You know what the secret is? It’s so simple. We love one another. We’re nice to one another. Do you know how rare that is?

Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, Hiroshima, Japan. Itsukushima Shinto Shrine is the famous Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (also known as Miyajima) in Hiroshima, best known for its floating torii gate, Ootorii. Since 1643 in the Edo Period, Itsukushima has been regarded as one of the “Three Most Beautiful Spots” of Japan. The shrine complex is currently listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Japanese government has designated several buildings and possessions as National Treasures. The main shrine is said to have been constructed in 593, by the first Empress in the history of Japan, Empress Suiko.

I want to say somewhere: I’ve tried to be forgiving. And yet. There were times in my life, whole years, when anger got the better of me. Ugliness turned me inside out. There was a certain satisfaction in bitterness. I courted it. It was standing outside, and I invited it in.
Nicole Krauss, The History of Love (via larmoyante)
