My name is Hunter, I am 23 years old, I align with the female orientation, I am from Sarasota, Florida and I am Caucasian/Italian & French. I am not a member of any organized groups or currently working, but I am a full-time Mom and Student at the State College of Florida! I tend to my houseplants, garden, and home projects for fun, and go on adventures with my 22-month-old in my free time! I believe what makes me unique is that I love to have my own style instead of going with what everyone else likes. This is my virtual sketchbook for my Art Appreciation class that I am taking for the Spring 2024 semester.

The piece of art “Mother/Daughter” is made of oil on canvas by former art professor Joy Kloman in 1995. Kloman specializes in printmaking, drawing, painting, and was a very active art instructor. There are no specific size details on how big Mother/Daughter is, but from my perspective, it was roughly about 5 feet by 3 feet. The colors and shapes used for this artwork consist of mixes of black hues for the “mother’s” dress on the right and a smaller dress with mixes of white hues on the left for the “daughter’s” dress, both hung up on a hanger next to one another. I can also see hints of blue and brown in the small details, creating a more realistic feeling. I believe the subject represented in the piece of art is a mother preparing and hanging the dresses up for herself and her daughter side by side before an event or possibly dinner.
According to the description at The Ringling Art Museum on the wall beside the artwork, this art was designed as an interplay with light and dark color palettes, showing family relationships. I think the piece of art is completely balanced and has just the right amount of dark hues, to light, basically half and half of the whole painting! In this artwork, the sense of delicacy and softness is shown in the daughter’s dress while in the mother’s dress, it is more emphasized in the sense that it is bigger, longer, and darker, the perfect proportion for each. Yes, this painting has a contrast between the two sides, one being a dark dress with a light background and then a split in the middle with the daughter’s white dress and dark background.
This beautiful work of art makes me feel connected to it because I have a daughter of my own and will one day look at our dresses side by side as shown in the artwork one day. It makes me feel happy but also reminds me of the fact that I am the mother now who has a daughter looking up to me. It evokes these feelings because as a mother myself, I always think about the bigger picture of life, so I also have a sense of emotion to this too. I cannot believe my daughter will continue to grow and grow one day until she is the one wearing the darker dress, and so on.
Mother/Daughter by Joy Kloman has no additional information online, but it was made in more modern times, 1995 to be exact. The artwork says that she is a mother herself caring for her daughter, and making sure the dresses are hung up on a hanger from a clothesline on the wall, hoping to prevent wrinkles or stains. “The mother, the woman, passes on the joys as well as the tribulations of womanhood to her daughter, the girl,” says the artist, Joy Kloman.
After reading the quote from the artist about the artwork, it confirms my assumptions about the painting and what Joy Kloman is trying to say. I think the message comes somewhat clear if you have the experience of being a mother yourself, but if you are not a mother, you may not understand on a deeper level.
This work of art is important to the world/ society because it is a representation of motherhood and the life of girlhood to motherhood. This is specifically why I picked this painting and then, while leaving the art gallery, both art attendants pointed out Mother/Daughter by Joy Kloman to me when I asked if pictures were okay for a school assignment, this is how I knew that it was the exact painting I wanted to use, it was meant to be!

My art project is my daughter’s welcome sign for her “Two Groovy” 2nd birthday party. My inspiration was from Pinterest but also having Woodstock in mind. I may eventually add a white outline to the letters, guitar, bird, and flowers this week before the party starts to make it pop more! I was so excited to do this because I love to paint and it was for something all of our guests will see!

Logos:
M&M minis
Dr. Pepper
Apple
Jaguar
Snap-On
I know about these logos because they are the brand names/logos on items currently in my view while writing my discussion response. I've known about Mini M&M's since I was little so I get them as a sweet treat for my toddler and me, and Dr. Pepper is my favorite, I know it from trying it from a friend. My computer is Apple brand and I believe I found out about it in school, so that is where I am seeing that logo. The Jaguar logo is on my car keys next to my computer, that is how I know about it. The Snap-On tools logo is on my fiancee's t-shirt that I need to fold in the laundry bin as well as on a tool that was forgotten on the counter this morning.
My understanding of the value of logos is that it gives the ability to give visual symbols to consumers to help connect and recognize a brand quickly, representing reputation, identity, and characteristics. A well-designed and strong logo can immensely affect a brand's success positively if it is done right by creating trust, loyalty, and a good brand image.

"CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD"
A personal experience where color has positively affected me has been planning my daughter’s 2nd birthday party. The theme is “Two Groovy” and I needed to find colors that would look nice for her photo backdrop. I began looking for inspiration and pieced together colors until I decided on some fun and funky colors and some pinks and neutrals. This makes the more colorful things pop and everything else is still fun but also looks pleasing to the eye. If I could pick a color scheme for my life, it would be different shades and hues of pink which is my absolute favorite.

These artists are 6th-grade students whose teacher shows their work to her Instagram followers. In this photo, I see the use of great directional force.
-
Unity & Variety are the diverse elements in creating a sense of completeness, design, interest, and consistency. Balance is the act of achieving stability through visual elements, it can be asymmetrical, symmetrical, or radial. Emphasis makes things pop or stand out while subordination means giving less attention to certain elements. Directional forces use visual elements like shapes, lines, or movement to guide the eye. Repetition is visual consistency while rhythm creates a visual flow or tempo within the design. Scale is the size of elements in art and proportion keeps a visually balanced composition in the different shapes and sizes of the art.

Vincent van Gogh "Sunflowers"
This is a piece of artwork I selected from my life when I visited the Van Gogh Immersive experience with my daughter and fiancee. We recently moved, so I have yet to find it, but when I do, it will be in my kitchen or possibly the restroom. This piece of art is important and beautiful to me because it was such an amazing and educational experience that we all got to share together, and this is a reminder of that every time I see it. The media used to create this artwork is oil on canvas and I believe it serves great use because it is vibrant and happy to look at.

"Kippe" by Ai Weiwei (2006)
Tumblr media
5 Facts About Artist Ai Weiwei and his work "Kippe"(2006)
Ai Weiwei is an activist.
Ai Weiwei was imprisoned for tax evasion.
Ai Weiwei's father was a renowned poet.
Ai Weiwei stands for human rights.
In German, the word "Kippe" means "the act of mounting the parallel bars."
The way I thought about the artwork changed from the first time I looked at it because I got more insight into who Ai Weiwei is and why he made this piece. Before I saw it as a bunch of wood pieced together tightly with what looks like a few other things as well. Now, understanding he was a gymnast himself and the "few other things" were parallel iron gymnastics bars and the wood being from the Qing Dynasty Temples, the artwork has more meaning to me. After reading this information and analyzing the photo of the art more, I can now see the metal gymnastics bars and the wood piled up, almost in the way, and blocking the bars off from my point of view.
