Will Painting House Increase It’s Value?
Right now, we’re seeing something of a boom in the Calgary housing market. More and more people are buying and selling homes, which is always good news for those looking to sell theirs.
However, when buyers have more choice, that means they can afford to be a bit more picky- which means you need to be a savvier seller. To ensure a quick sale, you’ll want to pull off every trick in the book to make your home more appealing from the moment they prospective buyer sets eyes on it. And what better way to do that than with an exterior paint job?
Ask any estate agent, and they’ll tell you that one of the most important factors in marketing a house is its so-called “curb appeal”. Buyers tend to make up their minds about a property within just a few seconds of seeing it, so it’s essential that you make a good impression. It’s tough to dislodge a negative view of a property, so the last thing you want a buyer to think is that your home is old-fashioned or past its prime. A recent coat of paint, on the other hand, can really turn things around.
Think about it: wouldn’t you rather move into a house that looks fresh and modern, instead of one that seems to need a bit of work done to it? A property that hasn’t been painted for ten years or more suggests that the inside isn’t going to be all that great either- it smacks of a need to carry out maintenance, and that the buyer will have to sink more money into getting the house up to standard once they have bought it. That could have a serious impact on the value of your home, so you want to avoid this happening at all costs.
On the other hand, if you make a strong impression with your exterior house painting, then it could actually boost the value of your home. According to one survey of estate agents, a new lick of paint can help to increase a property’s value by between 2 and 5%. Many buyers in Calgary actually do ask the agent when the house was last painted, so being able to give them the right answer will certainly work in your favor.
One important decision you’ll have to make, though, is the color you paint your house exterior. This will largely depend on the impact you want to make on buyers, as well as the dimensions of your wider property. Lighter colors make a building look larger compared to its surroundings, whereas darker ones make it seem smaller. So, if you want to really emphasize the size of your garden, a darker tone is best, but if you want the house itself to jump out at the buyer, then go for lighter shades. However, just like the interior of your home, neutral colors are generally best, to appeal to as many buyers as possible.
So, having your home exterior painted can boost the value of your home, so it ends up paying for itself. If you’re looking for the best Calgary house painters, then look no further – Painters Calgary is a perfect choice. Our services are highly affordable, but always reliable- our painters are guaranteed to do a stellar job. We use the very best paints around, but make sure our services are suited to your budget.
Give us a call today, and let us help you really wow everyone who comes to view your property!
Let’s increase the value of your property!

Stucco Painting Tips
Tips and Techniques for Painting a Stucco Home
The main objective of every painting company is to give their customers the best painting services. Satisfied customers bring more business to painting companies. However, it is quite challenging to painting companies when it comes to painting special walls, such as those of a stucco home. This means that painters need to be more careful in order to give good results. Painters need to know the gray shades that a stucco wall should have in order to look outstanding after painting. Therefore there are several painting tips and techniques that painting companies should use in order impress customers with stucco homes.
What is unique with Stucco homes?
It is worth noting that Stucco homes have special exterior or interior walls. The walls are coated with Stucco that is applied when wet and left to dry, giving the walls a beautiful, textured appearance. Stucco is normally durable and attractive making it suitable for covering exterior walls in places with unfriendly weather conditions. However, painting stucco homes is not an easy task and it requires skilled painters and the use of recommended exterior and interior paints and coatings.
Tips and Techniques When Painting Stucco Homes
1. Adequate skills and experience.
Stucco homes have special walls and painting companies need to assign painters who have adequate skills and experience in painting Stucco walls. It is worth noting that not all painters are qualified to paint stucco walls.
2. Use quality and recommended paint.
Stucco walls require special paint in order to look outstanding. Painting companies should, therefore, research for exterior and Interior Paint Color Ideas in order to ensure that they have used the best paint when painting stucco homes.
3. Apply the paint correctly.
Stucco exterior and interior walls are quite sensitive and painters need to apply paint correctly when painting them. Painters need to determine the correct paint application method to use and the number of shades to make in order to have good results.
4. Curing.
Always ensure that Stucco walls have cured for at least 30 days to avoid damaging the wall when painting. This also ensures that walls are dry enough to be painted.
5. Clean and dry.
Clean the stucco wall and let it dry completely before painting. Most of the home interior paints give good results when surfaces to be painted are free from dirt. Cleaning stucco walls prevent the formation of unwanted shades when painting.
Following the above exterior and interior painting tips and techniques makes painting stucco homes easy and more economical for painting companies. Customers get good results thereby bringing more business to painting companies.

Filling & Sanding Walls Ready For Painting or Wallpaper
Here we go into a little more detail on how to smooth the surface by applying filler and sanding walls to help you get that genuine pro-standard finish.
The main thing that separates the average amateur DIYer from the professional decorator is the attention to detail during the essential preparation stage. When it comes to painting or wallpapering a wall, every extra hour spent ensuring that the surface is as perfect as you can make it will increase your overall sense of satisfaction upon completion.
Washing The Walls
The first step is to wash away some of the grime and paste left from previous wallpaper by sponging down with a sugar soap solution. This is a good idea even if the walls haven’t been prepared before, because any wall in a living space will attract dust and grease over time, so don’t be tempted to skip this step!
Filling In The Blemishes
If money is no object it’s always worth having the walls skimmed by a master plasterer before painting or decorating your walls, but this is an expensive solution and unnecessary if your current plaster is in reasonable condition. Fortunately, there are products on the market that make filling smaller to medium holes relatively easy for the layman.
Some Walls Need A Lot of Filling!
Easy-Filler is easy to mix and use, dries quickly and sands down with the lightest of touches, making it ideal for the kind of blemishes you’re likely to find on your walls. It doesn’t shrink and sticks to most dust-free surfaces, but it has a tendency to dry out quite quickly so work fast! Oh, and wear a dust mask during the mixing stage because it’s a very fine powder.
Apply it with a plastering trowel for larger areas or a smaller decorator’s knives/wallpaper scraper for smaller holes. It’s dry to the touch within the hour on smaller areas, but large holes will need to be left overnight.
There are plenty of fillers on the market though, so do have a look in your DIY store to see what’s on offer!
Sanding Walls Down
This is a satisfying job that will transform a tired old wall if you follow our advice and this is an essential step if you’ve had to fill holes in the plaster:
It’s important to wear a quality dust mask for this job – please don’t forget this!
The grade of sandpaper you require will depend on the state of your walls, but a general starting point of 70-grade will quickly remove the worst of the debris from your walls
Use a sanding block to ensure a flat sand, and work in a circular motion as you move across the surface
After your first fill and sand, check the walls again and fill any spots you missed
Repeat the sanding process but with 120-grade paper
Go over the entire wall, as a quicksand will help create a key for paint of paste
Once you’re happy that the walls are smooth you can wash them down again
If your wall’s very big, it might be worth using a quality brushless random orbital sander to make this job easier. Make sure that it has the option to plug into a vacuum cleaner unless you want to make a lot of mess!
Follow this simple guide to filling and sanding walls and yours will soon be in perfect condition for your wallpaper or paint – but if you’re unsure or uncomfortable with the process and live in the Calgary area, you can always call Painters Calgary and ask for a quote to do it for you.

How To Remove Popcorn Ceiling
Popcorn ceilings came to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s and were a very popular ceiling treatment in homes across America. They became popular because of their inexpensive price tag and ability hide most ceiling imperfections. Rather than applying 3 coats of mud (joint compound) and sanding to perfection, builders could apply just one coat and then spray this thick covering over everything.
Once the 1980s were over, popcorn ceilings fell out of fashion along with leg warmers and, sadly, parachute pants. While I may break out my parachute pants to buck style trends occasionally, there is no love lost between most folks and their popcorn ceilings. Most of us want them gone and are willing to pay, but the truth is that you can do this yourself if you’re not afraid of getting a little messy.
Tools Needed:
2 mil. or thicker Plastic Sheeting (lots of it)
Ceiling Texture Scraper
6″ Drywall Knife
Masking or Blue Tape
Pump Sprayer
P100 or N100 Dust Mask
Safety Glasses
Canvas Drop Cloth
Ladder
An Old Hat
Step #1 Mask off EVERYTHING
Seriously, this is a messy process. Get all of the furniture out of the room. Put a layer of plastic on the floor and then put the drop cloth on top of that. Without the canvas, you’ll be sliding all over the place when any wet popcorn comes off. Tape plastic sheeting around the entire perimeter of the room at the top of the walls to keep the walls, windows and doors clean.
Step #2 Wet the Ceiling
Fill the pump sprayer with water and spray the ceiling down to wet the popcorn. This will allow for easier, more dust-free removal. You want the popcorn to be good and soaked but not so much that it affects the drywall underneath. A garden hose is not the right tool for this. You’ll have to let the ceiling sit for about 10 mins before scraping it off. Only wet as large of a section as you can work with. If you have a helper, one person can spray the ceiling as the other removes the popcorn. Find a system that works for your situation. Start with a 10 SF section and see how that works and then go up or down from there.
Step #3 Scrape it Off
Using the ceiling texture scraper, scrape the popcorn away. This unique tool allows you to attach a trash bag to it so that as you scrape the unwanted popcorn ceiling falls cleanly into the bag. It works well, not perfect, but it’s much cleaner than trying it without the bag. It takes a little bit to get used to the tool. Be careful not to gouge the drywall underneath. Use the drywall knife for the smaller nooks and crannies that you can’t get the texture scraper into.
Step #4 Sand it
Underneath the popcorn ceiling, you might find a fairly rough coat of drywall mud. It will likely need some sanding to smooth it out. Use a pole sander to smooth this out. If you had a plaster ceiling underneath the popcorn, you may find some chips and gouges that need repair.
Step #5 Skim Coat it
To get the ceiling finished and looking nice, you can either skim coat or touch up and patch any rough spots.
Step #6 Prime and Paint
Especially if there are any stains on your ceiling, use a good stain-blocking primer and then a couple coats of flat ceiling paint. Ceiling paint is extra flat in sheen to hide imperfections and covers very well at an affordable price.
Step #7 Clean Up
This is the fun part. Since you took the time to plastic off and cover everything clean up is a cinch. Just roll up all the plastic and put it in a garbage bag. Voila!
There you have it! Popcorn ceiling removed and the 1980s have been banished from your old house. You deserve a well-earned shower and the rest of the night off!
At Painters Calgary, we can help you with the popcorn ceiling removal and repair. If you’re looking to get the popcorn ceiling removed then you can give us a call @ (587) 887-8374.

Painting A Fresh Plaster
It’s incredibly satisfying to have a room plastered to a high standard, but it needs to be treated carefully in order to get the best finish for your paint – so this month we’re going to give you our top tips for painting fresh plaster like a pro.
It would seem that painting fresh plaster is a simple task, but if you rush to get the job done you’ll struggle to get the high-quality finish that a well-plastered wall deserves. Firstly, it’s absolutely crucial that the wall is dry, but how long do you need to leave it? There’s no definite time frame because every wall, type of plaster, and atmosphere is different, so if you’re not sure it’s best to wait a little longer. Generally, you want the wall to be a uniform light colour with no dark patches – even small dark spots where the wall is still a bit damp could ruin the finish.
Don’t be tempted to speed up the process with hairdryers or fans because that may lead to cracking – instead leave the windows open to allow natural drying to take place.
Once your plaster is dry you may need to lightly sand the surface – although this shouldn’t be necessary if you’re plasterer is a good one! Use a nice fine sandpaper of around 200-400 grit for a smooth finish. After a sanding, it’s time for a mist coat to seal in the plaster.
Mist Coat
Essentially, a mist coat is a watered down coat of emulsion that sinks into the plaster to create a surface for the thicker coats of emulsion to stick to. Some decorators recommend a coat of watered down PVA, but it’s much less reliable for the amateur DIYer looking for a simple, quality finish.
The ratio of water to emulsion depends on a number of factors (and which decorator you ask!), but between 50/50 and 70/30 water to paint is a good starting point. As long as the mist coat is watery and has enough paint in to seal the plaster effectively you’re good to go.
Apply the mist coat with a roller and allow to dry for at least 24 hours, but be careful to either remove or cover your floors and furniture because the mist coat paint will splash much more readily than thick emulsion.
Top Coat
Once the mist coat is dry you can apply your top coats. As with all painting jobs, it pays to cut in around the edges first with a 2-4 inch brush before applying the paint evenly with a smooth roller. Use the best quality brushes and rollers for a great finish – that’s often the difference between the DIYer and the professional!
Follow these tips and your freshly plastered walls will soon look fantastic – there’s no simpler way to transform a room! Of course, if you’re nervous about undertaking a job like this yourself and you live in the Calgary area, you can give a call Painters Calgary to give you a free quote for plaster/drywall repair and interior and exterior painting!

How to Paint Wooden Fence Professionally?
Painting your fence is one of the best ways to preserve the look and quality of your fence. People don’t realize that a new fence can deteriorate very fast without the proper protection from the elements. There are important steps to follow to insure that the painting is done right from preparation to using the right product for the job.
Maintaining your fence reflects on the overall look of your home and if not taking care of can be a real eye sore to an already beautiful house and yard.
Fence Painting Prep:
Cut the grass and trim the areas around and at the bottom of the fence.
Clean and dirt or debris from around the fence.
Power wash your fence and treat any mold or mildew with bleach and tsp solution.
Scrape off any loose paint and sand where needed.
Check for any insect infestation and deal accordingly
Remove hardware and hinges
Place a tarp, drop cloth or plywood pieces around the fence area to protect the sidewalk, grass, driveway, shrubs, etc.
Now head outside and set up for the rejuvenation of your wood fence.
Make sure the fence is dry. A newly-installed cedar fence can take 5 weeks to “cure” or dry. If you just pressure washed the fence you will need to let it dry as well. Also, check the forecast. Wet weather within 3 days should cancel your stain project. You want to have 3-5 clear days for the stain to sufficiently dry.
Clean the fence and sand it. You will want to sand the wood and then clean off the sawdust and dirt to prepare it for the stain. Yes, it is a lot of work to sand the entire fence, but you will repay your efforts in increasing the lifespan of your fence by getting a better seal on the stain.
Cover your house and plants. Use heavy plastic coverings to protect your property from any accidental overspray.
First the roller, then the brush. The small, rough roller will speed up your work, but you will still need the brush for the details and tight corners.
Additional Tips
Work on the fence in sections.
It’s easier on you (and better for the paint) if you don’t work in the direct sun or during the heat of the day. Direct sun will make the paint dry too quickly and it won’t be able to provide proper protection.
If tall shrubs are growing close to your fence, slide a piece of plywood (around half a sheet) vertically between the fence and the shrub. You should be able to wiggle in between the plywood and the fence and lean back on the plywood, pushing the shrub away from the fence so you can get in to paint or stain behind the shrub. The board spreads your weight so no branches break, and when you slide the board out, the branches will snap right back.
Check the weather forecast! Schedule your project when there is no rain in sight for at least 48 hours.
Lastly, but not least important, make sure you are in good enough shape for the job. If you have any back or shoulder problem then you may want to hire a professional to do it for you. This is particularly true if you have a big fence: You will be putting a large amount of strain on your back and shoulders.
Products to Use:
If your wood fence has never been painted before it is best to use a solid stain. The best is to use an oil based stain or a oil hybrid stain as the bond to the wood surface better than any latex or water based product. If your fence has already been painted than go with a high quality latex paint and prime any bare wood with an oil primer.
Painting fence may not be like hard nut to crack but it is definitely not a piece of cake too to paint it professionally with great finishing. So if you are looking for professional fence painters in Calgary, fell free to reach out Calgary Painters @ (587) 887-8374.

10 Interior House Painting Tips & Techniques for the Perfect Paint Job
Here are 10 tips to make your interior house painting projects go smoother and faster while giving you a professional-looking finish that you’ll be proud of. You’ll also find ingenious tips that can cut your cleanup time in half and extend the life of your paint brushes.
TIP 1: TO AVOID LAP MARKS, ROLL THE FULL HEIGHT OF THE WALL AND KEEP A WET EDGE
Roll the full height of the wall
Lap marks are those ugly stripes caused by uneven layers of paint buildup. They occur when you roll over paint that’s already partly dry. (In warm, dry conditions, latex paint can begin to stiffen in less than a minute!) The key to avoiding lap marks is to maintain a “wet edge,” so each stroke of your roller overlaps the previous stroke before the paint can begin to dry.
To maintain a wet edge, start near a corner and run the roller up and down the full height of the wall, moving over slightly with each stroke. Move backward where necessary to even out thick spots or runs. Don’t let the roller become nearly dry; reload it often so that it’s always at least half loaded. Keep the open side of the roller frame facing the area that’s already painted. That puts less pressure on the open side of the roller, so you’re less likely to leave paint ridges
TIP 2: MIX SEVERAL CANS OF PAINT IN A LARGE BUCKET FOR A CONSISTENT COLOR THROUGHOUT THE ROOM
Mix paint in a large bucket
Paint color may vary slightly from one can to the next. If you have to open a new can in the middle of a wall, the difference may be noticeable. Mixing the paints together eliminates the problem. It’s best to estimate the amount of paint you’ll need and mix it in a 5-gallon bucket (a process called “boxing”).
When coverage is difficult to estimate, add more rather than less. You can always pour the leftover back into cans. For large jobs, use the bucket and a roller screen rather than a roller tray. It’s much faster to load your roller with the screen than to use a roller pan. Simply dunk the roller into the paint bucket, then roll it along the screen until it stops dripping.
TIP 3: LET THE PAINT DRY, THEN CUT THE TAPE LOOSE FOR A PERFECT EDGE
Cut tape when paint is dry
Once the paint is dry, you can’t just pull the tape off the trim. Paint forms a film between the wall and the tape and removing the tape tears pieces of dried paint off the wall. So before pulling off the tape, cut it loose.
Wait for the paint to completely dry, at least 24 hours, then use a sharp utility knife or box cutter knife to slice through the film. Start in an inconspicuous area to make sure the paint is hard enough to slice cleanly. If you cut the paint while it’s still gummy, you’ll make a mess. As you cut the paint, pull up the tape at a 45-degree angle.
TIP 4: PAINT THE TRIM FIRST, THEN THE CEILING AND WALL
Paint the trim first
Prime and texture wall Pros usually follow a certain order when painting a room. They paint the trim first, then the ceiling, then the walls. That’s because it’s easier (and faster) to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls. And you certainly don’t want to tape them both off!
When painting the trim, you don’t have to be neat. Just concentrate on getting a smooth finish on the wood. Don’t worry if the trim paint gets onto the walls. You’ll cover it later when painting the walls. Once the trim is completely painted and dry (at least 24 hours), tape it off (using an “easy release” painter’s tape), then paint the ceiling, then the walls.
TIP 5: PRIME AND TEXTURE WALL PATCHES TO AVOID A BLOTCHY FINIS
Freshly painted walls often look blotchy
Freshly painted walls often look blotchy. The color is uniform, but the sheen isn’t consistent. This usually occurs over the holes and cracks you patched with a filler or drywall compound. The porous fillers absorb the paint, dulling the surface (a problem called “flashing”). When light hits these dull spots, they stick out like a sore thumb. The smooth patch also stands out in contrast to the slightly bumpy texture of the rest of the wall. A quick coat of primer is all it takes to eliminate flashing and texture differences.
Primer seals the patch so paint won’t sink in and look dull. To match texture, prime with a roller, feathering out the edges. Choose a nap thickness to match the surrounding wall texture (a 3/8-in. nap roller for smooth walls; 1/2-in. for textured).
TIP 6: CLEAN DIRTY SURFACES SO THE PAINT CAN FORM A STRONG BOND
Clean dirty areas before painting
If you paint over dirty, oily surfaces, the paint will easily chip or peel off. So before painting, clean grimy areas with a deglosser or heavy-duty cleaner intended for prepaint cleaning. They work well to clean painted, varnished or enameled surfaces to improve the adhesion of the new paint. They’re ideal for cleaning greasy or oily areas like kitchen and bathroom walls and removing hand marks around light switches and doorknobs.
Wipe on the cleaner in a circular motion using a lint-free cloth or abrasive pad. Start at the bottom and work up. After the surface is clean, fill in any nicks and holes, then sand them smooth before painting. The cleaners are available at paint stores and home centers. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and eye protection.
TIP 7: ROLL PAINT ALONG THE EDGES FOR CONSISTENT TEXTURE
Roll out paint near trim
Corners and areas next to trim that is painted only with a brush have a noticeably different texture than the surrounding paint. To ensure the finished texture will be consistent in these areas, brush on the paint, then immediately roll it out before the paint dries.
Use a 3-in. roller with a nap that’s the same thickness as the roller used for the rest of the wall. Roll as close as you can without bumping the opposite wall or slopping paint onto the trim. Finish brushing on the paint and rolling it out in one area before moving on to the next section.
TIP 8: USE COTTON DROP CLOTHS RATHER THAN PLASTIC
Protect floor with cotton drop cloth
Spills and spatters happen, regardless of how careful you are. It’s a lot easier to prepare for them than to wipe them out of your carpeting or off your wood floor later. All it takes is canvas drop cloths in your work area (a 4-ft. x 15-ft. cloth costs $15). The thick canvas stays in place, so you don’t need to tape it, and you can use it to cover any surface. Plastic drop cloths are slippery to walk on or set a ladder on and don’t stay in place. Even worse, paint spills on plastic stay wet, and they can end up on your shoes and get tracked through the house. Canvas is slippery on hard floors, so rosin paper ($10 for 400 sq. ft. at home centers) is better over vinyl, tile, and hardwood. Tape the sheets together and to the floor to provide a non-slip surface.
But even with canvas or rosin-paper drop cloths, large spills still need to get wiped up right away or they’ll seep through. Clean spills with paper towels or cloth rags. Likewise, if you splatter paint on any other surface, wipe it up immediately.
TIP 9: FEATHER OUT PAINT WHERE YOU CAN’T KEEP A WET EDGE
Feather paint with a dry roller in large areas
You can’t cover large areas like ceilings, extra-tall walls or stairwells in single, continuous strokes, so the best way to minimize lap marks on these areas is to feather out the paint along the edges that you can’t keep wet. The thinner, feathered coat of paint will avoid the buildup that causes the lap mark.
To paint a large section without leaving lap marks, roll the nearly dry roller in different directions along the dry edge, feathering out the paint as you go. After completing the entire length of the wall or ceiling, move to the next section and paint over the feathered edges. For the second coat, apply the paint in the opposite direction. This crisscrossing paint application sharply reduces (if not eliminates) lap marks.
TIP 10: SAND TRIM BETWEEN COATS FOR AN ULTRA-SMOOTH FINIS
Sand trim for a smooth finish
One coat of paint usually won’t hide the underlying color and sheen on a trim. And if you don’t sand the surface smooth between coats, the finish may have a grainy texture. For a smooth finish, sand the trim before applying each coat of paint.
Sand the trim with a fine-grit sanding sponge. Sponges get into crevices where sandpaper can’t go and let you apply even pressure. Then apply the first coat of paint, let it dry at least 24 hours, lightly sand it again for a completely smooth surface, and apply the second coat. After each sanding, vacuum the trim, then wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove the dust.

10 House Exterior Painting Tips
Some home remodeling projects are just too huge to take lightly, and house painting is one of them. So adopt a steadfast mentality, prepare your weapons, steel yourself as if going to war, and most of all, relax and have fun (just kidding).
Here is how to paint your own house, all the while keeping your sanity intact and delivering good work in the process.
1. Each Side of the House Is a Project Unto Itself
Do not think: We’re going to paint the entire house now.
Instead think: We’re going to paint this one side of the house now. Consider one side of the house a project and ignore the other sides for now.
2. Do the Hard, Boring Parts First
Hard and boring parts are places like under the eaves. Fun places to paint are the most visible areas.
Psychologically you will run into trouble if you paint all the fun stuff first. You begin to think that the work is basically finished. Then, when you move to those hard, boring areas, they feel like twice as much work. So, get those under-the-eaves-type places out of the way first.
3. Throw Yourself a Piece of Candy Every So Often
During boring stretches, sometimes give yourself a carrot at the end of the stick.
Say to yourself: If I finish this section, I get to do that more interesting area of the facade for a while.
4. Flat Finishes Can Make Your Work Easier
Flat or satin finish paint? This is a tough call, as both have advantages.
Satin finish exterior paint is easier to clean, due to its light sheen.
But one great thing about flat exterior paint is that you can pick up again on painting any time after you have taken a break, no overlapping seams visible.
5. On the Extension Ladder, Paint Whatever Is In Reach
If you are on a 16′ extension ladder, it can be quite time-consuming to go up and down and move it every few minutes.
For that reason, paint as far as you can comfortably and safely within reach while you are on top of the ladder, rather than following some pattern dictated by the house’s architecture.
Again, this is where flat finish paint comes in handy. When you have to return to those painted areas later, it’s easy to blend your new work in.
6. Paint Sprayer vs. Brush? Your Conclusion Might Be Wrong
With cheaper paint sprayers on the market now, homeowners automatically assume that spraying their house will be faster and better than brushing and/or rolling. Not so.
Paint spraying necessitates an incredible amount of prep work: every square inch not to be painted must be masked.
Not only that, you need to tarp five or more feet beyond the house (likely farther). In a strict accounting of time, sometimes brushing and rolling comes out ahead of spraying.
7. Pick Your Battles Well
Make the highly visible areas perfect. These are places like: around the front and back doors, the entire facade, etc.
Other places, like under the dreaded eaves, may not require the same level of tender loving care.
8. Do Not Make Paint Do the Work of Patching/Sealing
Before actually dipping a brush into paint and smearing it on your house, you first need to prepare the house by patching and sealing it.
Yes, paint can work minor miracles, such as drowning pin-size holes or filling in hairline cracks. But that is about all.
You run into problems when you try to goop in too much paint and expect it to do the work of caulk or wood filler.
9. Pick the Right Season for Painting Your House
Should you decide to start painting the outside of your home in the wrong season, you will continually be fighting the elements.
Even if you are in a “right” season for painting, you will be working on the clock and calendar to finish.
10. Use Every Possible Step, Even the Smallest
Reaching on the tips of your toes to swat a fly is one thing. But when you are on your toes to paint an entire 22′ long section of your home, the work–and potential for injury–adds up by the minute.
Later that evening you will be clutching your back in pain.
Instead, use a step whenever possible to avoid painting far over your head.

Painting Interior of a House in Winter in Calgary
When winter hits, it makes doing those outdoor home improvements challenging or impossible.
If you want to upgrade your home’s exterior in Calgary, the easiest and most cost-effective way is to give your home an interior paint job and winter is a great time to get this done. This can be done room-by-room, without too much disruption of your home life, and when you hire a professional painting company, the job will be done efficiently and right the first time.
Preparing the walls.
How your interior paint job turns out depends a lot on the condition of your walls before the first coat even goes on. If you have little dents in the walls from general wear and tear, or tiny pinholes from where pictures used to hang, it’s important that these are repaired and filled in beforehand. Learn how to prepare a room for painting.
Once the walls are prepared, holes filled, dried and sanded your walls will still need a little prep. Painters will wash down your walls to remove dirt, grime, and grease. This will ensure the paint will go onto the wall smoothly, give a more professional finish and last a lot longer.
Hiring professional painters in Calgary pays off.
When you hire reputable painters, you’ll get a full interior painting service that will guarantee the quality of your interior’s new look. You will get a lot of bang for your buck and many professional services that simply don’t come with a DIY paint job.
You’ll start out with a design consultation, helping you choose colors for each room that help set the mood, meet your personal tastes and work well with your home’s overall design. Then they will prepare your walls for the paint job and make sure all your furniture is covered and protected.
You’ll be pleased with how quickly and efficiently they will complete the work, especially when compared to how many weekends it would take you to do it yourself. Their painting services include gap caulking, trim painting and even adding finishing textural touches if that’s what you desire. When the job is done, you will have the walls and the look you wanted and nothing less.
When they are finished, they will clean up and move everything back to you. Not a speck of paint will be on the floor or anywhere else (besides the walls you had painted!) so you can start enjoying your new interior.
If you’re looking to get the interior of a house painted in winter in Calgary then you can contact Painters Calgary by calling (587) 887-8374 or you can simply email us at [email protected]

6 Things to Keep in Mind Before You Hire an Interior Painter
Need to hire an interior painter in Calgary to paint your house or property? Get tips to prep your walls, pick an interior paint color and finish, hire a pro and determine if your home has lead paint. Interior painting is one home improvement project that can quickly refresh your home’s interior for relatively little time and money. When hiring a contractor to paint the interior of your home, consider these six tips:
Check for lead paint
If your home is pretty old, hire a qualified lead expert to check it out before you begin any work. Some older homes still have lead paint in the original layers. So, the interior painting expert would be able to help you.
Preparation for paint
Whenever you are painting keep in mind that paint preparation is the foundation for the entire job — if done correctly your paint will perform to its fullest potential and the fine result will be awesome. If done incorrectly, the best paint will crack, peel, or chip easily. Make any necessary repairs before you start your painting project. You should clean the dirty walls, especially near the stove and sink. Greasy deposits and soap scum can interfere with paint’s adhesion.
Hiring a professional
If you think you would not be able to paint professionally then it’s better you hire a pro. When hiring a professional painter to make sure that the contract should include what will be done and the products used. This includes the type and amount of surface preparation, priming and type of primer, and the brand of paint. Also, include how many coats of paint will be included.
Ask about extra costs
This is the very important part. Removing heavy furniture may not be included in the painter’s estimates. If you can’t do it, ask if there will be an extra charge. Also, having to paint crown molding, baseboards or walls/ceilings taller than the average of 8 feet can also add to costs.
Pick a paint color
Keep in mind the perceived space of the room. Dark colors tend to make a room look smaller, while light colors open up space. Test drive your color by investing in a quart-sized (or smaller) can of paint in the color you’re thinking of using before you buy a bigger (and more expensive) can. Paint a small portion of your wall and watch the color in different lights throughout the day so you don’t get stuck with a color that only looks how you want it to look in broad daylight. Stick with neutral colors if you’re planning to sell your home. Keep in mind that buyers want to be able to visualize their things in your home.
Choose a finish
If you have many imperfections on your walls, consider a flat paint, but keep in mind flat paint is harder to clean. An eggshell finish has slight shine/gloss and is also good for walls, but holds up better with cleaning. A general rule is the higher the sheen, the better it will stand up to washing and cleaning.
Have more questions about hiring a professional painter? Painters Calgary would love to hear from you!

Painting A Ceiling Like a Pro
Summoning up the enthusiasm to do a little home decorating is usually pretty easy, but when it comes to painting a ceiling, most people either call in a professional decorator or just completely ignore it! If this sounds familiar, don’t worry because our guide on painting a ceiling like a pro will demystify the process and, hopefully, leave your hair paint free too!
Tools For Painting A Ceiling
As with every DIY job, it’s essential to be prepared and have the right gear. Fortunately, you can paint a ceiling without investing in expensive specialist equipment – although there are a couple of things that’ll make this task easier. Let’s take a look at what you need:
A decent roller set
A paint bucket
Easy-fill filler and filling knife
A good quality 2” brush
An extension pole (or old broom handle)
Lots of dust sheets!
Maybe a sanding pole
Sugar soap and sponges
Step ladders
When it comes to buying paint for the ceiling, it pays to spend a little more and get specialized ceiling paint because it’s designed to be almost splatter-free – something your hair will thank you for! We also recommend using good quality stain block paint if there are any water leak patches on the ceiling.
Preparation
Before you start make sure everything is covered with good quality dust sheets because it’s much harder to contain the mess from a ceiling paint job than almost anywhere else. Use Easy-fill to deal with any holes – it’s so easy to use, dries quickly and sands effortlessly.
If the ceiling is flat painted, a quick rub over with 100 grit drywall sandpaper will help to cut through years of dirt and neglect – after all, who washes their ceiling? Follow that with a wash down with sugar soap and water and you’re ready to go.
Painting
As previously mentioned, you’ll need to go over any areas of water damage with a stain-blocking primer first. A couple of coats should do it, but some stubborn stains may need more.
The devil is always in the details, so take the time to cut in – time spent here will make or break your finish so give it your best attention. Using a quality brush and a paint bucket means that you can focus on the job in hand – you only need a little bit of paint at any one time, and a paint bucket helps prevent major spillage accidents.
After cutting in you can get down to the fun part: using the roller! Investing in the best quality lambswool roller will help keep the splatters to a minimum and ensure a really good coverage in the least possible time – that’s the combination a pro looks for. Work the ceiling in small areas, around 5’ square, first rolling one way and then back across the area at 90° to the first coat. Try to keep one edge wet for the next section to avoid overlapping marks, and feather the paint out on the areas you’re not painting next.
Textured Ceilings
With a previously painted textured ceiling, it’s quite tough to get the same level of finish, but if you work slightly slower you should be able to get a good coverage. Be careful not to overwork the paint because you risk pulling the old layers from the ceiling – another job for your high-quality lambswool roller.
As with every DIY and decorating job, if you’re careful and prepare properly there’s very little that can go wrong, but Painters Calgary is always here for friendly advice or a quote if you’d prefer to let the experts take over. Painting a ceiling isn’t the most fun decorating job, but neglect it and you’ll regret it!

6 Exterior Decorating Tips To Revitalize Your Home
Spring has finally sprung, and it’s the perfect time to make a start on those DIY jobs that make a massive difference to how your home looks and feels – especially those exterior decorating projects!
We’re going to give you our top tips on sprucing up the exterior of your home so that you’re ready to welcome friends and family around for a BBQ or garden party.
Revitalize your house with these 6 exterior decorating projects
Paint Your Garden Fence:
A new color will lift the whole exterior of your property, so rub that fence down with a wire brush and apply a couple of coats of wood treatment. Make sure that you use a soft brush to remove any loose dirt before applying the first coat. Easy to apply and offering many color options, it’s ideal for the DIYer and provides 5 years of protection.
Paint Your Gate:
Is your metal gate looking sorry for itself? A rub down with some wire wool and sandpaper to remove any rust and dirt will prepare it perfectly for some metallic paint. Lay a sheet down to protect the floor, give it a good clean with sugar soap, and then apply primer. Once dry you can use a small brush to apply two coats of metal paint.
Paint Your Doorstep:
A coat or three of decent masonry paint can transform a worn doorstep and give your house a completely new look. As with all masonry painting, prep first with a good sand and clean before applying the paint.
Paint Your Window Sills And Surrounds:
Old Calgary terrace houses often have concrete window sills that look fantastic when painted. Rub them down with wire wool, fill in any holes with ready mixed stone repair and rendering, and then apply primer and paint. Use the same color and technique for the arches and surrounds.
Jet Wash Your Paths:
A year’s worth of muck and grime will make any exterior paths or driveways look terrible, but a day with a hired jet wash and some elbow grease and your paths will soon look sparkling clean!
Paint Your House:
A fresh coat of paint to your house’s exterior will make it look like a new property. It’s best to stick to fairly simple and neutral colors in our climate rather than attempting to bring a little continental sparkle with a brighter color – we simply don’t have the quality of light to pull that off successfully so white works best.
None of these jobs should be too much for the brave DIY enthusiast, but we’re always here to offer some friendly advice. Some exterior decorating projects can feel a little overwhelming for the novice though, so if you live in Calgary or surrounding areas, please feel free to contact Painters Calgary for a quote!

How To Repair Plaster and Lath Cracks?
What is Plaster or Lath?
Generally, in new houses, we see interior walls constructed of wooden studs to which large sheets of drywall are attached. Once nailed to the wood studs, a professional sheetrock installer will cover the seams with drywall tape, then a coat of plaster. Its a soft mixture of sand and cement or lime with water, which is spread on walls, ceilings, or other structures, to form a smooth hard surface when dried.
The narrow strips of wood is lath, were nailed horizontally across the vertical studs. Lath is thin, flat pieces of wood that form a foundation for supporting plaster. It is a backing material used as a base or for groundwork. These laths are placed close together (about 3/8 inch apart). Once complete, several coats of plaster were layered on top to solidify the framework. Depending on the type of plaster, strength and durability may range once the coat is applied. The following are different types of plaster and lath that are used:
Ingredients for Plaster
Gypsum: Formed and settled by heating up a dried plaster powder with water. Durable, sound and fire-proof.
Lime: Created by mixing water and sand the material provides a natural, mold resistant and breathable finish.
Cement: Cement-based plasters are strong and usually used for exterior structures, but can be lasting and endure harsh weather.
Ingredients for Lath
Rock: Similar to drywall, rock lath consists of a gypsum core of paper coverings that bond together to secure in place. It’s moisture resistant and can be simply attached, but can also easily develop long cracks.
Wood: The most common wooden-slat laths are still used in construction and come in narrow strips with spaces between each. The plaster is pushed through the spaces and fills the inside of the wall forming keys that hold the plaster in place.
Metal: Made up of steel and able to hold and withstand a greater amount of plaster than wood lath, resulting in durability.
Why your wall needs plaster?
If you see unevenness or disbalance of wall surface or ceiling (even when plastered). This looks your wall rough. I suggest you look for some professionals to get it done or just idea if you want to do it yourself.
If you see your wall sagging, this might be the sign that the plaster is detached from the wall. If it is a ceiling, it may naturally slope. For that, you want to remove the entire plaster and apply new.
No need to say what to do if the wall is cracked. Just call a professional or follow the DIY guide below.
How the Professionals of Painters Calgary do Plaster Repairs:
Tools We Use:
Utility knife
Vacuum cleaner
Premixed plaster repair compound
Plaster Trowel
Sandpaper
Sandpaper block
Ball pein hammer
10″ drywall knife
Paint
Process:
1. Prepare the Crack
Initially, cut away the loose plaster with a utility knife. You can turn knife to make opening wider and more clean-lined. Remove debris while preserving the structural integrity of surface around it. Clean away loose plaster and dust with a vacuum cleaner. You can also smooth damaged areas with a scraper. Then make that portion wet.
3. Mix New Plaster
Once the surface preparation is complete, It’s time to mix up the required amount of plaster for the repair. Follow the instructions on the packaging to ensure the proper mixture. Mix it with the consistency of cake frosting.
3. Apply the Plaster Mix to the Damaged Area
Apply the mixture with the wallboard knife or trowel and spread a 1/4″-inch layer over the hole. Cross-scratch the first coat as it begins to set to allow the second coat to adhere well. You can apply the joint compound after applying the second coat.
4. Make smooth with trowel or scraper
After you have applied plaster you can let it dry for a while, then use the plastering trowel to make it smooth and clean surface. You can also use the second thin layer of the plaster.
Note: let it dry for at least 24 hours and spray water to make it harder.
5. Sand, Prime, and Paint
Lightly sand patch and let it dry. Then again, sand it one more time. Now you prime it with a thinned coat of high-quality latex paint or primer. When the primer is dry, paint the entire wall.
For more effectiveness, you can make holes around the prepared parts and use the plaster adhesive in the hole or you can nail the hole.
This is how we do, and you too can do.
If you think it is an easy job, it’s not but not hard. If you want to get it done the right way, you can call us. We aren’t just professional painters; we are also a highly skilled plaster and drywall repair experts.
Here, at Painters Calgary we provide almost all sorts of painting and renovation services including plaster repair service. Just call (587) 887-8374.

How Often Should You Paint?
We thought we would do some research to find out what is generally recommended before giving our opinion. The answer can vary greatly from 2 to 15 years and depends on a number of factors, as you have probably already guessed.
Here, we will answer this question based on what it is you want to paint and where it is located. Our focus, for the purposes of this blog, will be on residential houses and apartments. In which case, the question should consider external or interior surfaces. We will cover both.
Firstly, we will cover the interior. We need to consider factors such as the amount of moisture in a room. Clearly, bathrooms and laundries will be exposed to more moisture and will need to be painted and maintained more frequently.
How often should you paint a bathroom?
Due to humidity that is often prevalent in a bathroom, we recommend painting every 3-5 years. Good ventilation will let some of the humidity escape and extend the time between painting as will mold-resistant paint. Painters Calgary is experts in the application of mold resistant paint.
How often should you paint a bedroom?
The main factor here is children and the number of occupants in the home. Normally internal walls need repainting every 5-10 years. However, if you have young children consider painting every 2-5 years.
How often should you paint the exterior?
It really depends on your location, the climate and the paint that you have previously used as a guide:
Paint on weatherboard or fibro can last up to 15 years
Paint on timber will last up to 10 years
Paint on render walls varies dramatically based on the painter. If applied professionally, paint can last up to 10 years. However, much less if not applied properly. This is where professionals like Painters Calgary really make a difference.
Stained and/or clear finished timber needs to be redone every 2-5 years.
Environmental considerations:
Full sunlight will reduce the longevity by half
If you live near the water, especially the ocean, consider repainting every 2-3. Ask us about the use of high-quality marine grade paints and maintenance to reduce salt build up in these circumstances.
Sprinkler systems in your area
Ultimately it comes down to choosing the right paints for the situation and preparing the surfaces thoroughly. Painters Calgary can advise you on the right paint for each surface and environmental condition and have a detailed preparation process to ensure the best result and longevity of your home.

1. Aesthetic appeal
First impressions count. An exterior paint job can create a great first impression of an old, deteriorating paint job can do the opposite! Old paint fades, peels and goes out of date. Yes, paint colors to go through trends and can date a house or apartment building. That is one of the reasons that Painters Calgary provides a color consultant to help you choose the colors that work best for you. In addition, the sun’s ultraviolet rays cause the chemical compounds in the paint to degrade (particularly if you use an oil-based paint), which means it will lose its color and luster. In particular, dark paints will appear to lose fade more quickly than lighter colors. Calgary’s harsh weather can cause a number of issues with paint including blistering and chalking (when the paint becomes powdery). A good initial paint job, regular maintenance, and upkeep can prevent these issues.
2. Value of a property

THE BEST WAY TO PAINT AN EXTERIOR FENCE
If you have a wood fence that needs a facelift, you can grab a paintbrush and spend several days on the project. Or, you can use a sprayer and finish in an afternoon. With a sprayer, you won’t have to dab into tight corners or go over the same spot several times to replenish paint soaking into the hungry wood. Sprayers shorten the job and provide maximum coverage and a streak-free finish.
WHEN TO PAINT
If you’ve recently built your wood fence, you’ll want to let it season for three to four weeks before applying paint or stain. Moisture in unseasoned wood can cause warping, and paint adhesion will also suffer. Wait for dry weather and begin painting in the early morning before the sun heats the wood. Wood that’s hot can cause the paint solvent to evaporate quickly, resulting in cracks and other defects.
PREPPING FOR SPRAYING
Professional painters call the process of scraping, cleaning and masking for paint jobs “prepping.” Whenever you use a sprayer, prepping should involve drop cloths to protect surrounding vegetation, sidewalks and landscape features. Don’t forget to put a drop cloth immediately under the section of the fence you’re painting to catch drips. If your fence has been previously painted, prepping also includes scraping off all peeling or chipping paint. A power washer gets this job done quickly and efficiently — just remember to let the fence thoroughly dry before applying paint. If the fence needs repairs, it’s better to do these before you paint so you can hide any new screws or wood filler.
SETTING UP THE SPRAYER
Unless you’re painting a small fence section, you’ll save money by buying paint in five-gallon buckets and using a sprayer. It is quick to set up the sprayer and get it primed for painting. The sprayer pump attaches to the five-gallon bucket, and you can move both at the same time as you progress along the fence line. Adjust the nozzle to give broad coverage while still affording you the ability to focus in corners and crevices. Most sprayers come with nozzles you can adjust as needed — an advantage over conventional airless sprayers.
SPRAYING TECHNIQUE
One of the cardinal rules of paint spraying is to maintain a uniform 6-8″ distance between the nozzle and the surface you’re painting. Be careful not to arc off at the end of the stroke. When painting rails, set the nozzle to spray a vertical pattern, and move the gun back-and-forth. When painting panels, you can use the same method, but it’s a good idea to go back over your work in the perpendicular direction with the nozzle rotated 90 degrees. This creates a crisscross pattern that eliminates streaks. Even if your fence needs two coats, it can take just a weekend to give it a completely new look that will impress the neighbors. You’ll love the results!

Why A Professional Painter is Better than You?
Have you ever considered hiring a house painter? You should know how helpful a professional painting crew is. Paying someone to paint your home for you is entirely worth it.
When lacking free time but desperately want to paint your home, do not hesitate in calling an expert painter who has the time, crew, and equipment to get the job done timely and neatly. Painting contractors are up to date with the most current painting techniques, know the best paints to use, have top quality paint equipment, and possess years of hands-on painting experience. You are better off to leave painting your home to a professional.
Painting your ceilings? You may have vaulted ceilings which is typical in Calgary homes. Good luck painting these ceilings on your own! First off, ceilings should not be rolled out our hand painted (usually depending on the surface). A licensed painter will have a special sprayer wand that attaches to his paint sprayer machine. This wand allows the painter to get close to the ceilings and spray on the coats of paint without using a ladder. This saves hours in time moving a ladder or going up and down the ladder.
In most cases, having a painter do the job can also save you the costs of materials. It is common that painting contractors who utilize paint supply stores such as Sherwin Williams to receive extremely big discounts on paint and supplies. Hiring a contractor will most likely save you money on the paint (allowing you to get a better quality perhaps for the same price as the generic paint) and painting supplies such as tape, rollers, brushes, and drop cloths.
So stop wasting time trying to plan out how you will be able to paint your own home, or how will you afford the supplies. A painting contractor will provide you with a service to get the job done fast and professionally. A true painting professional will walk you through all the steps he will perform, explain to you the paint he recommends, and ways to save on the project.
If you want to save time and money on painting your home, you can call our professional painting contractor in Calgary at (587) 887-8374.
