'Why are people saying they WANT their characters to be called slurs in Veilguard?'
That is not what critiques about the omission of oppression and racism in Veilguard are saying.
The previous games immersed us in a deeply inequitable world where your birth, race, and ability to use magic all affect your freedoms and experience of life. They also made a point to say Tevinter has the worst of the worst of evil institutions.
But that is now erased, aside from small comments on the side. Your character cannot engage with these institutional evils. In fact, these evils aren't even so bad. It was all exaggerated. After all, they can fix themselves off-screen in a handful of years.
Fans want to fight these institutions. But Veilguard does not give us an opportunity. More so than the previous games, it is fixated on defeating The Big Bad, and erases the everyday evils of Thedas.
(I have a whole series on - the lack of - institutional change and the Dragon Age series that I'm working on. This is just something I wanted to get out, because it agitates me when people read critiques so shallowly.)
