"Fred, stop it, I mean it," you cried, your hair tied back in two tight plaits. Your hand was wrapped around Fred's thin wrists as he pulled you through Diagon Alley, ignoring your cries and his mum's.
"Come on, y/n, it's not my fault you're just slow. George is keeping up just fine," Fred huffed, continuing to rush through the streets until they landed in front of Ollivander's. "I can't believe we get to go to Hogwarts. It's it, well-"
"Wicked," Fred and George said together, smirking at each other before pushing through the shop's front door.
"Fred. George. You can't just go running off," Mrs. Weasley screamed, slightly out of breath from trying to keep with the three eleven-year-olds. "Hello, Garrick, I'm afraid we'll be shopping second-hand again. We just don't have the galleons right now for two new wands."
"But, mum," Fred whined, crossing his hands over his chest as George just started at the small section of wands with worn boxes.
"I can pay for your guys' wands," you piped up, pulling out twenty-one galleons. Your mum had insisted you bring enough money to pay for the Weasley's wands as payment for housing you for the summer while she was off in Tasmania.
"Nevermind, we'll just take the used wands," Fred stated, pushing you aside to look at the second-hand wands.
"What's that supposed to mean?" you grumbled, tossing the galleons on the countertop. "You would rather have a second-hand wand then have one bought by me?"
"Good job, y/n. You got it on the first guess," Fred mocked, slowly clapping his hands.
"I hate you, Fred Weasley," you yelled, grabbing the galleons and storming out of the store.
You wrung your hands, nervous for the Order's newest mission, moving Harry Potter. It was bad enough that the wizard war was looming over your heads like a storm cloud, but now, you couldn't help but feel like something was going to go wrong.
"Okay, time to leave," you mumbled, slipping your favorite sneakers on and apparating to The Burrow.
"Y/N," you heard a familiar voice shout.
"Ginny," you shouted back, wrapping your arms around the petite girl. "Are you going on the mission tonight?"
"Are you kidding me? Mum will hardly let me out of the house," Ginny chuckled, wrapping an arm around you and leading you into the Burrow. "I can't believe Fred and George are letting you go on the mission, especially Fred."
You rolled your eyes at the redhead's wiggling eyebrows. "Sod off, Ginny. We all know that I am a strong, independent person that doesn't need to ginger twins deciding what I can and cannot do," you replied, the words almost verbatim to what you had told Fred when he told you to stay with Molly at the Burrow.
"Hey! I'm a ginger, too," Ginny exclaimed, placing a hand over her chest. "You wound me, did you know that?"
"Yeah, whatever, miss melodramatic. I'm going to put my jacket up in Fred and George's room," you announced, hurrying up the stairs and into the familiar room that smelled still smelled like smoke and candy.
You shrugged off your overcoat, tossing it on Fred's bed, and looked around the room. Everything was exactly the same as it was when you two were kids, bringing back memories of growing up with him.
"Y/N, you can't tell me you're actually thought Bulargia would win," Fred shouted from his side of the tent as you pulled your Bulgaria jersey off. "I thought you had better taste than that, but then again, you're dating Roger Davies."
"Screw you, Fred," you bit back, unsure whether or not to tell him that Roger had dumped you over the summer to try and get with Alicia Spinnet. "And, just so you know, Roger and I are, well, no longer together."
"Finally got tired of sloppy seconds, Cedric's to be precise?" Fred teased, grabbing your wrist and pulling you onto his bunk bed.
"You're a pig, Fred," you growled, leaning against the flat pillows. "Hurry up, now, I want to go out and see how the Irish are celebrating. Maybe we can even convince them to give up some firewhiskey."
"Tsk tsk, illegal underage drinking? Not perfect y/n," Fred chuckled, moving out of the way of your attempt to kick him. "Too slow- I guess that's what happens when you shag a loser like Roger Davies."
"Go to hell," you hissed, your red turning bright red. "I'll just go without you, and not that's it's your business, but I never slept with him."
You stormed out of the tent, pushing past George, who attempted to grab your wrist.
"Y/N, The Order is here," Ginny shouted, snapping you out of your thoughts.
You hurried down the wooden steps, your eyes immediately meeting with Fred's. "Hey," you breathed, running up to the redhead. "Merlin, I've hardly seen you two, and you, Fred Weasley, didn't write back after that mission. I really ought to smack you, but I'm honestly just glad you're okay."
"Wow, George, it's great to see you, too! How were you after the mission? Good? Oh, I'm so glad," George mocked in a high pitched voice.
"I'm sorry, George, the drama queen, how are you?" you asked, turning away from Fred to look at George.
"Oh, you know, disgust by your outward display of kindness to the lesser twin," George replied, but your eyes were already back on Fred.
"What happened to your cheek?" You asked, running your fingers over a faint scar. "It looks like it hurt."
"I'm fine, y/n, especially knowing that you aren't going tonight," Fred grinned. "They only need twelve 'Potters', and they want you back here, in case someone needs healing."
"But-"
"Nope, they aren't budging on the idea, and neither am I. Anyway, we're going to be off once Bill and Fleur arrive," Fred stated, brushing off your concerned look. "Oh, there they are now. I guess I better get outside with the rest of The Order, and before mum fusses over me."
You bit the bottom of your lip, the taste of blood filling your mouth. "Be safe, Freddie. I swear that I'll kill you if you don't come back to me."
"I'll be safe," Fred whispered, brushing a piece of your hair back. "I swear that I'll come back to you."
You watched Fred walk out of the door, a crushing feeling washing over you. "Please have them all return safely," you said to no one in particular, hoping that some force of nature or faith heard you. You walked into the kitchen, where Arthur was talking to Molly, and George was promising to return to Ginny. You sat down in your chair, letting memories sweep you away from the world of worries.
"How was I supposed to know that you needed a personalized goodbye," Fred argued, using his wand to paint another layer of coat on the store's walls.
"Because we're best friends, Fred. You didn't even say goodbye. You left- you just left me alone," You shouted back, flicking your wand to paint your side of the room. "You just flew away on your stupid broom and left me alone. I would've come in a heartbeat."
"I know that- do you not think I don't know anything about you? You are the most brilliant person I know, and I couldn't just take you away. You had to take your N.E.W.Ts. I didn't want you to give up your education for a shop that wasn't your dream," Fred snapped. "I wanted to ask you, and so did George. But, I told him we couldn't sweep you away just because we didn't want to miss you."
You paused, his words sinking in. "I-I didn't- I'm sorry," you relented, setting down your wand and wrapping the redhead into a hug. Then, as if it were magic, Fred returned the hug and elicited butterflies in your stomach.
You didn't need to question the feeling- you knew you were in love.
"Y/N, it's George," a voice screamed, causing you to jump off your kitchen chair and run into the living room where George was lying limply on the couch.
"Shh, George. It'll be okay," you mumbled over and over again, pulling out your wand and murmuring incantations over his body. "Shhh, George, don't cry. I'll stop the pain, I promise."
You worked on his ear and mumbled all of the spells you knew that would act as a nerve block. Finally, what felt like eternities later, George was sleeping peacefully.
"Thank you," Fred spoke up, sitting next to you. "I don't know what would've happened without you here."
"I couldn't save the skin around his ear- it was ridden with dark magic. I had to cut it off, and now, he won't be able to properly hear out of that ear. Oh, God, Fred, why is this happening to us? We're kids," you sniffled, feeling Fred wrap his arms around you and pull you into his chest. "Time is just fading away, and we don't even know anything about the future."
"You were brilliant," Fred mumbled into your ear, hugging you tighter as if you were going to disappear if he didn't. "Y/N, and I need to tell you something-"
"I love you," you blurted, pulling away from his chest. "I should've said it sooner, but now, I need you to know that I love you. You don't need to say it back, but I need you to know."
"I love you, too," Fred breathed, not entirely sure if he heard what he wanted to or if you actually said you loved him. "God, y/n, I've loved you since you offered to buy my wand in Ollivanders- Since you nearly fell over the balcony because you were so swept away with the Quidditch World Cup. I've been in love with you since the moment I met you."
"Freddie, we met when we were like four years old," You laughed, tears starting to run down your face.
"I know- why do you think that I shoved your face into a mud pie," Fred chuckled, wiping your tears off with his palm. "I didn't know how else to say I loved you."
"I love you, Fred Weasley. I don't know what the hell will happen to us, but I'm just glad we'll do it together," you admitted, pulling Fred in for a kiss.
"Ah, my plan worked," a voice weakly said, causing the two of you to break apart and look at George. "Get my ear blown off? Check. Lose a bunch of blood? Check. Cause my best friend and my twin have an existential crisis? Check. Have them finally admit they're in love? Check."
You could help but laugh, filling the room with a sound that almost seemed unfamiliar. "Thanks, George, we couldn't have admitted it without you," you joked, playing along with the redhead.
"I know- although, I wish it hadn't taken years of sexual tension between you two and my ear to come off," George grinned, laying his head back down.
"Eh, I kind of enjoyed the sexual tension," Fred joked, "it really built-up this moment."
"Shut up, and kiss me," you smiled, grabbing the front of his shirt and bringing his lips against yours.

JAMES POTTER X READER
“All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt.” ― Susan Sontag
notes: happy belated valentine's day!
Tumblr media
"Did you know that going to school year-round makes your brain rot and causes your soul to catch necrotizing fasciitis?" James asked, his hands in his pockets as he walked alongside y/n. "I read it in the muggle magazine your mum left out on the kitchen counter."
Y/N rolled their eyes. They were the co-creator of Remus's theory that James was just charming enough to get away with being annoying eighty percent of the time and still be liked. Unfortunately, their hypothesis was actively being proven.
"Such a big word for such a small brain," Y/N mused aloud, nudging James to hurry up. "Ignoring your inability to read medical journals, I would like to argue that photography assignments shouldn't count as schoolwork."
"Do you get graded?"
"Er, well, yes, I s'ppose I do."
"Well, then it counts." James smiled proudly, his hands settling on his waist and a triumphant grim mocking y/n.
"Deflate your ego, pretty boy; you'll sink the boat," Y/N deadpanned, stepping into the small rowboat.
"So you think I'm pretty?" James asked, his eyes bright with amusement and glaringly radiant with the water reflecting off them. "You should know I prefer handsome, awe-inspiring, beautiful, or even godlike. For next time, of course."
"I can swim, James. I will flip this boat and leave you drowning," Y/N threatened, jokingly rocking the small vessel back and forth. As much as James was irritating, Y/N would never. They couldn't help but form a fondness for Hogwart's golden boy.
The two had an odd dynamic — both of them knew it. Although James was Gryffindor's golden boy, he wasn't enchanted by school in the way y/n was. Y/N had a past of getting into trouble in muggle primary school, and they weren't enchanted with mischief in the way James was. And yet, they were both quite enchanted with each other.
"This far enough out?" James hummed after a bout of silence, his eyes darting around and looking for something stimulating.
"Yes, I suppose." Y/N pulled out their camera, messing with the shutter speed ring and aperture as James began to narrate the Appleby Arrows' quidditch game.
"-And then, Fawkes dove for the quidditch — like a dunce, might I add — and ran into his teammate. HIS TEAMMATE WHO HAD THE QUAFFLE. No respect for chasers at any level of quidditch, I swear. If I were Fawkes, I would-"
Y/N cracked a smile, watching him talk animatedly through the viewfinder. The assignment was on the beauty of water and knowing how to accurately capture the fluid movement of waves, ripples, and reflection. However, James had a point. Sometimes there was such a thing as too much schoolwork. So, instead of focusing in on the way water flowed around the boat's wood, they focused in on James Potter.
He was easy to capture, despite the way he bled light the way the sun exuded heat. His eyes were concentrated towards the shoreline, his hair was curly from the heat and humidity, and his skin was darkened by the sun. He was nervous about being out on the lake. It was evident through the viewfinder and his shaking leg. Y/N dropped the camera after a few shots, placing their hand on his leg.
"Do you want to go back? I know deep waters make you nervous." Y/N was soft and gentle, and James felt the warmth of their words soothe his nerves.
"No, it's okay. Just, uh, show me how to take a photo with the camera." James reached over, his hand brushing over y/n's as he swept their Zorki away.
"Well, I messed with the settings enough that it should be fine," Y/N started, nervously patting their hair down. "Look through the tiny window-like thing in the top. That's called the viewfinder. Then use the lever there to release the shutter. Just be careful before the film release is right next to it. James, maybe I should- oh!"
James grinned at the view. He was certain the photo was horrible; his hands were shaking from nerves, he couldn't find the viewfinder, and he only knew it worked when y/n congratulated him on his first photograph. He, of course, didn't know the process to get to the photo, but he was sure it wouldn't produce much. Nonetheless, he knew that a moment of some kind had been captured, and that was enough for him.
"Do you think that it will go up in museums?" James joked, pulling the camera up to his face to take another.
"Oh, yes, and you'll have to credit me. I plan on a 50/50 payout," Y/N laughed, playing along with the boy.
"You'll have to talk to my manager, Sirius Black. You may have heard of him. He is kind of a big world in the art world— Did you know he once peed on a public statue?"
"Unfortunately, I was there for his performative art piece," Y/N deadpanned, shaking their head at James fondly. "Come on, let's head back."
James was right. The photo was god-awful when it got developed; it was at an intense angle, y/n was blurry, and there was a watermark on the lens. The photograph was also loved and well-traveled. It traveled from the darkroom to Hogwarts to James and Y/N's first apartment.

the great war
DRACO MALFOY X READER
"My hand was the one you reached for All throughout the Great War" - Taylor Swift
notes: this was an anon request for a third-person draco malfoy fic so enjoy!!
Tumblr media
"HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED RETURNS." The headline forced witches and wizards everywhere to prepare for the inescapable; they had to make a choice. Muggleborns huddled in the corners of the wizarding world, hands shaking and voices hushed. They had to choose between the fight for their lives or the flight that'll cost them everything. Half-bloods everywhere sat in the kitchen as lights everywhere dimmed and debated their options; fight alongside a child, fight alongside evil, or turn the other cheek. Many closed their eyes in shame at the thought of choosing the latter. Could they turn their cheeks and wipe away the blood— the remorse of playing an 'innocent onlooker?'
Then, some read the headline without internal conflict brewing in their hearts. Harry Potter knew his place; his fate was sealed by a prophecy, and he would carry the weight on his shoulders until the end. Ron Weasley was raised to know this was wrong; his loyalty to Harry, Hermione, and the cause would push him to see it through. Hermione Granger knew what would come of the world if she ran; her identity and belonging to both worlds would give her the courage to finish it.
Then there was Draco Malfoy.
Draco Malfoy knew his place. His fate was sealed by a mark on his parents' arms. He was raised to know that you believe what's wrong if you want to survive. He only had one identity. He was a Malfoy.
Death Eaters, his followers, had been conditioned and told to believe in Voldemort's return. Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott, Y/N Y/L/N, and many others saw the headline and knew what it meant. This was the start of the war they were told to be prepared for. This was the cause that they would lay down their lives for. There was no choice; this was what they were raised for.
"Sometimes, when I lay in your arms, I imagine that we're entirely different people — that we won't have to turn into people we hate whenever he calls." It was a bold statement to say aloud, especially within Hogwart's walls, but y/n could feel that this was the last night. Y/N could feel the burn of their mark intensifying, the tension becoming palpable, and the guilt creeping into their soul.
Draco was quiet, his arms tightening around y/n as their breathing quickened as more time sat between their thoughts and Draco's response.
"I get it," Draco breathed out, breaking the silence and allowing himself to say what he'd been thinking for years. "I used to pretend I was someone else occasionally when I was a child. It's been more frequent since I got the mark. I'll lay awake while you sleep beside me and wonder how I'll beg for forgiveness from our future grandchildren."
"Before they villainize us in textbooks, will they ask why we did it? Will they ask themselves why children were even used in the first place?"
"No, but I ask myself that a lot."
"Do you feel this is the last night we'll have, too?"
"Yes."
"I-I sometimes think that I can't go through with it." Y/N's voice shook as the words tumbled out, ugly and exposing the worst thought imaginable. To their family and to Voldemort, this was a thought of treason. To Draco, this was a thought of unbelievable bravery and stupidity.
Draco pulled away from y/n, his face cold and unreadable. "Stop it. You can't say things like that — not here and not to me."
"Why am I ready to die for a cause that I doubt? Why are you willing? I look at Potter and his little band of misfits whose chances are slim to none, and I wonder how their faith in the cause carries them through. They are laying their lives down for something they believe in, and we're-"
"We're keeping ourselves and our families alive, y/n. My mum and dad are one more mistake away from losing their lives, and I refuse to be that mistake."
"I know our circumstances are different, but I can't help but wonder if my parents wished they had made another choice. I look my dad in the eye and see fear. I don't see loyalty to the cause, and honestly, I don't see loyalty to-"
"I call my you, my followers, and every dark creature that has pledged their loyalty to me. I call you to begin the attack against Hogwarts."
The pain of their marks blinded them; for a moment, the two moved as one. They moved away from each other and towards their wands — in complete unison and with total devotion. The moment lasted less than a minute. Draco was propelled by his family, but y/n was hindered by hesitation.
"I have to go, but we will see each other again. This is the last night before everything changes but not our last night together." Draco grabbed his mother's wand and looked back at y/n momentarily. "I love you."
"I love you, but I'm sorry. I can't do this — Draco, I'm going to fight, but not alongside you." The words hung in the air; Draco and y/n were frozen in time as they shared a bittersweet look.
"I love you," Draco repeated, his eyes glassy. Y/N would have thought it was a parting gift or goodbye, except for the genuine smile. "We will see each other again, and I will tell our grandchildren about how brave you were in this moment."
With that, a sign of hope, Draco apparated. He wasn't sure if he could choose to be as defiant and brave, but for the first time in a long time, he felt rebellion fluttering in his heart.

oh, to be in love
LOVE INTEREST X READER
“If I had a flower for every time I thought of you...I could walk through my garden forever.” ― Alfred Tennyson
notes: the way that I teared up reading love quotes to pick for this lol. anyway shoutout to anyone who can make you feel this way bc they deserve it
Tumblr media
"I love you." The words rang in your ears and settled in the warmest, softest part of your body and soul. It was the feeling of riding rollercoasters and having your body anticipate the first drop but still be shocked by the thrill of it happening. It's only three words. The phrase had been spoken to you — around you— for 20 years, but hearing it with your body pressed against theirs meant something more. You'd read a million romances and watched thousands of hopeless pairings find their way to each other. You'd closed your eyes a hundred times and imagined a future with the 'perfect' someone. All of it was sweet and romantic, but this was better.
You'd fallen for others in the past, taken part in one-sided sob stories more times than you'd like to admit, and ached for love. You've run to catch falling stars and been willing to touch the sun's core for people other than them. That was infatuation, but this was love.
The feeling of being in love with them is unexplainable in words. It's closing your eyes when songs that remind you of them comes on, and then, you play a film of memories of them. It's watching a movie a hundred times before but getting excited for the big reveal because they've never gotten to experience it. It's the shivers you get when you step out of a warm house on a cold, dewy morning. Being in love with them is living the same way you have for 20 years, but now you cry at love songs because you relate to them. An anthology of experiences was the closest you could get; even then, something wasn't there.
Up close and in the warmth of home, the two of you are mundane and far from sappy rom-com couples and their grand gestures. It's being too lazy to make yourself food, so they make it for you. Your relationship is knowing they need time to themselves and giving them space, even though it makes you pout a little. It's 'have fun at work, honey' kisses, saving the last spoonful of ice cream, stealing glances at them when driving, and nagging them playfully. The best part is when you are against them, and when you look up to stare at them lovingly, they're already staring down at you.
Being in love with them was being in love with your best friend.

LOVE INTEREST X READER
“If you ever looked at me once with what I know is in you, I would be your slave.” - Emily Brontë
warnings: none
Tumblr media
"'Mione?" Your voice echoed off the stone classroom walls, harmonizing with the soft crying that rang in stark contrast against the celebratory noise from the Gryffindor tower. "Can I come in?"
"Why ask? I know that you'll come in, wrap into your arms, and reassure me that this heartbreak —this pain— will pass." You slid into the room, your eyes adjusting to the darkness and your heart aching for the brunette sitting on the dusty desk and sobbing. "I'm a fool, you know."
"Aren't we all?" You questioned, sliding onto the desk beside Hermione and placing your arm around her shoulder.
"Not like me," Hermione sniffled, sliding closer to your side and immediately warming you. "How did you know that you were in love?"
"'Mione, don't you think that we should talk about-"
"Please, y/n, I don't want to talk about something I don't understand entirely. I just-I just want to know how to know when you're in love, especially how to know when you're in love with a friend."
"I might not be the person for that," You chuckled, smiling at how fate brought them to you. "It's strange— I can replay all these moments before we fell for each other, but I don't pinpoint when I started to fall for them. We weren't friends for terribly long before, but it seemed like we always gravitated and found each other."
"There was this one time that I remember as clear as day, though. We were sitting in my room studying for the O.W.Ls, and they started telling me facts about Nifflers. It was completely out of the blue, and I don't think I processed anything they said. It made my day regardless; it still makes me smile seeing them passionate over things everyone else overlooks."
"We also didn't have some momentous event that marked the transition from friends to dating. I held their hand the entire time on an outing to Hogsmeade. I could feel their heart racing when I hugged them goodbye, and I just knew they were feeling the nervousness and excitement I was feeling. We talked, and then we were dating. Honestly, I think I'm the worst to explain how to tell when you're falling for someone."
"What does being in love feel like, though?" Hermione had leaned away from you and was wide-eyed as you talked. She held onto your words like a toddler listening to an epic bedtime story about adventure and tragedy.
"Nice?" You laughed at your own words. "I don't know, 'Mione. I guess it feels like someone cares about you in a way that no one else has. They're my first love, so maybe I'm biased, but it feels exactly like the books and movies. I find myself glancing them to make sure they are having fun. My heart still skips beats when they hold my hand in public. My body warms when they touch me. Mostly though, I feel happy. Even with all the horrible things happening in the world, I just feel lucky to have time with them. I don't know if we'll end up together forever or if we'll live out all the fantasies I've made up for us."
"I do know that I love them so truly and deeply that if they were to say they wanted to break up tomorrow, I would be grateful I had two brilliant years with them. It's not much, perhaps, but it's enough."

FRED WEASLEY X READER
"I am more interested in experiencing life than in analyzing it" - will bradley
warnings: none
notes: lol not me writing about how you don't have to follow a set path and I'm willingly and gladly pre-med
Tumblr media
"Stop it, Fred Weasley." A laugh escaped your lips and ruined your annoyed facade as the redhead continued to poke your sides. "Quit it! Some of us are attempting to study for our N.E.W.Ts."
Fred flopped back in his chair, a cheeky look smudged his face, and his eyes rolled to the back of his head. "You and every other nerd in this castle. My mum hasn't let up on Georgie and me about studying for these boring tests. What is knowing mooncalf M.O.M classification going to do for my future?"
"XX," you beamed, putting down your quills and scrolls. "Don't take these tests too seriously; they are meant to see how you handle intense, lengthy material. Just like the O.W.Ls but with boomslang. Get it? Because it's a slow-acting poison, and the exams are slowly killing my brain cells."
"No, I didn't because you don't need boomslang to make the potions I care about. I want to make people forget about bad times- not induce blistering in their throats until they chock on their blister pus."
"Boomslang doesn't do that," you teased, sitting next to Fred and placing your arms around his shoulders. "Nonetheless, I see your point and agree that these exams will do nothing for your future."
Fred shrugged his shoulders, your arms dropping softly. "Do you, though? You, my mum, my family, and all the professors push school onto me. I'm not brilliant like Percy- Merlin, save his soul from the ministry- nor do I have some niche brilliance like Bill and Charlie. I'm a joke. My future is making sure people laugh at my antics and not me."
You watched Fred and the way his lips pressed together as his eyebrows knit together. He was always soft laughing lines; you forgot how much he'd grown up since the two of you met. You forgot how much of his softness had been sharpened by external pressure and expectations.
"Do you know what I see when I look at you, Fred Weasley?"
"Someone who is going to fail all of their N.E.W.Ts?" Fred questioned back, avoiding looking at you.
"Yes," you laughed, nudging the boy lightly with your shoulder. "I also see the boy who runs to crying, homesick first-years and shows them Whiz-Bangs. Or, the boy who acts "scary" to anyone who likes his sister but would walk through fire to make her laugh when she's heartbroken. Even better, I catch a glimpse of the thirteen-year-old boy who grabbed my hand and ran me down the hall so I wouldn't get blamed for a prank on Filch."
"Actually, it was George. I just never had the heart to tell you that you got us mixed up," Fred laughed, his cheeks warmed with embarrassment.
"Nope. You don't need to put yourself down and throw a pity party, Mr. Weasley." You threw your arm back over his shoulders, bringing him in for a side-hug. "If you could see yourself through my point of view, your ego would explode."
"Please, I always have room for flattery."
"I'm sure you do."
"In all seriousness, thank you," Fred whispered, leaning his head on you. "I-I don't know what came over me? I have all this confidence in George and I's plan. We aren't the type of brilliant our mum wants us to be, but we have this dream and all these ideas. I just-my family means everything and my mum has the best intentions. If everyone pushes something at you- maybe it is for the best?"
"Or, maybe some people aren't supposed to follow the pathway? Don't get me wrong, I will be a ministry drone for years until I get a position in the International Confederation of Wizards. However, I want that for myself. Either way, it's not wrong only if you want it for yourself and not someone else."
"I wish my parents could hear you right now," Fred chuckled, his shoulders dropping. "I want them to be happy with me being happy."
"They wanted nothing more than for you to be happy. It just takes parents a while to realize what will make their kids happy."
"You're too smart to be a ministry drone, you know," Fred smirked, wrapping his arm around your waist and giving you a squeeze. "Too attractive too."

Falling in love was an acquaintance, but falling out of love was a friend. You knew it like your favorite knitted cardigan, the smell of the Hogwarts greenhouses, and the freckles that kissed Fred Weasley. You saw it in your mum and dad's relationship, and now, you could see it in your own. It was a broken quill, leaking ebony ink into your life.
You knew falling out of love, but it still unsettled you. It still made your stomach turn at how uniform and scheduled the signs came, how eager it was to hug and greet you. It came disguised as busyness and missed dates but morphed into brushed-away kisses and silence. The silence was the point of no return. The silence was the moment your mum warned you about when you woke up with your father's things cleared from the house.  "When you spend the entire day apart but can't think a single word to say- that, my love, is the silence of a dead relationship."
"Oh, I didn't think you'd still be up."
You shifted to look at the silhouette frozen at the end of the boys' banister. You wanted to scream at him; tell him that waiting around for him gave you a heartache so terrible you couldn't lay without choking on sobs. The way he said it as if he hoped you were asleep made you want to wake the entire Gryffindor tower. At the moment, in that anger, you saw your mum.
"Yeah, I didn't think that I would be either," you echoed, the anger replacing sadness. If falling out of love was a friend, it was a family friend.
Fred walked over to the couch, to the fireplace, to you, but he felt further away. "I, um, heard that you got your St. Mungo's internship letter."
"I did." Three weeks ago, to be exact. "I meant to mention it to you, but, well, honestly, you have been avoiding me. Perhaps not consciously, but still."
Fred's hand fidgeted with a string on his sweater— the sweater you got him for his birthday a year ago. The bright colors seemed dulled by the atmosphere. "It's not like I'm looking at the Marauder's Map to actively avoid you! Also, you can't act like this is all on me. You haven't tried to reach out to me at all. You don't even show up to meals anymore."
"Because of the sight of you laughing with Katie, Angelina, and George while we're eroding into nothing tears me apart." Your face was hot, but it was not dry enough to be entirely from the fireplace. "I would rather my stomach twist in hunger than my heart from another person letting me down."
"That's not fair, and you know it!" A classic line.
"It is not true?" The tear and your "nonchalnt facade" were slipping. Honestly, screw being detached. If this relationship was going to burn, then you were at least going to scream in agony. "We're just another partner again, Fred! We're just another couple of teenagers who thought they could beat the odds; instead, they got their asses handed to them."
"Maybe if you were always looking for a flaw, we'd be fine," Fred bit back, his face and eyes red. "I love you. You love being loved. You never truly loved me because you're so paranoid about me breaking your heart. Why did you even get in a relationship if you can't trust anyone?"
"I-I" You were stunned, frozen in the Gryffindor common room. "I don't know."
Bitter were the words that rolled off his tongue and the taste of honesty.
"I did love you, or do? I want to love you because, Merlin, you're you. I-I just don't know. I look in the mirror and see my mum. I see someone is all in their head and is impossible to love." You were shaking and burning up as you took a step back as Fred took a step forward.
"Stop, y/n. I know you inside and out. I know your laugh a mile away and can find your crossed t's in a pile of scrolls. I know that nothing makes you more like your mum than running away from this conversation."
In the light of the fireplace and blurred by your tears, there Fred stood. It was the Fred you loved, the Fred who catiously took your hand and guided you through love. It was the Fred that was unquestionably deserving of a real conversation.
"You're Fred Weasley," You sniffled. "You told me my hair was pretty while we cleaned cauldrons in detention. You told me that flowers couldn't grow around me becuase they'd get too much sun which is the cheesiest thing anyone has ever said. I love you so much, but we need to break up."
"I-"
"No. I-I," you sobbed. "Merlin, this is hard. I-I want you marry you someday, to see your store flourish in Diagon Alley, to see you be a dad. I want you. I want you so much that I want time to process us. I want time to think about what love means to me. What this relationship is. I want you to experience all of life without worrying about me being a flight-risk."
"I want you to — more than anything — walking away from this relationship with hope rather than heartbreak," You continued, wiping your face dry.
"I love you. I would wait years for you if I knew you'd find peace," Fred whispered, his hand reaching out for yours. "I can give you the space without losing you, can't I?"
"No, you can't. I need to figure things out, and you need to live a life with so regrets while I do." You took Fred's hand and squeezed it lightly. "Fred Weasley, you have changed me life. You were the one who taught me what unadultered, honest love was. It's this. It's me letting you go."
You dropped his hand hesitantly. "Right here and right now, I've already started to heal."
