Wally’s Top Ten K-pop Songs of 2012 (Spoilers: No Gangnam Style)
10. Seo In Young – Anymore Man, if Kelly Clarkson were born in Seoul instead of Texas, this song could’ve been number one on this list.
9. Dal Shabet – Mr. Bang Bang It’s all in that hearty cowgirl beat, picking up from a trot to a gallop in seconds, and leaving a trail of stardust in its path. It certainly doesn’t lose points for sounding like a track off the Super Monkey Ball soundtrack, although it wouldn’t be the first song in their catalog to do so.
8. Yoseob – Caffeine (feat. Junhyung of B2ST) Behind that quaint baby face (out of place in K-pop’s landscape of impossible beauty), lies one of the best male vocal talents in his genre, modest in delivery and deceptive in range. The way Yoseob effortlessly twirls the word ‘caffeine’ into a falsetto during the song’s closing seconds is two milks, extra sugar.
7. f(X) – Electric Shock Intriguing in that it doesn’t quite know what tempo it wants to be, Electric Shock’s best moments are when the stuttery beat recedes and the girls call out warning to the lightning storm that’s coming. If ever there were a pre-chorus that made a song, this was it.
6. 2NE1 – I Love You Bad girl longing at its finest. What’s impressive though is that at this tempo, you’d be hard pressed to find more emotive singing this year. Don’t you just want to mosh during that final breakdown?
5. After School - Flashback Dubstep has killed many a promising K-pop song—later live performances of Hyuna’s hugely popular Bubble Pop omitted the afflicted portion altogether. However, if ever there were a proper home for one of these hellish breakdowns, this would be it, nestled in this brooding Europop number. Honestly though, I think it was that random “Strike a pose!” that sealed the deal.
4. Orange Caramel – Bubble Bath Technically, the song’s a (welcomed) exercise in restraint for the trio—no manic saxes, no vaudeville pianos, just a dull-toothed synth. The real trick here is the cutting passive aggression the girls manage to deliver with their baby-soft voices. No knowledge of Korean necessary to taste the snark.
3. Kara – Pandora Pandora has one of the best first fifteen seconds of any song this year. First there’s that killer haunted house synth line and suddenly KARA’s commanding us like pretty, evil dentists to “open up, ah oww”. The rest of the song is merely breathing room until the full moon rises again and that sinister melody returns. Come to think of it, K-pop’s always needed more Halloween jams.
2. Nine Muses – Ticket For all its progressive fashion and visuals, K-pop rarely surprises sonically. Then here comes Ticket, with its reggaeton (?!) beat, surf guitars, and some truly bizarre vocaloid hooting. On paper, it shouldn’t work, but in the hands of producer/wizard Sweetune, Nine Muses somehow delivers the perfect K-pop Bond theme competitors have been trying for years to make.
1. Big Bang – Bad Boy There is something delightfully pitiful about Bad Boy, from the opening chords, to the mopey, late-afternoon beat, to the gleaned bits of English (“Baby don’t leave me, I know you still love me.”) They’re supposed to be singing to their lovers, but really they’re practicing in front of a mirror, heads down, teeth clenched. In a genre marked by manufactured, robot-like joy, this year’s best came in the form of G-Dragon in a safety pin earring begging for your forgiveness. Desperation, K-pop style.

#148 Dragonair - A docile Pokémon that exudes a gentle aura that can be felt by people nearby. Dragonair host a large amount of energy within their bodies, which they discharge from their orb crystals, allowing them to change the weather. These orbs can also be used as a source of light. Dragonair can grow up to 13 feet long and live in large bodies of water like seas and lakes.
