based, fuck umineko lmao
Me personally, I don't mind at all trying to give a murderer a sympathetic reasoning behind their actions or whatever; the problem with Umineko is that it did such a fucking dogshit job of it. And it could have been so easily avoided, too- just have the author/would-be murderer not ACTUALLY plan to kill anyone. They only wrote the message bottle stories trying to figure out how to get their message across to Battler, and then the explosion plus whatever the fuck preceded it made it appear "real". That's easy, and it's actually even more "meta", creating a murder plot out of happenstance rather than just interrupting one murder plot with another. But Ryushitty just had to make little miss schizo maid the most saddest put-upon poor sack of shit to ever sad, so she has to simultaneously be driven to great evil and be completely excused from it.
Heck, that's part of the reason I think Ryukishi either changed the solution or just fucked it up, he went so ham on "oh the poor murderer!!!" to basically distract the audience from the pile of shit he had produced, and made morally agreeing with the sad sack culprit synonymous with "getting" the mystery. But it's not. Just compare Kanon's rather philosophical angsting from early ep 2 with the screeching harpy Sayo became in the end of the manga. There's a disconnect there that can't at all be explained away with "muh acting muh multiple sides of person" (a completely milquetoast concept that does not at all excuse someone avoiding "death" by eliminating their alternate identities, by the way). As is often said, a stupid writer can't write people smarter than themselves. The Sayo we see in the manga could not have produced the Kanon we see earlier in the story.
As for what that original solution could have been... It could have been as simple as what we got but without the emotional glurge. Or it could have been something completely different, just involving the same characters; I have my own idea of what that could be that I find works concerningly well, especially in the earlier episodes, but we'll leave that off for now.
tl;dr- umineko sucks lmao
here's some neat writings about Umineko in the context of Zaregoto and a contemporary movement of Japanese mysteries. it definitely explains some of what i disliked about it
