i loved episode 4 (am i too late?...yes)

This is episode was so great imo. Before I get started, I just want to note that I know all of this has already been said at this point 😭😭. This post will probably come out pretty late, so everyone will have already said all this stuff and articulated it better than I have haha. I’m pulling a lot from other peoples speculation on Twitter and here as well (a lot of this is regurgitated from other, much smarter people's work haha).

I loved the tone of this episode. So melancholy, so full of mirth and love. I live for festival episodes, because they always come with a slight bittersweet tinge that serves as a reminder that summer doesn’t last forever. I also really liked seeing the bros do all the traditional festival stuff. seeing them actually active for once was a nice change of pace lol

In this episode, that classic festival bitter sweetness comes in the form of the brothers reflecting on past “festivals” and in a really meta sense, past seasons. As many Japanese fans pointed out, this scene really felt like matsubara speaking directly to the audience through the sextuplets. He laments the loss of fans over the years, but admitting that times change and the excitement of the first seasons has dissipated. He also comments on the fact that he can’t do as much either.

Imo, this could either be referring to the fact that there’s technical issues within Pierrot that limits his creative vision OR that there’s literally not as much he can do because he wants to explore the characters/keep going with the series but still honor the source material with the gags, and he struggles to maintain that balance. But at the end of the day, he worries whether the fans are entertained, whether he’s delivered the spirit of osomatsu kun/san authentically.

One great detail that I liked was that at the end of their discussion, they look up to the stars. This shot is really lovely imo, because the sextuplets look up at their “god” fujio akatsuka, while also looking at us, the audience.

So matsubara gazes at us, the audience who he writes this series for as well as the original author, who he must honor through his writing. He wonders how long he can keep this up… will he have the energy and the funds to continue? Will people still show up for each season? Or will the fans slowly wane as they have been for the past 10 years? I get the sense that this was him really expressing his love for the show and hoping he can keep delivering it. Choromatsu's expression is contemplative, but hopeful and content.

In the past there have been some (not so subtle) complaints about things like subjective comedy and compliance and the toxicity of the comedy industry in general, but I feel like this scene didn’t really have the same jaded tone as previous meta scenes in the show.

This scene was also great, the music had this eerie vibe that really captured the importance of this festival for them.

In it, we also see this young girl watching from afar, almost judging the ritual.

She’s been speculated by many to be reiko akatsuka, fujio akatsukas daughter and the current president of fujio pro. I thought this was just speculation, until I looked up a photo of her and it became very obvious that it’s supposed to be her haha

According to the fujio akatsuka wiki, APPARENTLY she shows up in some illustrations, but I can’t for my life find any of them… if anyone finds any please let me know!

I’m not sure where this is from, but this page is about reiko reading her fathers manga after his death and deciding to live her life with laughter and brightness

Not only that, but this (shrine? Tombstone? Piece of artwork?) that they sheeh to in honor of fujio akatsuka is very real and was also created by reiko akatsuka.

This post is getting super long so i'll keep the rest of this short. i really liked how important iyami was to the carrying of the omikoshi. it's notable that him and chibita were the ones on top of the omikoshi while the sextuplets were the ones carrying it. its a fun allusion to their roles towards the end of osomatsu kuns run, where the sextuplets became supporting characters and iyami and chibita took center stage. the omikoshi itself was fun too, considering the fact that multiple people on twitter pointed out that the omikoshi was filled with all of akatsuka's favorite things

all in all i really liked this episode and the acceptance (hazing) of the riceballs and nyaa chan as characters in the canon. they're not just background npcs, they stand on equal footing with the rest of the akatsuka characters.

making new ososan seasons must feel like carrying a huge omikoshi across japan. its heavy, tiring, painful, and emotionally taxing. but it's deeply important to the characters and the writers to bless the country with the spirit of akatsuka. to bring the joy and the laughter that his manga brought to the country to the people of japan now. this episode felt very fitting for a 90th anniversary season.
