Today everyone is setting up for the show and unfortunately I can鈥檛 help my classmates because I'm finishing up and tying loose ends with my project. I have one more week till my hand in and I currently feel pretty confident at my pacing as I鈥檓 almost finished more so, I鈥檓 worried I won't get my prints in time and how I can afford it as prints are expensive their are about 10 images I wanted to put in a print book however I don鈥檛 know how much this would cost using any o the chatham or Rochester print shops. I also completed my updated project proposal for the end of the project.

I鈥檓 testing the crystal in direct sunlight since theirs finally some good sun my goal is to get it on my face or eye and photograph that, but it is really hard to angle the crystal onto my face as well as trying to shoot myself it鈥檇 be much easier if I had a model to shoot. Unfortunately it鈥檚 Saturday so theirs not many people I can ask for unplanned shoot on their day off.

I took some photographs of Tomiwa using the crystal I shot through it and also asked the model to hold it up to her eye to create some distortion. My favourite one is the last one as I like the angle of the model and the position of the crystal. Furthermore I also got Tomiwa to photograph my shoe whist I angled the crystal in direct sunlight to create the rainbow flare on the shoe unfortunately by the time we were finished and going to try using it on the model the sunlight was completely blocked by clouds and stayed that way for the rest of the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think聽I'm going to include these photos in my final piece as its a representation of the true work of the crystal. I also like the intensity of the rainbow in the second picture, I think the show works as a brilliant canvas as it an all white shoe. I do wish I got some more flattering editorial phots with the rainbow flare but I am pleased with the images I got.

Week 9
10/05/2019- I didn鈥檛 have all my work done unfortunately and thought I had valid enough reasons to ask the course leader for an extension. I luckily received one and continued the day with catching up on my blog post and fixing my personal development folder. I was scrambling to finish and edit more images. This week was very stressful for me...

When I went home this I tried artificially creating rainbows with my phone flash because I wanted to not have to photoshop it in and use my props more effectively. I also decided to use my hands as the subject as its something different and since I was shooting myself I realised It would take longer setting the self-timer and running into frame whilst trying to position the rainbow without being able to see if it was in frame and properly lighting the subject.聽

I edited more images from my shoot with Minnie I also had a tutorial with Roz and we went through all my images she picked out ones she like and I picked out ones I liked. Most of my images have photoshopped the rainbows in as the weather in England is rarely sunny so its hard to take pictures using the actual props to create rainbow lens flares and rainbow streaks on the model.聽
Tumblr media
The first image has a slight image of a rainbow I used a small triangle like prism and wanted to place in front of my lens just to try something different I actually like how it turned out because the rainbow isn't photoshopped in.
Tumblr media
Ive posted this image before but I re-edited it because I didn't like the first outcome I like this one better but聽I'm still not to pleas eased with the photoshopped rainbow. I do like the perspective of the shot and the models pose.
Tumblr media
I like this I photoshopped the flare over but it cause the images colours to dull a bit but I think it adds a vintage feel to it. Unfortunately its hard for me to not have to photoshop the rainbows in because the weathers never any good for the type of shoot I鈥檓 doing i imagine if it was summer it鈥檇 be much easier to get the type of shot I鈥檓 going for.

Contact sheets
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The contact sheet is so long cause their are multiple images of each shot one in raw and one in jpg. The black images are from when the flash stopped working when I was shooting Minnie. Some of them are also of Tomiwa when I couldn鈥檛 get the exposure right.
WEEK 8
Week 8 I was absent for the whole as I was unwell again my health is very unpredictable and debilitating when it plummets unfotrunately it gets in the way of my productivity and decreases my work ethic. I was panicking because deadline was just around the corner and I still hadn鈥檛 completed all of my project work.

The most progress I鈥檇聽make is reading the book聽I borrowed from the library on photo styling to get some tips and insight on model styling and positioning and try to apply it to my photos. I did find the book to be very helpful.

Today I edited some of the images from the shoot I did on Tuesday I edited them in photoshop.聽

I don't know what photos I'm going to get printed or if I'm going to do a book. since both options seem to be expensive. Overall I like how the photos turned out I think I鈥檝e got a good variety in the sense the angles are different and the poses are different I also took some full body shots which I usually struggle with. I also developed some photoshop skills with this task I learned how to retouch better and more efficiently; m research I did last week definitely helped me.

Today I did a spontaneous photo shoot with Minnie a fashion promotion student in my class. She was really easy to work with and knew how to pose infringement of the camera which I was greatful for considering I鈥檓 not that good at instructing it more so it takes me a while to feel comfortable giving orders. I enjoyed the shoot and got some really beautiful images. I used the crystal and cd disk to creat some distortion in my images I鈥檓 gonna have to photoshop some rainbows in because it鈥檚 really hard to refract the light without the sunlight to pass through the crystals to create some rainbows. I tried using a phone flash which to a degree works with the cd but not that well with the crystal.

Here鈥檚 one of the first tester images I took for the project I used photoshop to edit the photograph. I鈥檓 unhappy with the photo because I couldn鈥檛 get a sharper more vibrant rainbow and it also doesn鈥檛 really incorporate fashion into it but I their are aspect I do like of the photograph for explore the flare on the left hand side which I edited in the picture it wasn鈥檛 originally there. I like this picture and may end up using it in my final piece.

I鈥檝e spent most of my time in the library doing research. The top books I鈥檓 reading so far for research are: photostyling how to build your career and succeed by Susan linnet cox and Horst photographer of style by edited by Susanna Brown and published by V&A publishing. So far from what I read they鈥檙e very helpful and have given me a lot of insight on how I could photograph and position my models. Throughout these days I鈥檝e been looking into how I can my photos more impactful and portray what I want to the viewer. My indecisiveness started to effect my work flow so I thought going to the library would help and in my opinion it did.

I didn鈥檛 progress much in my work, I edited a photograph I took for my final images. I鈥檓 still doing some additional research for my projects and looking in how to style my subjects and what angles to shoot from. Due to the weather it鈥檚 hard to get sunlight to pass through the crystal or hit the cd so I鈥檝e been using the flash on my iPhone. I鈥檓 dissatisfied with all the images I鈥檝e taken i want to style the models better too as I don鈥檛 usually style I just shoot so I鈥檝e been looking into style too.

Light Dispersion
Dispersion of light through prisms聽
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Light dispersion occurs when light is passed through an object causing light to split as it passes through revealing all the constituent colours that make white light white. An example of this would be when a rainbow is formed, rainbows are formed when visible sunlight (blocked by no clouds) passes through the rain drops causing the light to disperse revealing all the constituent colours in white light; white light is made up of millions of colours but we can only see seven. We can artificially recreate this process using prism and CDs, lights travels in waves if a monochromatic(light only made up of one colour) light such as red passes through a prism the light will refract as it passes through the prism but the light will not disperse as its monochromatic. White light is polychromatic(made up of many colours) so it refracts when passing through an object such as rain and a prism and the light disperses. Since different colours of light have different frequencies they refract differently.
Light passing through a water droplet:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel when light refraction occurs naturally the process comes across as really simple but trying to recreate through your own means is quite difficult.

Today I did an independent experimental shoot using the sunlight and dvd disk to create light flares and figure out angles to shoot from to get different levels of light intensity. I was testing for which props were easiest to use I tested a triangular prison crystal, a plastic crystal bracelet, a silver cd and a blue dvd. I also tried to shoot through the props or tried to reflect light from the object into the camera lens to created light flares some props were better at this than others. (In this experiment I only used natural sunlight)
Crystal bracelet:
The crystal bracelet creates beautiful rainbow dots that fill a wide area it鈥檚 not as intense as I鈥檇 like it but I can fix that in post. Here鈥檚 the experimental test image it was very hard to find a position to reflect the light onto myself. It鈥檇 be much easier with a model. It was quite hard to angle the bracelet though and i had to be careful to not block the sunlight you have to hold the bracelet in particular way. The third image is me shooting through the bracelt using my phone camera it captured some light refraction happening as the sunlight passed through the bracelet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blue dvd disk:
Since you can鈥檛 shoot through the dvd like the crystals it was harder to find an angle that worked. However when finding the angle it creates beautiful reflections and intense rainbows it also cover a lot of the skin and is easy to find I found it be very useful quite good for a unconventional photography prop. DVDs can be bought cheap too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crystal prisim:
The crystal prison was the easiest to get the hang of since they鈥檙e made for refracting light. It produces the most variety of rainbows shape wise and I think it creates the most intensity too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silver CD disk:
For some reason the silver cd disk didn鈥檛 work for me it reflects white light and not refracted light I鈥檓 not sure why but my guess would be it can鈥檛 break apart the colour as well because the surface is more mirror like unlike the crystal wher light breaks apart as it shines through and the blue dvd as it has a moxture of colours as a surface.

Jennifer West
Jennifer West is an american artist who has received worldwide recognition for her work with film. West was born in Topanga, California she studied in Pasadena California, at Art Center college of design and received her MFA from there she received her BA from Evergreen state college in Olympia Washington. West is still working and living in Los Angeles. West is well known for her digitized films which she makes from hand using celluloid, she has produced over 70 films since 2004, when she began using this process to produce her art. West like many other unique and imaginative experimental photographers uses a variety of assortments to create a unique final visual. West has spliced, rolled and drenched her celluloid in pickle juice and taped it using Mylar tape. She has also used whisky to candle smoke. Her work process is imaginative and overflowing with originality she produces 16 mm, 35 mm and 75 mm film by manipulating celluloid. West may then decide to put the film through various physical ordeals such as dousing it in perfume, alcohol, walking on it, dragging across the ground etc. The distressed films are lastly digitized and made into looping video projections for museums and art galleries to display. Wets also produces zine booklets that explain and show the behind the scenes of her projects. West has an extensive art history she has had 15 solo exhibitions abroad and in the States, 8 projects and commissions, 2 immersive installations and 11 zines and of course as i already mentioned 70 films.聽
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like her images as her work almost looks like light trail and since she shot in film it creates the speculation of the viewer trying to figure out how she created such images. After much research it is confirmed the artist causes physical distress to the film to create such effects on her film. I like how in away she physically edits her film much like how photographers photoshop their digital images. I think my favourite images are the top film strip because they look like lens flares I like the contrast of the dark background and light Lens flare like spots.
