The amount of frustration you were currently experiencing while trying to even out your eyeliner was even more intense than usual. Despite having been wearing makeup for years, getting completely dolled up was a rare occurrence. Eyeliner wasn’t a daily staple that you reached for when you got ready for work in the morning, so you were out of practice in application. 

You huffed, examining your left eye in the mirror and seeing just how uneven the strip of black was compared to your right eye. You dabbed at it carefully with your pinky to see if you could try to save it, but all you succeeded in doing was smudging it even more.

You stood back about a foot from the mirror and studied your entire look. Tonight was date night with Spencer and you would be going to a nice restaurant downtown that you had been wanting to get reservations at for ages. It wasn’t a particularly special night to be doing something so fancy, but when the restaurant had told you that tonight was available, you jumped on it. 

The little black dress you had chosen for the occasion had been sitting in your closet for a couple of years, but it was the fanciest thing you owned. Unfortunately, your body was no longer the same size that it was when you originally bought the dress, and the fabric now clung in places you didn’t want it to, and hung loose in places it shouldn’t. No matter how you tried to maneuver it around, it didn’t look right. You had hoped that doing your hair and makeup would somehow make the look come together but, so far, it wasn’t. Not even a swipe of your favorite red lipstick could make you feel better.

Spencer was waiting out in your living room and you knew that he looked effortlessly handsome in his dress shirt, tie and black blazer. All you wanted was to look good enough for him.

The tears that stung at your eyes surprised you; you didn’t normally get emotional over clothes and makeup, and it seemed like a silly thing to be upset about, but tonight your emotions were out of whack and your patience was wearing thin and you just wanted to throw everything across the room and curl up in a ball.

But you couldn’t. You had to go to dinner.

As you sighed and peered into the mirror again, trying to see what you could do to save your makeup, you heard a light tap on the bathroom door.

“(Y/N)?”

“Uh, I’m almost ready, Spence,” you said, trying to keep your voice from sounding pained. “Give me two minutes.”

The door creaked open a few inches and you could see Spencer peeking his head inside. When he saw your reflection in the mirror, he smiled and opened the door wider.

“You look beautiful.”

He expected you to blush and smirk at him the way you always did when he attempted to compliment you, but your reaction tonight was different. You glanced down at the sink in front of you and let out a long sigh. This was enough for Spencer to realize that something was wrong and he frowned.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t look beautiful, Spence.”
