APPLAUSE) Behind every small business, there's a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores, these didn't come out of nowhere. A lot of heart goes into each one. And if small business people say they made it on their own, all they are saying is that nobody else worked seven days a week in their place. Nobody showed up in their place to open the door at five in the morning. Nobody did their thinking, and worrying, and sweating for them. After all that work, and in a bad economy, it sure doesn't help to hear from their president that government gets the credit. What they deserve to hear is the truth: Yes, you did build that. Time to Act
I think the small business owners in America had been sitting on the sidelines until Mr. Obama said those nine words: "If you've got a business--you didn't build that." It's the word "that" that has business leaders so pumped up. And no one really knows for certain, except Mr. Obama, if his use of the word "that" was referring to business owners not having built our businesses or we didn't build the roads and bridges that we rely on to conduct our business, which he spoke of earlier in his speech. Call it a gaffe. But, for me, it's a lot like walking into a dark room. At first I see nothing and after a few moments, my eyes start to adjust and I begin to see what's around me. What I see is I am either in the wrong room or the room has changed a lot...and I don't like it.
Those nine words when added to the rest of Mr. Obama's speech send a chill up my spine because they give us a peek into the direction he is taking us and what he wants America to become. And what he wants us to become is not whast I want--an America where the individual pursuit of happiness and success is second to the the government's. In Mr. Obama's America the spirit and energy that drives indivual effort is dead...gone and replaced by collective spirit and energy of the state. The trick, ladies and gentlemen, is to figure a way to keep both the collective spirit and the individual spirit alive and well, helping, nurturing each other, for the good of each other and the survival of America.
So, it's time to flip the switch, start seeing and understanding the threat before us and get to work at fixing things before it's too late.

President Obama's remarks: Roanoke Fire Station #1, Roanoke, Virginia July 13, 2012
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."
My response: Mr. President, with all due respect, I built my business. And I have done it without government help.
