Heel erg bedankt!

During the Chmielnicki pogroms of 1648-1649 a young Jewish girl of the city of Nemirov was carried off by a Cossack. Preferring a fate of her own choosing, she offered him [an amulet]. "'If you have no faith in me,' she assured him, 'test it by shooting at me. You cannot harm me.' Her credulous captor, not doubting her word, fired straight at her and she fell dead."
I think about this little girl and her story often. This hatred at the time stemmed from the accusations of sorcery against Jews, mostly in the form of drinking Christian blood for ritual use. Knowing how deeply they believed in these lies, she used them to give herself a far more forgiving end than what was awaiting her. The quote is from "Jewish Magic and Superstition" by Rabbi Joshua Trachtenberg.
