I think the Academic Rivals! trope is overused in the context where the banter isn't really serious and they just playfully dislike eachother and compete... It's not bad of course! But how much fun would it be where one of them feels inferior because they constantly lose to their rival to they point of pushing themselves and crumbling under studies, feeling like shit because they know they will never beat the other. The kind where one of them grows to hate the other with their whole heart while the other slowly catches feelings. The kind where it's tears, pressure and the need to be number one that drives the MC instead of falling for their rival? Where they genuinely feel numb everytime they come only second.. it would suck because, getting third place would mean you did all that you could, getting first place would mean you did the best that anyone could, but getting the second place always means that you could be so much better but you can't, it's overall a very gut wretching feeling which i feel like most Academic Rivals! Lack.
