DAY FOUR: POSSUM
You show that to children?
I’m not even sure where to start with this movie. It’s grim, and dreary, and bleak as anything. Everything in it looks weathered and old, if not actively rotting. No bright colors. No joyful sounds. Possum is about trauma, and the things we carry with us from childhood. It is a movie to watch alone and in silence.
The protagonist Philip is a recently disgraced puppeteer. After an unspecified scandal that costs him his career, he returns to his decrepit childhood home. It seems he has nowhere else to go. While there, he endures the taunts of his grotesque, leering stepfather and wanders the bleak British countryside. The title of the movie is the name of a puppet Philip intends to destroy. It doesn’t look like a possum, to say the least. He keeps trying to get rid of it but somehow it keeps coming back.

Sean Harris’s performance as the wincing, terrified Philip is astonishing. His face is almost a mask, so permanent is the frown he wears. I once read that people are often afraid of mice not because they’re actually afraid of them, but because they’re afraid of having to dispose of them: that they will see the mouse mutilated and killed before their very eyes. Philip is frightening like that. It’s obvious from his first moment on screen that something horrible has already happened to him, but I spent the whole movie afraid that something else was going to happen to him. And…something does. This movie would be best seen without spoilers so I won’t say much more. The last I checked it’s available on Amazon Prime, but if it isn’t it’s worth spending money on.

Hello, great page you have here. Do you know if any Sean Harris fans have seen his short film White? It seems we are destined to never have the fortune of seeing it, which is very sad.
Hi, apologies for the late reply. Sadly not, last we heard there were post production delays, but it’s all been silent for a few years now which is a real shame. Fingers crossed it materialises down the line.

I think [my characters] are all very real people. They’re also people I’ve somehow bumped into. I always try to come up with some sort of truth.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’s Sean Harris joins American Gods
There have been some pretty spot-on pieces of casting for the new TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, with Ian McShane our favorite so far. Three new names have been added to the list, with Sean Harris, Yetide Badaki and Bruce Langley now on board.
Michael Green and Bryan Fuller are leading the team adapting Gaiman’s novel (with the writer himself involved), chronicling the struggle between the gods of old (mythological legends from around the world) and new (reflecting modern society’s love for money, technology and celebrity, among other things). The story finds Shadow (Ricky Whittle) trying to come to grips with his suddenly changing life and his connection with the Norse god Odin.
Harris, the Prometheus veteran who stole scenes in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation last year, will be Mad Sweeney, a leprechaun who is having a hard time understanding how he lost his charm and way. Always up for a good rumble, Sweeney is never deprived while in the employment of Mr. Wednesday (McShane). Badaki, who has been seen on shows such as Criminal Minds and Masters Of Sex, plays Bilquis, an ancient goddess of love who craves the worship she inspired in eras long gone, and who is eager to find that same relevance in today’s world. And newcomer Langley is on as Technical Boy, a New God who is a dangerously unpredictable purveyor of all things technological.
With the cameras set to start rolling next month, the show itself should be on our screens next year.
