may be too early to ask with the sequel in progress but would love a director's cut for "you're so handsome when I'm all over your mouth" - I was so pleased by the way the story played out!

This would be so fun! I can share here some of my favorite parts of the first chapter of part one!

This is one of my favorite passages from the whole series. It’s economical; you understand quickly who Viktor is in this universe, the pessimistic outlook, and also the confidence he has. Throwing out a number and expecting Jayce to take it feels true to who he is as a character.

When I’m writing an AU where there are huge differences in how two characters end up meeting, I always try to boil their first meeting down to its bare essentials; when Jayce and Viktor meet in Arcane, Viktor literally jokes while Jayce is standing on a ledge and knows he can convince Jayce to break into the Academy with him. This idea of Viktor going “yeah he’ll pay whatever, tell him a crazy number” felt true to that.

This is another look at Viktor’s mindset. He’s constantly thinking about the sun in a lot of the first fic (which is foreshadowing), both because it’s something that can kill him and as a stand-in for how uninhabitable Zaun is.

The meeting! Jayce immediately putting himself below Viktor and looking up at him is so important for the rest of the fic. It’s also a good moment to see that when he’s looking at Jayce, Viktor takes note of his size and body (things he previously fantasized about), but that Jayce’s eyes are what he’s really looking at. I also chose to make Viktor and Jayce older in this fic, so their descriptions are both for season 2. Bearded Jayce is just too fun lol.

This conversation was fun to write. Just Jayce being earnest about the whole thing while Viktor is like “what does this freak want in bed” lol. Parallel conversations are a great way to get an idea of how two characters operate and what the overall relationship will be.

Ah thank you! I’ve been listening to Strangers and Inbred by Ethel Cain nonstop for like 3 weeks and you can tell!!! I’m working on part two as fast as I can, but here’s a snippet to tide you over:

Viktor shivers. There’s a small part of him that doesn’t trust the words. He’s never had someone stick around when things got tough; his mother died, Singed abandoned him, Jayce lied. If he pulls them both through a war and Sevika cuts him loose, he doesn’t know if he can still hold his head above water. He wants so desperately to belong to someone that just wants him, uncomplicated by the things he can provide, the jobs he doesn’t want.

Sevika reads him like a book. She knocks her forehead a little harder into Viktor until he reaches up and grabs the back of her head, pushing into the hold. She breaks it after a few seconds, and Viktor is dizzy with need.

Hey hi Ash! Happy to throw down some stream of consciousness about Creative Differences, because it's one of those fics that my muse absolutely avoided until I got precariously close to the deadline and published a completely separate one that sparked an idea. This was written for @hypnostheory as part of the @rwrbnygiftexchange last year? This year? I guess technically I wrote it last year and published it this year.

I didn't think I'd ever write a band AU, and I say that having grown up a big ol' music nerd who has perfect-ish pitch and played multiple instruments (all woodwinds), could at one point sightread (don't ask me to do it now because I am rusty), and joined every vocal ensemble my various schools had to offer, including a gospel choir (as a borderline atheist mayosapiens -- yes, I recognize the irony and problematicness, but this was the early 2000s and the choir comprised largely POCs who just needed some sopranos to fill in the high treble in their harmonies, so they recruited a dozen or so of us from the concert choir).

But that being said, of the three prompts that Hyp gave me for this exchange, this one resonated the most with me (music pun totally intended). I love a good rivals-to-lovers or enemies-to-lovers story, so getting the chance to write something like that was really fun.

I wrote most of the fic in the week between Christmas and New Year's, and it turned out that all I needed to get the brain juices going was the Arthur Fox feels from Be Worthy Love, and Love Will Come (more rambling about that one soon -- I've got a request in my inbox to gab about it).

Okay, this fic wow. I received the notif about this fic last new years and upon reading the tags, I immediately thought: no. I am not gonna be able to read this one bc this is just too painful for me.

It’s about david dying.

I had this fic bookmarked and listed on my notes and every time I get reminded about it, I just couldn’t bring myself to read it. But now I did. And it shattered my heart, put it into a grinder, set it on fire, and threw the ashes into the ocean. I never cried so hard about a fic this much. It explained grief and growing around it so perfectly. I guess I just needed a good cry today after a long, exhausting, and disappointing week, and this broke the dam of tears so violently.

I’ve lost so many pets in my life to the point that I couldn’t get a new one because I have the fear for their short lives and the grief of inevitably losing them that comes with it. David is like family to me, I greatly empathize with all of henry’s thoughts (and alex’s and notes too) on this one, that’s why this story is so personal to me.

And most of all, excuse me but that ‘bigger than the whole sky’ title is an overkill to my entire fucking soul. I played the song while reading and I might just got dehydrated from all the tears and snot that exited from my body.

📚 How do you come up with the fics you write?

So I’m a highly imaginative and deeply undisciplined person. It’s actually harder for me to finish fics than come up with them. I read a lot, and I think consuming is one of the most helpful parts of the fic writing process. But I’m also the person that’ll listen to a song and go “okay but what if they’re both painters!” Lamb also tells me to write things sometimes and I’m a good husband 💖

🌊 A kink you’d like to write but think you’d be judged

Literally I’m starting to think there isn’t one. Like I’ve written so much and the fics that have the less common kinks are some of my most popular (looking at you, shoe riding.) I think the only one that might get side eye is Somnophilia but there’s plenty of folks in the RWRB writing that so I think I’m good. But anything I have an interest in writing I don’t have concerns about.

I’m 5’5”! This is hard to tell because I’m in heels a lot, but I also slouch, so I’m not sure if it evens out lol. I’m half a foot taller than Lamb, which I think is hilarious personally.

🔐 Something no one would guess about you?

Hmm, a hard one. I’m a pretty open book, but I guess the surprising thing is that I have a journalism degree. A lot of people guess English, but that was one of my minors - I also minored in history and political science. So basically I went to school for Writing and More Writing lol.

I’m bouncing between two things right now (as is the hyp way) so here are two snippets.

“I need this,” Henry says, staring down at Alex’s warm, open, too kind face. He sinks into the hand on his throat. He’s had plenty of men hold him like that, some for fun, some as they scraped something out of Henry he’ll probably never get back. “I need you to do it and still love me after.”

And my other project is a secret

Alex cards his fingers through the hair at the back of Henry’s neck and he breaks. Henry grabs Alex, clinging to his shoulders. He can’t wail, his throat too sore to make the sound, but he makes an awful choking noise. Above him Alex hums, rocking on his heels. He whispers something against Henry’s hair, but Henry doesn’t have the wherewithal to interpret the words. He soaks in the comfort and lets himself be cradled by that easy love.
