Passion Vs. Responsibility
Sports are one of the activities that Filipinos do in the Philippines especially nowadays. This is what almost all of us grew up with and to this day, continues to be passed down to the current generation. There are many types of sports, such as Individual Sports, Partner Sports, Team Sports, and Extreme Sports. One of the popular sports here in the Philippines is basketball which is made up of two teams with five players and must enter the ball into the basketball ring to score. Examples of these are volleyball, tennis, badminton, football, and many others. But many people say that sports are one of the reasons why the grades of young people go down because, allegedly, it reduces their time in studying, but is there any truth in this or not? should they stop playing and focus on their studies?
Many schools here in the Philippines have and continue to have basketball clinics and tryouts to join the Varsity team which is a school's sports team that participates in competitions against other schools' varsity teams. Here at Sacred Heart Academy of Novaliches or SHAN, there are varsity teams that come out of different schools in many sports. They had a tryout before classes started on August 9, 2023, and many students were accepted here to represent the school. It cannot be denied that the students are very good and talented because they are able to combine studies and sports and continue to get rewards for playing and the school is given achievements here. The practices or training of these student-athletes have a schedule. Sometimes in the morning, and sometimes after school. This is done so that the students can stay active and prepared and prepare for the competitions they will participate in.
Plenty of people say that it is just a waste of time and attention for learning. They say this is because they notice that the grades of other varsity players often drop due to being careless in their studies. One reason is said to be the frequent practice that usually happens before class starts and after class. This results in a lack of time for students to study, review, and focus on the lessons taught in class. Saying that they don't get high grades because they can't focus because their schedule is heavy and the things that should be done are neglected. It is also said that one of the possible reasons why they said that this is one of the reasons is excessive neglect and it is prioritized over studying. Also due to the tiredness of the student, he/she gets sick and sometimes can't go to school which is the reason for not being able to keep up with the lesson
For us, dismissing or preventing students from playing sports will not be a solution because it is their hobby. This is where we can have fun whenever they have nothing to do, stress, and want to be happy. This is where we interact and bond with our family and friends. It strengthens our resistance and keeps our body fit to avoid diseases. Here, people get skills in something because their brain works to do things related to sports such as communication skills, cooperating or teamwork, leadership, and many others. That's why others say that this is probably one of the reasons for the student's grades to drop because they thought they were just wasting their time on sports but they weren't. Why? because all we need is proper management of our time so that we can do all the things we want and tasks that need to be prioritized or prioritized such as studying. Each of us should keep in mind to prioritize education because it is the way to achieve our dreams in life. Proper self-discipline is what everyone needs to do so that no one is left behind and neglected.
Furthermore, restricting student's into dropping their sport could lead to lower grades. It might be their only motivation to keep attending their school. It is true that there are cases where it is the only course of action, especially if the student is prioritizing their whole time into sports rather than balancing both academics and their sport. It is better for the school and the student to reach a proper compromise. The student and the school should agree to a schedule that fits the student's atlhletic passion and their studies, and only remove the student from the sports team if they're deliberately prioritizing sports instead of their studies.
In conclusion, the authors believe that a students passion can be done as the same time as their studies. They don't have to clash with each other and ruin a students grades and force them to drop the activity they love. Good time management and being responsible is the key for a balance in your school and sports life.
