You might remember hearing about Jan Scott-Frazier's amazing career as one of the first Americans to ever work full-time in Japan inside the anime industry. Years ago, she was on ANNCast, sharing stories of her adventures as an anime animator & director, and eventually becoming the President of the US branch of Production I-G. Now, sadly, she needs help. After being removed from the kidney donor list, she must now move into an assisted living facility, and needs help with her moving and medical expenses. If you can, consider donating a little to a true Anime Veteran! If you don't have the means to donate, please pass this along for others to see.

not even JRR Tolkien, who famously developed the concept of the Secondary World and firmly believed that no trace of the Real World should be evoked in the fictional world, was able to remove potatoes from his literature. this is a man who developed whole languages and mythologies for his literary world, who justified its existence in English as a translation* simply because he was so miffed he couldn't get away with making the story fully alien to the real world. and not even he, in extremis, was so cruel as to deny his characters the heavenly potato. could not even conceive a universe devoid of the potato. such is its impact. everyone please take a moment to say thank you to South Americans for developing and cultivating one of earth's finest vegetables. the potato IS all that. literally world-changing food. bless.

Funnily enough I prefer YOUR Tali over bioshocks in ME3 I think? She actually properly looks like an alien from a planet where they didn't adapt an immune system
thank you! (and lol I'll assume you meant Bioware-- although a steampunk-aesthetic Tali is a very cool mental image.)
some things about how my Tali looks are definitely a result of living nearly her whole life sealed inside an exosuit and dealing with regular bouts of minor illness (at one point she mentions working while having a fever like it's something quarians just deal with). Pre-exile quarians, and post-canon quarians who have had some time to get re-acclimated to their home planet's ecosystem, would look a bit different. I did a couple lil sketches to hypothesize about some differences between my Tali during the games' timeline, and a post-canon Tali who's spent a few years on Rannoch:
there's no place like home.
(the spots of pigment on her face are made more colorful, and even softly bioluminescent, by harmless symbiotic bacteria found only on Rannoch. After the quarians fled into space after the Geth War, the bacteria died out in a generation; for over two hundred years, the only quarians with colorful faces were ancestors in old vids and pictures.)

Sitting on a girl's bed watching her do a tarot reading and then whip out her laptop and then nodding her head solemenly and pulling out her laptop placing it on top of the tarot card and video calling her boyfriend with zero warning to break up with him. While I'm still in her room.

we teach girls to shrink themselves, to fit themselves more compactly in a transistor. we expect girls to double in processing efficiency every two years. we say to sufficiently advanced girls, you are indistinguishable from magic

if you told vin diesel fast and the furious you were gay he'd be like "Some people like driving stick…some people like driving automatic…what matters is you cross the finish line.." and then he'd rev up a dodge challenger and drive through a building and kill 16 people

im not racist i just have made broad generalizations and assumptions about black people and art without bothering to even look into it first - but ill still present my assumptions as correct. im not racist its just that my opinions on black art coincide with antiblack opinions - that black people are misogynistic and violent and enjoy it. im not racist its just that when this is pointed out to me instead of examining it i double down on opinions ive never bothered to check against the culture ive made assumptions about - im not racist, i just have never interacted with black art before but simultaneously i am confident that it is all misogynistic, all vile. i am not racist. i just dont like rap

What I need for White Americans (ppl in general really, but I'm talking to the U.S.) to understand about Americans of Color is that You don't know Us, but We know YOU.
We've spent generations upon generations of our entire lives learning YOUR social norms, forced to assimilate to YOUR idea of society. We live and learn entirely separate cultures, but we also learn from birth what it means to have to cater to Whiteness in America. It's why I can name so many famous movies with white casts, but most white people didn't even know where "Bye Felicia" came from. It's why I was raised to professionally Code Switch from childhood, but grown white people struggle to even grasp the basics of the grammar of AAVE. It's why people who speak different languages think they have to give up their own mother tongue just to function in this country.
It's why you all are so uncomfortable with the idea of people of color questioning and rejecting what seems "normal" to you- and to be honest, I actually think older white generations are better at admitting this than younger ones. It's because what you know as normal is usually not "normal"- it's White. Whiteness is just as loud as any other presentation of race in this country, you just don't see it that way because everyone else has been forced to maintain your comfort. The entire system is built around it, and you don't even know it.
It's why it frustrates white Americans of some marginalization- queer, disabled, neurodivergent- because you do not have access to the "norm" as it is shown to you. But that frustration- literally everyone of color (who shares those identities btw) lives under that understanding.
Idk, I didn't really have a direction. I just think it's wild how so many conversations require this... Constant Verbal Leveling of the Playing Field simply because Whiteness blinds white people to what things ACTUALLY look like out here.
