Today is the 25th anniversary of the Roadkill incident.
For those not in the know, the Roadkill incident occurred during filming of Robot Wars: The Third Wars. According to witness report, a heavyweight robot armed with long sharp spikes all over it's body was being transported into the arena, when the bot suddenly came to life. This was a result of a faulty homemade turn-key switch and rampant radio interference throughout T3W. It drove around by itself, knocking assistant director Alex Rofaila out from his feet, who's lower leg/ankle was subsequently impaled onto one of the spikes. He was then dragged around the arena until some other people present managed to bring the robot to a stop.
Alex Rofaila was unable to walk for sixteen weeks onward, and Roadkill was obviously disqualified. Filming for The Third Wars was halted for two days, various side events were cancelled, the Middleweight league was trimmed down to a single melee, and various health and safety rules were swiftly put forward and enforced.
Along with this came the prompt retirement of Rex Garrod of Cassius fame. He was extremely angered with the lack of health and safety being enforced prior to the incident, and quit the show in protest. Quote:
"For one accident to occur is bad, But for two of the exact same fault to occur in my book is nothing short of criminal. I have no intention of returning to Robot Wars until I'm satisfied that safety is up to the standards I am used to in my profession (Special effects for T.V. Films & Advertising). After these almighty cockups, things have taken a giant step forward, But from information received by many of the last wars contestants, it still has a long way to go. And self important people still rule, both in safety and common courtesy." Unquote.
There is some speculation that the robot involved was a T2W competitor named The Parthian Shot, which was armed with ankle-high spikes, and can be seen in the background of multiple pit segments in T3W, despite not competing. This has been backed (and pretty much spearheaded) by Ray Tait from Centurion, who were present in T3W.
In the past, the bot responsible for the incident was widely believed to be More Panda Monium, sequel to T2W competitor Panda Monium, who had to withdraw from T3W. Images show the bot was armed with a pneumatic spike. However, this was debunked following an investigation by the Robot Wars Wiki, who found that the bot in question wasn't even present on the day of filming the incident occurred on.
After the incident, Mentorn did a very good job at covering up what had happened. Discussions on the official Robot Wars forums were deleted, most news articles were vague (as seen above), and we're still not fully sure what happened. We don't have an image of the robot, we don't even know if it was called Roadkill, that was just a name that Alex Rofaila recalled.
Witness report is unreliable minutes after something happens, and this incident was over 20 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the facts have been warped and combined with the false over the years, like a game of Telephone. My theory is that it probably was The Parthian Shot who caused it, and the above has happened over the years due to limited info and Mentorn's astounding cover-up. But to be honest, we may never know. Another one to throw onto the pile of Robot Wars mysteries.
Thanks for reading. For more info:

Disney banned an episode of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur called "The Gatekeeper," because of the current political climate in the US. So the episode is about Lunella's friend Brooklyn being targeted by the coach of a rival volleyball team, Greer, who found out she was trans and tried to stop her from playing. She even goes as far as to trap Brooklyn, Lunella and the others in the locker room, and will only let them out if they follow her "rules."
Brooklyn: "I'm trans, my very existence breaks Greer's rules, which means, as long as I'm a member of this team...we'll never escape..."
And they break out of the room specifically by breaking the rules. There's also an awesome video game-like scene where the team fights a monster-like version of Greer by throwing volleyballs at her, with streaks colored like the trans flag.
Brooklyn: "It doesn't matter how many doors people like you slam in my face. With my fight, plus my crew backing me up, I'm always gonna find my way out."
This episode is EXACTLY what trans kids need right now, but no, Disney was too spineless to air the episode. They can claim for the 69420th time that XYZ is their first gay character, they can sell rainbow Mickey Mouse pins, they can put up pride month collections on Disney+, but it's clear that they only "support" the LGBTQ+ community when it's profitable for them.

November 6 / 7, 2024 - Far-right Israeli hooligans of Maccabi Tel Aviv came to Amsterdam for a match against Ajax, and went around singing their fascist songs about killing arabs and destroying palestine, attacking random people's houses, ripping down and burning palestinian flags and attacking random people for looking like palestine supporters, feeling untouchable. After an evening of this, with Amsterdam police just letting it happen, people had had enough and mostly Moroccan dutch people organised to hunt down Maccabi hooligans throughout the city. One of the Maccabi hooligans jumped in the canal to escape a beating. Passports were confiscated showing that several of the hooligans were IDF soldiers.
The Israeli government has responded by calling this a pogrom and sending two planes to Amsterdam, presumably to bomb a hospital or school in retaliation.
