“Night at the Ballet” - iPhone 13 Film (with Dance)

 “Night at the Ballet” - iPhone 13 Film (with Dance) This is a short dance film we shot for fun with our iPhone 13 as a challenge to come up with a story we could film during our visit to watch a ballet performance at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York. Phone filmmaking is accessible to everyone and that was a great opportunity to practice since cameras are not allowed in theaters. For this iPhone 13 dance video, we came up with a basic storyline but we also improvised a lot of shots on location. It was a challenge filming this short film in a public place and people wondering what we were up to. But we had fun!!! In this dance video we wanted to showcase her dancing and acting skills as a theater jazz dancer through storytelling. This way she can submit it for virtual dance auditions and get noticed through the crowd. As dance videographers, and dancers ourselves, when it comes to filming dance our goal is to help the dance and the dancer be the focus. Even though we always look for interesting camera moves, angles and transitions, at the heart of everything is to make sure that any filmmaking technique doesn’t take away or distracts from enjoying the dance. In this dance video we implemented different filmmaking techniques and challenged ourselves to tell a short story through editing under 1 minute. ❗This is especially useful when creating short form content...such as dance commercials, brand videos or commercials in general !  This short dance film for example, could be used for a new broadway show promo…or a brand looking to advertise their products or services. Visual storytelling and a clear messaging needs to be conveyed fast in these kinds of videos. We think that showing just what's necessary to tell a story in film allows you to keep up the pacing and keep the audience engaged…with the best way possible: Filming Dance!

This dance film is a dance documentary style of video of a group of tap dancers preparing their new show. This is their first show back together since the pandemic. In this dance video we wanted to capture the excitement, anticipation and hard work that goes into making this tap dance performance come to life. The team work, devotion and faith of these tap dancers to pull this show together. While we were filming the dancers and filming their choreography, our focus in this dance film was not just to show the dance. Our goal was to make the audience of the final dance film get a glimpe of everything that goes behind the scenes and feel part of the creation process from rehearsal to performance to celebration. Anne Bonny (Maria Kouppari) falls head over heels for the infamous pirate Calico Jack Rackham (Ibrahim Perez) and stole away with her lover on a route to riches. But as Jack and Anne hunt the seas, a separate danger arises, one that will threaten all pirates. Calico is a pirate story told in the laguage of ballet and dance.
