Damn in 48 hours you’ve convinced me to love the series more than I thought possible. I’ve rewatched them recently and honestly it was ahead of its time in my life. I get it now. It’s so good.

To be fair so was the book. I needed to read it a second time 3 years later to be like damn you’re saving my life as we speak huh.

Excited to rewatch WAD to see how my growing up affects how I feel about them. I just think experiencing life sometimes makes you better able to appreciate certain things.

One of the things I find so fun and compelling about Dystopia Daily is the way Dan lays on the kind of mean and miserable persona quite thick but at the same time, was willing and able to drop it at any moment. The meta-text of a performance within a performance, and the reality of being a Youtuber being played out for us over a series where he literally talks about it too. About how we perceive him, how he let's himself be perceived, the vulnerability of working only with people who you know will always be there so it feels less earned.

There's a lot in Dystopia Daily that can feel hurtful, I think. Or confusing. But I think that's a conversation so worth having because the reason it can feel uncomfortable is that we can see the more earnest Dan underneath the sarcasm all the while. And instead of letting his guard drop slowly over the series, he continuously played with his masks. Putting one on, and then another, and then cheekily taking them off entirely just for a moment. Maybe to make a point, maybe because the person across from him is someone he loves.

But it's messy and non-linear. And I think for a queer neurodivergent man, that space is fun to play with, once you feel free enough to play with the struggle
