“ what the hell would i do that for?”
“Money?” The response came almost immediately, although judging by his reaction she realized she might have misjudged Kennedy a little. Not wanting to potentially offend the guy she had hired to watch her back, she quickly added, “that’s usually what you mercenaries work for, isn’t it?” She straightened up from her squatted position and turned to face him.

“ you must be pretty good.”
Willa let out a soft giggle and flashed him a bashful smile as she tucked a strand of her red hair behind her ear. “I’ve had good mentors,” she replied, “without their help I’m pretty sure I’d burn water.”
It was true, to some degree. She sure seemed to have some inborn penchant for cooking, but without the instruction and patience of her mother, aunts and uncles, and the other people of the community she grew up in, she would never have gotten to where she was now - and perhaps more importantly, she would have have amassed such a big collection of recipes.
“Here, try this,” she said and dipped a clean spoon into the sauce and held it out towards him.

“ what the hell was that?”
“That,” Willa began with a fond smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she looked in the direction of the noise, “was Cricket. My cat.”
Out of the corner meandered a rather large, fluffy ginger tabby with tufts on his ears and a tail so bushy it looked like a duster. He meowed and slowly weaved between Asher’s legs, rubbing his face against the fabric of his jeans while purring loudly.

“ need help?”
“Oh, um.. sure,” Willa said, surprise clear on her face, as she turned to look at James. “If you could peel and chop up the carrots, that would be really helpful,” she was quick to add before she took a step back so that she could retrieve a cutting board from the drawer she had been partially blocking. “The cubes should be about half an inch,” Willa said and extended the cutting board and a knife towards him with a soft smile.

“ i like the quiet.”
Willa offered him a soft smile as she set down one of the two coffee mugs she was holding, then lowered herself into the chair opposite from James. “Me too,” she said, letting her gaze drift over the lush plants she kept in the greenhouse. It wasn’t particularly big but she had utilized the space well, and had even managed to fit a small, round coffee table along with two chairs - the ones they were currently sitting on. “I usually have my morning coffee out here,” she added after a moment of silence, the smile on her face widening slightly.

#003 Cabin
Not too long after Willa arrived in the Commonwealth, she discovered a mostly intact cabin a bit north of Weston that she has since repaired and refurbished. It’s fairly small with only the basic amenities, containing a small kitchen and living space, a small washroom, a bedroom, and a loft that doubles as storage space and a guest room when it’s required.
Behind the cabin she has built a small greenhouse of repurposed windows from nearby houses, and here she grows vegetables and herbs to keep herself fed year around. She grows potatoes, carrots, garlic, gourds and onions as well as some smaller herbs like chives and rosemary.
Close by, but not right by the cabin, she has set up three apiaries where she keeps a colony of healthy bees that provide her with honey and honeycomb.

#002 Research
Initially, Willa’s research was little more than a pet project she started in her early teens when she did a deep dive into pre-war botany and how the plant life had changed and mutated over the past two centuries - and more importantly, how these changes affected the human body.
She has been able to cultivate healthier plants and crops through cross pollination and a strict selection process, creating natural hybrid plants that are more resistant to disease and environmental damage, and has accumulated a large selection of seeds and saplings over the years.
What started out as a small project quickly became an obsession, and Willa has since then become a highly knowledgeable botanist in her own right. She took up beekeeping as a way of furthering her own research, and has combined the honey from her bees with her medical studies and practices.
Whenever she travels to a new place, she makes a point of finding a wild hive and relocating them to one or several apiaries. Since the bees aren’t something she can easily bring with her on her travels, she ensures that there is someone in the settlement she’s staying in that can continue to take care of them when she moves on to someplace new.
As with most, if not all other Followers of the Apocalypse, Willa is more than happy to tutor other people and help them with their own crops.

#001 Origin
Willa grew up in a family of four, consisting of herself, her mother and father, and her younger sister, Emily. Throughout her childhood the family lived in a small town in New California with a heavy presence of the Followers, where both of her parents were respected members. Robert was, and still is, an exceptional botanist and entomologist, and Jane an exceedingly capable surgeon and doctor. Growing up, Willa inherited an interest for both fields, and has in later years worked on her own research on how to merge the two subjects.

“ i’m not going to say where we are.”
“ are you- are you someplace safe?”
“ part of it is because we’re careful.”
“ what makes your place so safe?”
“ it’s just… away… from them.”
“ i’m with a good group of people. would you be willing– could you take in others?”
“ we can pull our weight. we can help you.”
“ i’d have to talk to the group.”

“ you know you can join in. they don’t bite. that’s kind of the whole idea of the place.”
“ seems like you also encourage people to punch each other in the face.”
“ you didn’t like that much, huh?”
“ listen, i want to ask you something.”
“ i’m not gonna tell you how to run your town.”

“ if it’s an escape, i don’t think it’s the right one.”
“ it’s brutality for fun, and i think the world’s brutal enough already.”
“ it really bothered you, huh?”
“ but i do wanna be here.”
“ so, what did you say before i made you condemn our sadistic way of life?”
“ i want to contribute. everyone else does.”
“ i want to work the wall. i’m a good shot. i want to stay that way.”
“ can you use a bow?”
“ i can learn.”
“ well, i can get somebody to teach you.”
“ and you want to come where we are?”
“ no attacks, no one’s been bit. no one’s died. no one’s turned, no one’s gone crazy.”
“ you could be dangerous.”
“ have you killed anyone?”
“ how many people have you killed?”
“ he tried to kill me, so i killed him.”
“ i don’t want to talk about that.”
“ i figure we can start tomorrow. there’s a training area, some hay bales.”

“ i mean, it’s worth more than my car. it’s… awesome.”
“ so i totally killed him for it.”
“ that wasn’t why you killed him.”
“ we’re not supposed to go over the wall!”

“ it’s a beautiful day.”
“ get that duck.”
“ a kid growing up in a prison could use some toys.”
“ you were the kinda guy who waxed his car every weekend, right?”
“ my dog was a wonder of stupidity. lost a fight with a tree once.”
“ you did this.”
“ i find it hard to believe that you didn’t have a single thing that you were proud of before.”
“ so how long has it been? … uh, since- since you’ve had whiskey this good?”
“ well, i’m happy to forget a lot. not just the bad stuff.”
“ i want to be here… right now.”
“ you don’t have to be ashamed about liking the fight. or fighting the fight.”
“ it’s not the only thing, but nowadays, it’s part of being alive. really alive.”
“ most people don’t have it, what it takes to see the whole story.”
“ eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die”

“ i like the quiet.”

“ i was gonna keep you alive, and then… i thought there’d be time.”
“ i thought there’d be time… there’s never time.”
“ i lied when i said i was off the clock, this is a 24/7 kinda gig.”
“ should i hide under the bed?”

(Grant) “ what the hell was that all about?”
Willa hadn’t expected anyone to hear the string of curses that left her mouth, and the sound of Grant’s voice made her jump slightly.
With an exasperated huff, the young woman straightened and used the back of her hand to swipe a few stray hairs out of her face. “I said I’d help out, but it’s becoming very clear to me that I haven’t skinned an animal much larger than a chicken in several years,” she began to explain and turned enough to point back at the radstag buck lying on the table. “You’d think they would put up less of a fight when they were dead, but not this one,” she added with a self-deprecating chuckle.
