If you find these changes alarming, dont. How to recover from these changes, or to prevent being penalized by new updates, is covered in later chapters. In the short history of Googles major updates, we can discover two powerful lessons for achieving top rankings in Google.
1. If you want to stay at the top of Google, never rely on one tactic.
2. Always ensure your search engine strategies rely on SEO best practices.
Authority, trust & relevance. Three powerful SEO strategies explained.
Google has evolved considerably from its humble origins in 1993.
Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, once reported that Google considered over 200 factors to determine which sites rank higher in the results.
Today, Google has well over 200 factors. Google assesses how many links are pointing to your site, how trustworthy these linking sites are, how many social mentions your brand has, how relevant your page is, how old your site is, how fast your site loads… and the list goes on.
Does this mean its impossible or difficult to get top rankings in Google?
Nope. In fact, you can have the advantage.
Google’s algorithm is complex, but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand how it works. In fact, it can be ridiculously simple if you remember just three principles. With these three principles you can determine why one site ranks higher than another, or discover what you have to do to push your site higher than a competitor. These three principles summarize what Google are focusing on in their algorithm now, and are the most powerful strategies SEO professionals are using to their advantage to gain rankings.

Honeywell’s H-290 model, introduced in September 1960, included a small magnetic core memory as standard which was supplemented by a magnetic drum for additional capacity. This resulted in a MTBF of more than 1,000 hours, a much more acceptable figure for process control applications. However, the price remained high at around $170,000 for a typical configuration.
The Elliott 803
The first fully solid-state computer for process control was the Elliott 803 which was introduced by the British firm Elliott-Automation in early 1960. The 803 was also the first successful crossover model, achieving significant sales in both the process control and general-purpose computing markets.
The 803 was the third in a series of machines which began with the 801 prototype in 1957. The 801 was designed by Elliott-Automation chief design engineer John P Bunt, based on a new type of logic circuit developed by Bunt that employed magnetic cores for switching in order to reduce the number of costly transistors required. The production version, the Elliott 802, was introduced in November 1958 at a price of £17,000.
The 802 featured a binary serial architecture with a 33-bit word length and a 167 KHz clock speed. The accumulator, instruction register and program counter were implemented by means of a single magnetostrictive delay line, which reduced manufacturing costs but also impacted on performance due to the serial access characteristics of this type of device. A magnetic core main memory was provided with a standard capacity of 1,024 words which could be increased to a maximum of 4,096 words. The long word length allowed two 16-bit instructions to be stored, with the remaining bit reserved for use as a B-line flag that when set instructed the machine to modify the second instruction by adding to it the updated contents of the memory location specified by the first instruction. This made it possible for any location in memory to be used as an index register.

Our brains were not made to function as storage spaces, they were made to think creatively and find solutions to issues. It’s been found that having to store things diminishes our clarity and focus and hence our productivity. In the 2008 research paper Getting Things Done: The Science Behind Stress-Free Productivity written by two researchers from Belgium who analyzed the GTD methodology, the researchers came to the profound conclusion that your mind is designed to have ideas based upon pattern recognition, but it isn’t designed to remember much of anything. This is due to the way the mind developed in prehistoric times and as a result our minds are brilliant at recognition, but terrible at recall.
This finding is further supported in Daniel Levitin’s The Organized Mind which emphasizes that when you use your memory as your organizing system, your mind will effectively become overwhelmed and incompetent as it is working at a higher intensity level due to performing work it’s not suited for. Another interesting cognitive science conclusion brought to light by Dr Roy Baumeister is that the completion of uncompleted tasks does not relieve the burden on the psyche of having to remember these uncompleted tasks. What is needed is a trusted plan that ensures forward engagement will occur which is the core of the GTD system.
