Synopsis: After being expelled from school and getting on the nerves of Sack, a mafia boss’ son, Yo (on the right)'s father decides to send him to the countryside, hoping that village Bang Pho's young Chief, Jom (on the left), can keep him safe and in line. Yo has a hard time adjusting to his new life and is under the constant fear of being found by Sack. Jom has to deal with troublemakers in the village. In these hectic circumstances, intriguing feelings start blooming.

Notes: I only found this show with the episodes divided into several parts. Writing down the timestamps wouldn’t make much sense so for now I only indicated the parts in which the whump happens. I might go back and change it later if I find a reliable source with the complete episodes. As for the story, it’s really all over the place, but cute and whumpy. And yes, it’s a BL. Enjoy!

Synopsis: In 2008, Makoto Kusano is laid off from his job, his company going into bankrupcy, while he's still repaying his student loan. To make things worse, his father requires expensive medical treatment that his insurance does not cover. A friend introduces him to a high paying shady job, but panicks and runs away with the money when things go south. Now in debt to dangerous people, he has no other choice than going further into the scamming industry.

Notes: It's short and fun! Not super original, but it digs efficiently into the "doing bad things with good intentions" trope. And the whump is nice.

The Judgement | The Judgement Like...ได้เรื่อง (2018) - Whump List

Synopsis: Upset because of her father’s illness and wanting to take her minds off things, Lookkaew (in the center), a college student, accepts the invitation of Aud (on the left), who has been flirting with her for some time, to come to a party in his house. At the party, she drinks too much and passes out. Aud then takes advantage of her. Soon after, photos taken by Aud of that night start circulating. Lookkaew has now to endure not only the trauma of the event, but also the judgement of everyone else.

Notes: I saw someone’s post about what they wish they could see more in the whump community, and their answer was “less conventional whumpee”, starting with female whumpees. I personally struggle with female whumpees, because they're more often than not the “damsel in distress” or the “super strong unbreakable baddie” and I often find it unrealistic. But THIS drama is great. The FL is realistically weak and strong at the same time. The way this drama touches on a very difficult subject is smart and delicate, without sugarcoating anything. I highly recommend it!

Invisible インビジブル (2022) - Whump List

Synopsis: Shimura Takafumi (on the left) is a struggling detective, obsessed by the unsolved case of the murder of his partner three years before. Due to his excessive behavior, he has been demoted. One day, "Invisible", the crime coordinator in the underworld who mediates transactions for organized criminals, suddenly offers to help the police arrest criminals. Her only condition is that she wants to work with Shimura, with the promise of helping him find the murderer of his partner.

Notes: A nice investigation jdrama. A bit predictible, but the whump makes up for the scenario. Kiriko ("Invisible") is a real baddie, I love her! There is a big "Blacklist" (2013) vibe, so if you liked that show, you will enjoy this one as well.

Also known as: The Perfect Deal

Synopsis: Yi Jun-Seong (center front) and Song Jae-Hyo (on the left) are former classmates who are now both in pressing need for money. Reuniting one night for a few drinks with Pak Min-Woo (center back), also a former classmate coming from a very wealthy family who quickly passes out from alcohol, Jae-Hyo gets an idea: kidnap Min-Woo and ask his family a big ransom. Opposed to the idea at first, Jun-Seong ends up tagging along, but things quickly spiral out of control.

Notes: High class acting! This drama did not help with my liking for scared, helpless, tied up men lmao. Also I decided to start a war against the horrible American spelling of Korean surnames, so they are spelled differently than what you usually see.

Notes: This is for all my dark romance enjoyers out there. Helian Zheng is a walking red… Tent. House. Castle. This drama is gorgeous, actors and film-making included. It’s pure eye candy. Don’t take it too seriously and just enjoy the ML for the mess he is and, of course, don’t reproduce his behaviour at home, kids. Also the bisexual undertone goes crazy in this one.

Synopsis: Five years after a confrontation with poachers left him severely injured and his partner dead, the former forest policeman Wei Jiang (on the left) is only a shadow of himself. When the young ranger Qin Chuan (on the right) is reported missing, Wei Jiang is called to help find him. It turns out that Qin Chuan was abducted by the same group of poachers that killed Wei Jiang’s partner years ago. A game of cats and mouse begins.

Notes: By far my favourite kind of drama. Short, straight to the point, realistic, raw, merciless. And with a lot of whump, of course.

NOTICE: I can read/speak Chinese. I watched it on Youtube without engsub. I know you can find engsub out there, but they are terrible. The Journey Across the Night 我在香港遇见他 (2020) - Whump List

Synopsis: Li Jia (on the right), a 23-year-old man, goes to Hong Kong to study psychiatry for a pressing reason. His family has a genetic disease that caused his mother and brother to be diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 24 and he is desperate to escape the same fate. While racing against the clock, he meets Zhang Chacha, a young woman who works in a rental agency, and Shi Cheng (on the left), an anatomy student. Together they investigate cases involving mentally ill people and have to face their own demons.

Notes: You can thank Shi Cheng because most of the good whump comes from him (ep. 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 21). The bromance between Li Jia and Shi Cheng is really sweet and I, for once, loved the FL, as she’s witty and flirty and has the cutest outfits, so it was a delight to see the relationship between these three develop. The last episode ruins the entire show though, it's obvious they were trying to get a second season... Honestly, just skip it.

The short-tempered merman, that Long-jie start calling Li Ren-yu (on the left), can’t go back to the sea unless he finds a way to fulfill Long-jie’s grandfather’s last wish within 49 days, this wish being for Long-jie to finally be happy.

Synopsis: In 1958, Park Yeong-han is a young crimefighter working in the Gyeonggi Province. Earning some fame as the best "cow thieves catcher" in his area, he gets transferred to Seoul's Jongnam station. He starts fighting against new enemies, both outside the police station, as he confronts a powerful gang with political ties, and inside the police station, as he encounters corruption from higher-ups. Luckily, he can count on his team members: the short-tempered Kim Sang-soon, the strong Cho Kyung-hwan and the smart Seo Ho-jeong.

Notes: It’s surprising to see this many guns in a historical Korean drama, due to the American presence at the time, and it brings a nice change. Don't expect too much though, it's first and foremost a comedy show.

Synopsis: At Kushima High School, the only law that reigns is that of the strongest. Shiiba Gaku is a student who recently transferred there. His goal is to defeat "Shake", the school's strongest student, in order to take control of it. The only thing is that Shiiba Gaku isn't as good of a fighter as he seems to think, but it doesn't stop him from relentlessly picking up fights in order to prove his strength without ever admitting defeat. Notes: Probably one of the worst opening credits I’ve ever listened to (well, I actually found myself dancing along after a few episodes lmao, so not that bad I guess?). This drama is absolutely ridiculous, but it’s funny and hella whumpy, why would I ask for more? I just wish women were not so objectified but, well, it’s Japan.
