The Muslim Consumer Market

In today’s assignment I will be talking about “The Muslim Consumer Market”.  Muslim Consumer market according to Rashmee Kumar article is an ideology of marketing Muslim women by big corporations like Marcy’s selling hijab for Muslim women to wear.  Why is this important? This is important because first as Muslim, Macy’s is be praised for taking diversity serious by selling Muslim Hijabs, but this does not help solve the issues that Muslim women are facing in America.

Marcy’s has no good intentions selling hijabs rather than promoting their marketing, these Muslims women who wears hijabs are still being forced to take them off at airports during security check. Also, there is bias of race from the pictures that are being used to promote hijabs from Marcy’s, we see only white women on the pictures and not black women. The pictures on adds also portrayed an image that a beautiful and complete Muslim woman should dress and look exactly like the women in adds. If Marcy’s was really concerned about the diversity, why not starting by protesting against the ban of wearing hijabs in public?  

These big corporations taking advantage of Muslim women to promote their businesses is fascinating because in real life Muslim women are going through hell by wearing hijab in public to expressing themselves who they are due to islamophobia. Muslim women who wears hijabs are also being stereotyped in public and being viewed as terrorists. It is easy to be deceived by the marketing industries  and not knowing what really goes behind the scene.

opioid effect

The key word for unit 7 that I’m interested in is the opioid effect. Opioid abuse according to the opioid effect video in unit 7 is a group of individuals who are using the opioid  drugs , even when they are no longer required  medically for example, when patients are being precepted pain relief medicine like morphine, methadone, Buprenorphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone and heroin  and they become reliable to it whereby they want to continue using it as long as they stay high.

The reason I decided to pick this topic is because opioid abuse is a big issue in United states. According to the video of “The Opioid Effect: An Ohio Family Rebuilds After Addiction” it mentioned that over 14,000 Ohio kids have been removed from their homes and are currently in in child protective custody. In addition, nearly a third of those children were removed due to their parents abusing opioids. Some of the children who are being taken away are still very young, leading to missing the presence of their parents which can affect their ability to grow in proper way. It was mentioned in the video that, one of the addicts when she has no way to find the drug, she will steal her family’s clothes and jewels and sell them to get money for buying drug. Opioid addiction also increases crime rate because addicts with no money to buy the drug usually robe people to get the money.    Solving opioid issue is  very complicated in many levels because people who are using opioid medicine gets it from prescriptions coming from doctors.

Tourism mobility

The key word that I picked today is tourism mobility, according to the article of Vernadette vicuna Gonzalez; tourism mobility is the freedom of tourist to move places to places.

The reason I picked this term is because of the situation happening in Boracay island in Philippines, as tourist we never consider the problems, we put through indigenous people of the lands that we tour, we only care about our leisure time we spend while touring. The situation in Boracay island from Gonzalez article has made me realize how much negative effect tourism brings, Tourist are being treated very special with maximum security while indigenous people are being left endanger. Also, the land of indigenous people is being taken away by the government and used for tourism leaving indigenous people being homeless. The money that the government makes off tourism is not being shared with indigenous people who are the owner of the land. Also, when something bad happens to indigenous people around the tourist area, the government covers it so that it doesn’t bring negative image and affect tourism for example, in the article of Gonzalez an indigenous man was killed on his way home, but justice was not served. Also Another person  was killed who was a hotel guard, but the government still didn’t do anything about it.  

Overall the situation in Boracay shows that the government puts money first over the lives of people, maximum security is being provided to tourist because they pay money for tourism.

Environmental degradation

In today’s assignment I picked the word Environmental degradation from Ryan Devereaux article. According to Ryan Devereaux article, he defines the term Environmental degradation in relation to the situation going on in the building of US border in Southern Arizona. Ryan Devereaux said that, construction workers who are building the boarder are draining groundwater from Quitobaquito Springs, and this can be viewed as Environmental degradation because in the near future, the spring will become dry due to 79.56 million gallons of groundwater that is needed to finish the construction of the border.

Why is this important? The reason I picked this word because the situation going on in Southern Arizona is putting the resident living around the area endanger, if Quitobaquito Springs becomes dry, the desert will become even dryer this means the people will suffer 10 times more from the heat. Also, all wildlife around the area will die because the spring is the only place that provides fresh natural water for all wild animal around the area. Why is this something that every American and the government should pay attention? According to Ryan article, climate experts have recently recorded a data in 2018 that says the southwest of United states is already endanger of shortage of water, prolonged drought, increasing of wildfire and increasingof public health problems due to extreme heat affecting children, the elderly, and mostly Native Americans. The government building the wall in the border leading to Environmental degradation is not the only weapon affecting  the lives of immigrants crossing the border, but it is also putting even more the lives of resident around the area endanger.

Forced Labor

In this assignment have picked forced labor as my key word. Forced labor according to the article of Lewis is defined as threats of or actual physical or sexual violence; (ii) restriction of movement of the worker;  (iii)  debt bondage/bonded  labor; (iv)  withholding wages  or refusing  to pay  the worker; (v) retention of passports and identity documents; and (vi) the threat of denunciation to the authorities. A good example of forced labor will be Latino immigrants who migrate in United states illegally. When these immigrants arrive in the Sates, they find low payment jobs because of lack of legal documentation to work in high paying jobs. The low paying jobs that Latino immigrants work on, the work condition is usually very harsh and poor, on top of that if they decide to leave the job the companies threatened them  that they will be deported due to lack of legal documents so these workers are being restricted to move.  

I picked this word because due to the ongoing issue of Latino immigrants we have today in United States. American citizens are blaming illegal immigrants for taking all the jobs, yet no one mentions how these immigrants’ workers are being treated unfairly. Also, everyone forgets that all the hard labor is being done by illegal immigrants, so If you ask me as an American citizen, we should be actually thanking illegal immigrants for getting all the dirty work done. overall this key word has made me realize how lucky I’m to have the job I have because there are many out there dying for this opportunity.

Emotional Labor

In this unit I was interested in the key word emotional labor; according to the article of Miliann Kang, emotional labor can be defined as neglecting the substandard working conditions, unequal power relations and complex emotional lives of the women who provides services at retail stores. In addition, when workers are working in retail, they are expected to act certain way and the act should always be positive no matter what situation they face with customers. First requirement in retail jobs or any jobs dealing with customers service is smile, every worker has to smile to customers even if they are having a bad day. Speaking on personal experience, working as retail or customer service is not an easy job, it is 1 out of 100 percent chance that your day at work will be positive without running into rude customers. Having to deal with both home and work emotional life, is the hardest thing ever but majority of retail workers, usually earn less wages and they are not appreciated.

I decide to pick this key word because it related to my work situation right now, I work at information desk in ICU. I deal with visitor who their patients are in critical conditions so most of time when they come to visit, I’m the first person they see before going in their patient’s rooms because they have to check in first  and most of the time they let all their emotions out on me. I have run into a lot of crazy situations but due to the hospital law, I’m always forced to remain positive and keep a smile on my face.

Possessive Investment 

This term possessive investment can be defined in deferent ways according to my understanding after reading Alyosha Goldstein article

-      First I would like to define progressive investments aninherent favoritism or investment within social structures and public policy in relation to "whiteness". It asserts that this favoritism is rooted within White Supremacy and certain traits or ideals held in high regard as a result of a falsified social hierarchy in which white individuals are placed at the top Context

-      Second definition or my other of  understanding about possessive investment as American point of view is that  the term is a reflection of  policy and law that has existed since the creation of the United States, the unequally treatment of the people of color or the minorities for example in early slavery laws and court decisions to pieces of policy such as black codes or the GI Bill, black people were judged differently when they  appear in court with their cases  comparing to white cases.Also, favoritism towards the white race in both land and labor, as well as a historic subjugation and abuse of people of color in the realms of land and labor

-       The reason why I picked this word is because this the issue that we are facing today in our societies of possessive investment, a primary example will be on how it is difficult as a black man or black person to find a job. When the hiring managers sees black names on job applications, they tend to put the applications aside and focus with those of white names first. Also, the way our society stereotype blacks as ignorant and when it comes to crimes involving black people, everyone tend to assume that the  suspect is already guilty before finding the evidence

Transnational Feminisms

According to the Article “Transnational, Third World, and Global Feminisms” by Ranjoo S. Heer, Transnational feminism is being defined as looking at women oppressions across the boarders rather than just focusing on women in the west for ample; paying attention on global economic structures, patriarchal nationalism, authentic forms of tradition, local structures of domination and legal juridical oppression on multiple level. This term defines that when it comes women oppression, gender is not the only focus, women across that world are being oppressed differently. some women are being oppressed because of gender while others are being oppressed because of their race, class, ethnic, religion and nation.

           The reason why I picked the term Transnational feminism, is because I felt like a lot of people overlooks the deep meaning of transnational. Being an African I have witnessed a lot of women being oppressed on the daily basis, but they have nowhere to run to. I have also seen a lot of groups being created by very powerful women in the African societies to fight against women oppression, but their voices have not been heard.  In my prospective, women in third world countries has been living under the shadow of women in the West even though women in the third world countries deals with additional oppression of race, class, ethnic, religion and nation. Transitional feminism should be applied in every way of dealing with human right across the globe, everyone should start thinking outside the box and realize that besides the west, there are also humans  living on the other side of the world.
