Fred Weasley x Hermione Granger x George Weasley Fic recs
(Mainly Fremione tho)
Fred & Hermione & George
Escapism: Hermione parents die when she is little and she gets placed with her abusive uncle. One day she runs off to find her own adventure and meets the twins in the woods. They instantly become besties. Adorable thing.
fun will be made if it is fun that is craved: Ex prankster Hermione plans a prank to deal with umibitch at the same time as a gift for the twins for the valentine's secret gift exchange
Fred/Hermione/George
Banned Books: Harry and Ron get mione banned from the library for two weeks and she is pissed. The twins cant miss out on the fun of helping her spirit a bunch of books away from the library and getting revenge on those two
Fred/Hermione
All One World: I rly adore the characterizations in this fic. Enterily Fred pov. He got insecurities about everyone thinking him stupid and that he can only ever be a comic relife. He also hates how they always talk as if he and George are one person, not different people no matter how similiar. Hermione wears his rule abiding rigid front as a defensive mask. She got more then one and theyre so perfect even Fred in the know sometimes forgets thats what theyre are. She is also sarcastic and witty and very caring and observant. She never fails to identify him right or know the right thing to put him at ease and he does the same for her pulling her out of her flunks.
Band Tees (You're Fucked.): Very bittersweet it literally made me fucking cry by the end. Fred had loved Hermione since the yule ball and he is the only one who knows about her love of grunge punk. They both share their love of punk music. It's just theirs.
Methods: Fred starts a playful flirty banter that Hermione decides to indulge him with joining in. Thats the first time she startles him. She is deadpan and sarcastic and all for teasing him and startling him. They keep up a fluid flirty banter no heed for the audience
A Charming Fairy Godprince: After Ron's mess up before the Yule ball Fred & George takes it into their own hands to cheer Hermione up and be her magical godfathers like Cinderella's. They rewamp her dress and enlist Ginny for her hair. Of course it cant go without over the top very obvious flirting (on Fred's part) and various compliments.
By the Common Room Fire: Fred is sick but still with the usual drama and flair lays across Hermione's lap and demans head scratches like a cat.
Destiny and Chicken: Hermione is sick so Fred brings her soup, tea and potions.
Exploding Potions and Accidental Revelations: Amortia explodes over Hermione in potions class so she smells like what everyone is attracted to. Fred commits social suicide by announcing she smelled the same as usual before knowing what is going on.
Favourite Weasley: The twins invite Hermione out to the Quidditch match. Who's her favorite Weasley? Wrong answers only.
It Looks Better On Me: The twins accidentally soak Hermione and it’s laundry day so Fred throws his jumper at her to wear. Then Fred is sick so he ain’t playing but out to watch the match so Hermione pulls her hat over his head. Later when he is better he flaunt it around so Hermione decides to steal another of his stuff in retaliation. It sparks an all out war.
While You Were Gone: Ron and Harry leave cuz they need a break after the war leaving mione behind which brakes her and the twins take it into their own hands. They basically adopt her as their third. Its rly fluffy and wholesome, warm and fricking hilarious . It also gonna make u wanna murder Ron and Harry :)
A Small Change: Fred got such a good grades in OWLs they thought he cheated but he didn', he is panicked about doing so well and wanna actually try in school so he writes to Hermione and she helps him. They become rly good friends from then and start to exchange letters and meet up a few times. Theyre rly wholesome and his anxiety about school and his family's reaction is just so real
don't you know you've got the best of me?: Hermione meets the twins and their friend group on the train and they meet again at the sorting. She ends up talking with the twins a few more times and they end up adopting her into their friend group. She aint rly that close with Harry and Ron and she befriended them much later. Most of her friends are all of the twins' year. She is the closest with Fred and theyre best friends, he is also very protective and possessive of her.
Whole New Meaning to "Mooning" Over Someone: When you throw something during the full moon your soulmate 'catches' i. Aka a frustrated Hermione throws her book during the full moon which consequently smashes into a poor sleeping Fred's face.
i wanted to see you again, so please be gentle: Soulmates and modern au with under caffeinated disaster Hermione bulldozing over the interaction not even realizing she met her soulmate. Absolutely hilarious first liner.
Straight Into My Arms: Every year since he was five fred asked for his soulmate from santa till one day they literally fell out of the sky and landed in their arms
George/Hermione
Fancy a night in?: Post-war. George finds any excuse to go over to Hermione's and make her smile.

I don’t want to be alone right now
fred weasley & hermione granger | friendship, fluff
He found her huddled in the garden, the curls a stark difference from the hydrangeas and rhododendrons flanking her on both sides. Ugly, gasping sobs rent the otherwise still space. It wasn’t yet midday, but rather that brief break after the morning bird calls and just before the afternoon drone of insects.
Fred didn’t know what had compelled him to walk out the back door. Call it a sixth sense, or whatever else. There was a tug; he followed.
Now, he stood watching her. Hermione.
What is she doing here? he thought. Why is she crying?
Fred’s first impulse was to hunt down his baby brother and drag him outside. Surely he was the cause of all this, or, at the very least, knew what had happened. Fred could never figure out what it was that bound the two together aside from–and here, he scoffed–life and death. Without Harry Potter, without Hermione’s propensity to help, help, always help, the two shared very little in common.
He loved Ron, but he also knew Ron was a bit of a dunderhead.
“Hermione?” Crouching down, he tried to keep his voice soft. He didn’t want to scare her off.
She gasped anyway, face jerking up to reveal blotchy skin wet from distress. “F-Fred?”
He held both palms up in an entreaty. “What’s wrong? Is there anything I can do to help?”
He knew what her answer would be before she voiced it, because this was Hermione. She’d rather bear all the weight of her troubles until she collapsed rather than burden anybody else. She was like Harry, in that way. Maybe that was where Ron fit in–the only one of the three who sought help, and received their trust in kind.
“No, I-I’m fine. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have–” Now she stood, wiping at her face with the sleeve of her jumper. Her eyes darted around as if she was ashamed. He could tell she was looking for an avenue of escape.
“Don’t apologise. I come out here, too, sometimes.”
“You do?” There was so much hope in those two words.
“I do.” And he did.
Of all his siblings, only he and Charlie seemed to take comfort in Mum’s garden. The others would rather sprint off to the fields for Quidditch, or to the orchard to get lost among the trunks and apple-laden branches. He did, as well, but when he wanted quiet–true quiet–he came here.
“Why?”
“It’s one of the only places where nobody thinks to look for me.” Except for George, of course. But George, unlike the rest, knew when to give him space without being told or asked for it. “Is that what you would prefer? For me to give you privacy?”
She chewed on her lip as she seemed to consider him. He observed her back, waiting patiently for her to reply. Moisture still clung to her lashes, framing her dark, gold-flecked eyes and making them appear even larger. They reminded Fred of fire sparks in the night.
“No. I don’t want to be alone right now, even though I did earlier.” The small smile she sent him felt like a win. Her cheeks flushed as he rewarded her with a grin of his own.
Almost shyly, she took his offered hand, biting her lip all the while. She allowed him to lead her over to the stone bench above which wisteria hung with its heavy perfume. She didn’t pull away when he continued to hold on.
“Now, who do I need to go and beat up?”
Her tinkling laughter was a balm that soothed as much as delighted. Fred didn’t know it yet, but this was the start of something lasting and beautiful, a connection that would save him when all seemed lost.

Letters From the Past
My entry for @liquidluckdrabblechallenge’s prompt 65. Set after The Path Behind the Burrow but easily readable as a stand-alone epistolary fic.
Prompt: “I’m proud of you”
Words: 616
Diagon Alley, London, June 4th 1903
My dearest,
Since I left I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses and your tears. The charms of the incomparable Hermione Granger kindle continually a burning and glowing flame in my heart. I think my body is going crazy with yearn and I wonder if you want me the way I want you, if you’re reduced to a thing that desires me as well. How did I love before I knew you, before I possessed your affection? My life seems to stop when you’re not around, I see no further meaning in anything. When, free from solicitude, shall I be able to pass all my time with you?
Yours, Fred
Canaan Way, Ottery St Catchpole, June 9th 1903
My beloved,
I can’t forget the feeling of your blood on my fingertips, the hotness, the wetness, all melting together to show your bravery and defend my honour. Nothing compares to your bruised hands, nothing like the deep reverb of your laughter, violent like a flash of lightning. My body has been filled with you for days, and I can’t say how every time I ever put my arms around you I felt I was home. You have ravished me away by a power I cannot and will not resist. Yesterday, I composed a beautiful letter in the sleepless nightmare hours, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. I will take the first train I can hop on after my mother’s full recovery from the flu. Wait for me.
Ever thine, Hermione
Diagon Alley, London, June 11th 1903
Ever mine,
Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you. Continue to love me, never misjudge my most faithful heart, tearfully longing for you. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any more by giving myself away like this, but oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you, I love you too much for that, too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art, but you have broken down my defences and I don’t really resent it. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter, and your kisses calm my raging mind. I cannot exist without you; I am forgetful of everything but seeing you again.
Yours, Fred
Canaan Way, Ottery St Catchpole, 15th 1903
Dear Fred,
Everyone will be furious with me for this but they don’t understand us. I feel it’s only with you that I can do anything at all. We should’ve never parted at all, earlier in the month: there are such wide abysses now of space and land between us, but we love each other selfishly, and that’s enough for me, although I would be utterly miserable without the hope of seeing you soon.
Yours, Hermione
Canaan Way, Ottery Saint Catchpole, June 16th 1903
Dear Ginevra,
I must inform you I will take a short trip to London to spend some time with your brother. I tried to resist the temptation, to clothe my feelings in exquisite words and dilute their starkness like you suggested, but it was all in vain: I miss him even more than I could have believed, and I was prepared to miss him a good deal. I’m sorry this letter is really just a squeal of pain, but it’s incredible how essential Fred had become to me. On a lighter note, I’m proud of you and what you’re building with Harry. You deserve it.
Your loyal friend, Hermione

Sick day
Authors notes down below!
This is my first real Fremione piece! Feedback is appreciated and reblogs are always appreciated too!
Requested? Sure is!
You might notice Fred uses a cane, I did this because I believe that he would need it especially since he got crushed by a wall and well that would probably come with some setbacks with recovery and mobility in general.
This takes place about a year after the war and in my mind they’ve been together since their fifth and seventh years respectively
IF I SEE THIS ANYWHERE BUT TUMBLR OR ITS BEING SOLD IT WILL BE TAKEN DOWN IMMEDIATELY. NO IFS AND OR BUTS
Ok I think that’s all! Enjoy!!
💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫💫
It wasn’t often that Fred found himself sick, but when it happened it hit out of nowhere. Today was one of those days. He woke up and noticed it was hard to move, assuming it was a flare up that still happened on occasion. He carefully sat up, and saw that the other side of the bed was empty, and heard Hermione downstairs in the kitchen. He found his cane propped up against the wardrobe and made his way downstairs, wand behind his ear.
Hermione heard the familiar footsteps and thud of the cane, and smiled when she saw her fiancé. “Morning Freddie. Flare up again?” she asks as he meets her by the stove, where she’s cooking breakfast. “Mmm I think so.” He replies, voice slightly hoarse, wrapping his arms around her waist, pressing a kiss to her t-shirt clad shoulder.
“You don’t sound good either love, take a seat.” “Mione, if I sit we both know I won’t get back up. I gotta move around a little bit.” “I know dear, but I’m worried you might be sick.” “Sick? What gives you that idea?” Fred asks, with a small cough. Hermione gives him a look as he sighs and props himself against the counter top.
“Dammit, today of all days too. Supposed to have a big sale at the shop this week before term starts up again and we have to get stock set up.” “George, Lee, and Verity will have it handled. This isn’t the first time one of you has been out sick.” She says, as she plates the food and walks to the table, where Fred joins her.
The eat and enjoy the comfortable silence surrounding them, until Fred starts coughing again. Hermione gives him a concerned look and he just smiles. “Love. I’m fine. Fit as a fiddle. That’s what the healer said last week.” He says, as she shakes her head. “A lot can happen in a week you know. Let me get the thermometer.” She says, as she leaves the kitchen towards the bathroom. She comes back shortly after finding what she needs and takes the cap off.
“Is that the ear one or the tongue one?” “Ear. The tongue one I think is lost.” “Alright. Get it done and over with then.” Fred says dejectedly, as she sticks the thermometer into his right ear and then the left. “You’ve got a fever. 39° C. Not a horrible one, but one nonetheless.” “Blimey. That might explain the aches, cause those usually show up in the winter, not summer.” He says clearing his throat, trying to suppress a cough.
“Freddie, go lay down. You’re looking a little pale.” “Mione, I’m fine. It’s a cold. Nothing more.” “If you say so, but if I see you wrapped up in a blanket with a heating charm.” “You won’t. Now let’s do these dishes.” He says as he levitates them to the sink, where he goes to start scrubbing them.
The pair get ready for the day, and Hermione sends word that Fred wouldn’t be in that day. She got a reply from George saying they had it covered. She hears Fred’s voice from the living room and finds him wrapped up in a blanket on the couch.
“Hermione, I think you were right. Pretty sure I got the flu.” He says, coughing again. “I’ll get some cough medicine and get some tea going. You just lay there and rest love.” She says, as she puts the kettle on, and she finds a peppermint tea bag to put in the water once it’s done boiling. She grabs that and the cough medicine and heads back to Fred.
He sits up and accepts the medicine first, grimacing as it goes down. “Blegh. That’s definitely not how cherries are supposed to taste.” He says as Hermione sits next to him. She gives him the cup of tea and he sips it before placing it on the coffee table.
“Well looks like we’re staying in today. We can thank Teddy or one of your customers for this I suppose.” Hermione says with a chuckle as she summons her copy of an Agatha Christie book she had started. “Mmhmm looks like it. Little buggers. Do you mind reading out loud?” “Not at all.” She says, as she thumbs through to where her bookmark is and starts reading.
They stay like this for a while, Fred interjecting comments and theories of who’s the killer. It’s not until the comments haven’t come in a few minutes that Hermione realizes he’s fast asleep, he feet resting on her legs, and he’s snoring gently. She smiles and continues to read, checking on him occasionally but letting him stay where he is so he can get some much needed rest.

The Annual Snowball Fight
Tumblr media
My entry for @liquidluckdrabblechallenge’s Roll the Dice Challenge – Winter Edition 2023. The prompts were this photo, snowball fight, ribbon and pleasure.
Plot: Since their first year at Hogwarts, the Weasley twins have become known for their sense of humour, their wits, and their epic snowball fights.
Words: 833
Hermione knew that this year she should’ve watched from the sidelines, that there was no way she could participate in the annual snowball fight organized by the twins and have the time to straighten her hair as she had planned to do for the Yule Ball, but Fred had made such a disappointed face when she had mentioned the possibility of skipping the event, and therefore desert the team she had been part of since her first winter at Hogwarts, that she had immediately shelved the idea. After all, she wasn’t a vain person, and although she wanted to impress Viktor and silence everyone who thought she couldn’t be on par with Fleur and the other girls invited by the champions in terms of beauty, having fun and spending time with her friends was more important. Sure, Fred’s presence was a pleasant addition, but she refused to accept she was jeopardizing the success of her hairstyle just to earn one of his proud smiles. If she had observed him less, Hermione wouldn’t have been able to distinguish the different types of grins Fred Weasley dispensed to others, but since, for some time now, he had become an interesting subject of study for her, she learned to recognize them. The most used was the one that lit up his eyes with a mischievous streak, but it was also a sort of mask, which occasionally slipped when he though he was alone, leaving room for the emotions of the day to quickly cross his face all at once. Hermione could’ve sworn that boy processed feelings differently than the rest of the world, and it intrigued her greatly.
Another smirk she often saw painted on his angular features was the knowing one he shared with his twin, the one hiding entire conversation that they didn’t need to have out loud. Every now and then Hermione was jealous of their connection, she would’ve liked to understand him without all the fuss, but then he shot her that smile he reserved only for her, different from the ones he sported with Ginny when he consoled her if her day hadn’t been exactly great, something less brotherly and more… In realty, Hermione hadn’t yet understood exactly what was different, but deep down she knew her best friend’s brother didn’t see her as a sister and she was grateful for it. Unfortunately, the redhead seemed to have picked up something on her part, and had learned all of her weaknesses, which he exploited to make her do what he wanted. One of them, was the pout, the very reason Hermione was now on the frozen grounds, her jacket zipped up, her gloves wisely tucked under her sleeves and a ski hat covering her hair and ears.
“You all know the strategy by now,” Fred said, but went over it again anyway, scanning their faces one by one as if they were about to go to war. It had taken almost an hour to build the shelter behind which they would hide when the battle became too intense, while the prize for the winner, a small figurine of a snowman, laid on top of a pile of pine cones and twigs, waiting to find out who its new owner would be. Hermione didn’t particularly care about it, nor had she ever been the winner before, so her goal that year was to get ahead of Ron, and prevent any member of the other team from using her poor athleticism to their advantage.
The first to go was Neville, who received a snowball right in the face. Seamus Finnigan followed soon after, but the opposing team recovered quickly, throwing out Angelina, on whose braids the snow had grown worryingly mattified, Katie Bell and Dean Thomas. A fortuitous throw from Hermione sent Ron watching from the sidelines, but the force of it almost knocked her hat off, requiring her to take refuge behind the wall of snow from which Fred attempted to hit his brother.
“I got Harry!” Ginny shouted, but her enthusiasm was quickly dampened when a snowball hit her square in the chest. George, who had barely been seen throughout the game, simply shrugged in apology, then disappeared back behind the enemy barricade.
“Here,” said Fred, when he noticed how Hermione was struggling with the hat’s strings wearing the thick mittens Mrs. Weasley gifted her the previous year. With expert hands, he took the two braids of yarn at the bottom of the ear coverings and tied them like a ribbon under her chin, making the pompoms bounce against the warm fabric of her scarf.
“All done,” he murmured, booping her frozen nose and sending a wave of heat down to her toes. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, it has been a pleasure being your teammate but I have to show my brother who’s the boss.”
“The pleasure was all mine,” she replied in a whisper to his back, her cheeks growing increasingly red behind the white smoke of her condensed breath.

Pumpkin Pastries
A late Fremione drabble for @liquidluckdrabblechallenge's prompt #55
Plot: Hermione is sad after her break-up with Krum, Fred delivers her favourite sweets to cheer her up.
Words: 530
Since Hermione had arrived at Grimmauld Place, Fred had yet to see her smile. Ron had told him not to worry about it, that it must’ve been girls' problems, but Ginny had mentioned a break-up between her and Viktor, and although it was Hermione herself who had made the decision, it was clear that she suffered from it.
“She called it a practical choice,” was all his sister let out after a long interrogation, whatever that meant.
So, Fred had made it his mission to make Hermione laugh, and with George’s help he had managed to get a loud snort, an eye roll and a smirk tinged with sadness.
“Maybe she just needs to be consoled,” his twin had suggested, after their last failed attempt to cheer her up, and he was probably right, but there was no way to do it without touching on the subject he wasn’t supposed to know about.
The perfect opportunity to dive deeper in what she needed came after one of their countless tense dinners, during which his mother and Sirius kept bickering about what was best for Harry, for the Order and for everyone else inside those damned dark walls. The owner of the house had stormed out before he could finish what was on his plate, probably to bring some dead mice to Buckbeak, while the Weasleys sealed themselves in their shared bedroom, prompting the other diners to scatter around the house. The only one who hadn’t left was Hermione, who was still glued to her seat looking at an undefined spot on the floor.
“You don’t seem to like it here very much,” Fred ventured, hoping to get her attention.
Predictably, Hermione flinched at the sound of his voice, but she recovered quickly and put back on the demure mask she sported for weeks now.
“There’s just a lot more people than I’m used to,” she replied, getting up to help him clear the table.
“We could go out for a while,” Fred ventured. “There’s a park nearby.”
“Your mother will never give us permission,” she murmured, before heading towards the kitchen.
“Is there anything else I can do for you?” he asked, wondering if falling in love was worth it, if suffering was all it came from it.
“Unless you know the secret recipe of Madam Puddifoot’s pumpkin pastries, I’m afraid not,” she tried to joke, but the words came out more depressing than she intended.
A small golden tray, dressed in the typical pink wrapping of the Hogsmeade tea shop and secured with an enormous light blue bow, appeared on her bedside table the following evening, accompanied by a note, written in Fred's unmistakable awkward handwriting.
Whatever you want, just ask.
Hermione didn't know if it was the scent of her favourite sweets that tickled her nostrils, or the idea of Fred breaking all the rules Mrs. Weasley had laid down since they arrived at Grimmauld Place just because she had a specific craving, but for the first time since she had ended things with Viktor, a sincere smile opened on her face, and the light of a new beginning seemed to reach her even in that gloomy house.

The naming of the magic schools is one thing but there's also: the one irish kid being known for blowing things up (also remembering that during the time the story takes place, the Troubles were ongoing, and at the time of publication they were only just winding down -- actually, the 1997 riots happened two weeks after Philosopher's Stone was released in late June, and the Omagh bombing would happen in just over a year, in August of 1998), the black man named Shacklebolt, the jewish boy having the name Goldstein, etc. Like it's bad naming and bad worldbuilding and there's a negligible amount of character development; again: the only two characters with a significant hero's journey are Draco and Dudley.
Ron's jealousy, as you mentioned, is yes, inflated sometimes in fan works to act as a motive for being "evil" -- but again, it's not resolved! Like every time I thought that maybe these kids would get some goddamn character development it's turned into a non-starter.
In DH: Ron is jealous of Harry and Hermione (the locket affecting him makes this character flaw more pronounced), Ron leaves. (time skip.) Ron returns, Harry asks him to destroy the locket. Ron sees an image of Harry and Hermione (his greatest insecurity), but destroys the locket, and Harry just says that it's not like that between him and Hermione and Ron just ???? doesn't show any trace of that jealousy about it ever again ??? his greatest insecurity is just. gone. and Ron is exactly the same as before he left. In the epilogue, he has his own fame and no longer needs to be jealous because he just??? "acquired" what he wanted?? He has: fame, fortune, the girl. Like his character flaw is never fully explored because in the end he's not denied whatever it is he's jealous of.
I think maybe if the author had like... got around to giving her characters problems that dealt with their character flaws so they could grow and change and develop I'd be a bit kinder but literally like. It doesn't happen. The kids who fought that troll in the girl's lav are the same kids who fought the rest of the war. They don't change. They're static, or cardboard, or some other metaphor for an unchanging, flimsy, thing.
Maybe it's that one can kind of extrapolate a character arc in them from canon? childish jokesters --> professional jokesters (own a shop now) --> helped run a rebel radio programme --> (Fred's death affecting George, in post-war canon-compliant fics)
I just can't hold it anymore, I am so curious!!! Like why?
So I've been consuming Harry Potter fanworks and not posting anything about them but there are some very good ones. But due to how one author conducts herself, I am discouraged with even posting anything relating to the said franchise.
But I am just too curious for my own good.
Like I've got a lot of Whys for the fanworks of this franchise. I even saw it in TV tropes.
Why are there a lot of stories that make it seem like the Weasley Family are fool of gold digging people?
In relation to that, it seems like when the Weasleys are portrayed to be bad, and traitors to Harry, the Weasley twins are always exempted from that particular treatment, like why? Why make the entire family, sans the twins, be traitors?
I can understand why Dumbledore gets this treatment, he did raise Harry like a pig for slaughter, one of the many major flaws of his "For the Greater Good" edict but what I don't understand is why make the Weasley family be bootlickers to Dumbledore's rhetoric?
On the other side of the spectrum, there's the Draco Malfoy thing. Good Draco Malfoy, he was a nasty piece of work, there's another TV tropes entry with regards to that, making him be good just trapped in a family that worships a noseless wizard, but he was still raised with pureblood rhetoric, so why?
These are just the four that I can think of right now.,. Just why?

Hey, so I have thoughts that are vaguely related to this! (under a read more bc this got away from me)
I'm probably not going to actually answer your questions at all, but again: I have thoughts.
I've read through other responses on this post about overt classism etc. but I enjoy meta-analysis, so...
First: I think that any one person's relationship with canon and fanon and fanfiction are inheritently unique: for instance, I've read a few fics where the Weasleys have a less flattering light on them. They're few and far between for me, but evidently you come across those fics more often. Tropes in a fandom as expansive as Harry Potter vary a lot, so this isn't a surprise; we just have different tastes, and that's okay! (I'm definitely not passing any sort of judgement here dw)
But also: fandom tends to, broadly, find whatever is missing in canon and add to it in fanfiction. Some examples: DC's Batman comics are notoriously gritty and dark, but you'll find a lot of fics that can be generally catagorized as "fluff." Star Trek aired at a time where there was no gay representation on television at all, and yet: Spirk. I can't think of any right now but I know a couple of shows marketed towards children make "angst" a popular tag.
I think what you're seeing in regards to Harry Potter, though, is a lack of moral-greyness. Or rather, Harry's ability to place every character in either "evil" or "good" catagories. (Dumbledore and Snape are good, he says in the epilogue. Hermione is good, even though she literally abucted and blackmailed a reporter, keeping Rita in a jar. Deatheaters like Crouch Jr. and Pettigrew are evil, even though we never learn why they joined up in the first place.) Harry, rather like the author, sees the world in a rather black-and-white fashion.
As a result of that, fandom likes to prove him wrong. The Weasleys may get hit with this backlash quite often, but there's definitely corners of the fandom that casts the Slytherin crew and Death Eaters in a rose-tinted light. Related, since the author came out as a bigot, lots of members of the fandom have shifted to the Marauders side of the fandom, and made a gay paradise over there. Good for them. Trans rights!
Additionally... there's not much in the way of character growth throughout the series? Draco Malfoy definitely has a character arc, but Harry and Ron are essentially the same throughout. Ron who sacrifices himself on the chessboard is the same Ron who fights in the battle of Hogwarts. If you picked up 12-year-old Ron and dropped him into the battle, he'd be scared, but he'd fight. So would Harry, if you did the same to him. Hermione I think gets a bit of an arc, learning to rely on her friends instead of her books, but she's literally the most ride-or-die character I've ever read: 12-year-old Hermione would wreak havoc if she was dropped into the battle. She'd just set people on fire.
Again, Draco has the most significant character arc: He goes from a bully to a repentant man - the same arc Dudley takes, by the way, though Dudley's is less noticed by fandom. So Good!Draco Malfoy is the logical progression of the arc.
This is because (and hear me out) the author is... not a good author?Like the concept was cool and we ran with it, but how different from canon sources are the chatacters you read about in fanfiction? What about the worldbuilding? Here's a hint: "wards" don't exsist in canon. The spell "tempus" neither. Whatever additions of Samhain or other religions weren't in the heavily christian-influenced book. Whatever you've read about the structure of the Ministry or Gringotts of even the Hogwarts staff -- that's fanon.
How much more developed is the world in which the Earthsea Cycle is set? (Why was Le Guin's work not considered the paragon of fantasy bildungsroman that Harry Potter was?)
(Honestly that bit is probably down to that PS was so obviously a children's book and kids were able to grow up with Harry, and that the marketing was better and etc. etc., and that as kids grew to be authors of fanfiction themselves the world in with Harry Potter is set became vague enough to play in - like a sandbox, this world could be whatever you want, and in whatever era you like.)
And I think some of what you mentioned probably comes down to "what would it take to get [x character] to [y action]?"
Eg. "What would it take for Harry to become a dark wizard?" Well, if he were betrayed by those he trusted, his family, the Weasleys, he might never trust anyone again, and with the right influences, become a dark wizard. And in that instance, it doesn't matter why the Weasleys are evil, just that they are, and that it forwards the plot.
I can't offer much insight into why the twins might be exempt from bashing, other than that they perhaps get enough of that from their mother: remember in OotP when Ron gets made prefect and Molly says "that's everyone in the family?" Ouch. The twins seem separate a bit, from the rest of the Weasleys, and that may be because they always have each other? I don't really know and I haven't really thought about it. I picked a ship before the series ended and I stuck with it.
There's a lot more on this that I've definitely under-qualified to write, but regardless, here's a response. Do with it what you will. Hope you get something out of my vaguely tipsy ramblings.
Just why?
