The eager voice of the tall woman was almost unnoticed by Eve but Chishiya’s was different. It was intriguing and calm, something she certainly needed after all the madness. Like following a breeze from the ocean, her head moved slightly up to look into his eyes and for the first time in hours, her lungs expanded with a deep breath.
“Eve”, a sweet but weak voice came out as an introduction. “What is this place? Do you know what happened to the people who disappeared?”
“Well, well, well...”, Niragi’s unmistakable voice came closer and closer to where they were. “What do we have here?”. At his proximity, Eve went back to looking to the ground already sensing the red flags he emanated before she actually was able to look at his face. “Chishiya, you’re not going to introduce me to your new friend?”. Niragi came into Eve’s personal space on purpose, towering over her and then leanin down to lay his head on her shoulder as she shrugged as a reflex. “Hello”, he said into her ear in a low taunting voice, adoring her fear. “What’s your name huh?”, he waited for a reply but nothing came out. “Cat got your tongue?”. And as he sticked his tongue out, Eve leaned away from him, finally revealing her face to the man. There was a moment of silence when both of them looked into each other’s eyes. “Eve?”, he asked, recognizing the woman from the library he used to frequent.
“N-niragi?”, the blonde stuttered, realizing the tall man didn’t ressemble that shy boy he was a year ago in the slightest.
It was as if he was hesitant on how to proceed and instead of going ahead with what he had in mind, he turned to Chishiya before clearing his throat. “I’m checking the new ones. Be sure to show the girl around, get her a comfortable place to sleep. A comfortable one”, he remarked.
hisbluemonarch:
Chishiya was briefly startled, though his face remained a sense of calm. He peered down only slightly, to note the blonde woman that had made her way here. Hikari could only watch, a quiet snort in amusement. How odd. Taking in Arisu’s words, Chishiya seemed thoughtful for a moment’s notice. He had reserved respect for the young man, truth be told. He found himself certainly helping him out in the near future, but as of now- here in this resort- he would not be so open with this. His eyes calmly scanned his surroundings before he would speak; he wanted to make sure Niragi, amongst others would not have a reason to suggest treason with the man that made himself known as the Hatter. Chishiya only turned his body ever slightly, away from the group at an off angle, and peered at the bonfire further ahead from his line of sight. ❝ She wouldn’t be the only one feeling that way. Look around you - deep down, all of these people fear every second of their lives. This is their only salvation right now; this is the only time they let themselves go, until another game is announced. Then, their fear shows. ❞ he mused bluntly. What he observed wasn’t far from the truth. However as long as everyone remained in this world, this is the constant state everyone would live in; Chishiya had no sense of fear seep through the expressions of his face, only that he knew deep down he too felt the same way. He, however, would always have the advantage. He had been here far too long now. He looked over to the woman, taking in her appearance. He wondered therein if it was the entire world that had fallen to this bizarre curse; a question that had no answer. ❝ Chishiya. ❞ he introduced himself quietly. Hikari had introduced herself eagerly in comparison.

Eve was still in a state of shock. She had been enjoying dinner in the city with the good company of her parents, celebrating a whole year spent in the country due to her father's job when she excused herself to go to the bathroom. The lights went off all of a sudden and something in the air had changed as well. She still remembered, there was this subtle scent of smoke, most likely a burning smell.
Curious about the voices from the tables falling silent in a matter of seconds, she hurried her way back to her family when she came to realize... nobody was there anymore. No matter how much she looked around or tried to use the restaurante phone to contact her parents, it was as if people had just vanished. And, in horror, she checked this theory when exiting the place, walking disorientated along the streets of Tokyo to find no one around.
That was how, after an hour spent outside, she came to find the bright lights of a letter which looked similar to a game board. She was afraid of walking into the signaled building since she didn't know it but hoping to find someone who could give her answers, she decided to go in.
Eve was hopeful when noticing 5 people waiting in a little hall but her hope vanished as soon as it lit up because nobody greeted her back and when taking a moment to analyze them, she realized that not only they looked scared and not in the mood to have an informal conversation but some of them had bruises along their faces or exposed arms. The only person who did care to force a smile back to her was a young guy with messy black hair although he looked still as worried as the rest.
It didn't take long to understand why. When the game finished, she was fortunate that Arisu went to her to guide her towards the exit because otherwise, she would have stayed there, curled as a little ball after the violence she had witnessed.
That's why, when the man was introducing the other 'players' he had recruited, the blonde woman stood behind them all, almost invisible with her 5ft of height. Her shiny black eyes were looking at the ground, trying to disappear, in a poor attempt of forgetting everything that had happened just a while ago. Slowly, she started to walk away from the group, not really paying attention to her surroundings, the only thing visible for her being the pointy kitten heel shoes she was still wearing back from dinner.
As she walked blindly, she stumbled against somebody else, her face hitting their chest part, impact absorbed by the hoodie they had on. She looked up for the first time since she arrived at the Beach to find a blonde Japanese man with brown eyes as Arisu spotted her from the distance and hurried his way to where she was. Realizing how lost she was, the boy gently put a hand on her arm, trying to call her back to the reality of her situation and seemingly pulling her away from Chishiya.
"Oops, sorry. This is Eve", she heard him introduce her but his voice was percieved as coming from inside a fish bowl. "She's... new to the borderlands. I think she needs some insight on what's happening here. Um...", Arisu turned to Chishiya, lowering his voice. "She's terrified."

The sun set, and out came the moon. Everyone came out from the resort hotel and spent the night partying. Loud music roared through the speakers, people were jumping into hot tubs and swimming pools. Some came to dance, some came to make out. This was a typical routine for players, a good number of them would often leave to compete in order to replenish their lifespan. By the time they came back, it was often celebrated in big gatherings. Takeru often planned the night to be like this- a continuous cycle of nonstop partying and drinking with no more responsibilities, no more laws tying people down. For Chishiya, however, he spent the night sitting away from most of the crowd. He was certainly no party goer nor a drinker in the least. In fact, such lifestyles he deemed rather silly and redundant. This did, however, provide him an opportunity to merely observe without creating a scene. After all, this is how he got around and got by most of the time. There was little to no room for being open, and it was every man and woman for themselves. In better terms, survival of the fittest. Hikari was by his side, following his gaze as he inquired and spoke about certain individuals he recognized. The most recent addition was a young man named Arisu, and some friends he had brought along with him. Chishiya recognized him from an earlier game he was in. He was certainly different, and could be useful to Chishiya’s gain.

The ‘game’, as Eve came to realize, had nothing to do with an actual game for fun and more with a living nightmare for survival. The screams from people could be heard nearby mixed with the roars of the beasts. She didn’t need to see properly to understand wild fauna was spread everywhere like killing machines. Each shot from the man who was on the ship with her made her jump and squeal even louder. He was laughing. Maniacally almost. Something she couldn’t understand when her body was shockled by horror and fear.
When the voice announced it was game clear, Eve’s legs were about to give up from supporting that uncomfortable position to stay hidden. Unluckily for her, the man noticed it because the threat he let out was loud and clear. With her heart about to escape her throat, Eve raised her hands up, showing her palms to the other person and trying to cover her head. The tiny girl looked like taken out from an elegant vintage fashion catalogue. Flowy pastel blue dress and kitten heels with matching color, normal attire in her day to day life but quite rare for how people used to dress there and certainly not appropiate for surviving a Spades game.
“Don-Don’t shoot, please. Please, don’t shoot!”, she whimpered, her forearms shaking as she made an effort to keep her hands up, her delicate black eyes trying to reach courage to spy in between them, And that was the moment her expression changed into a surprised one. He looked different. His face in particular. Adorned by piercings and beautiful silky hair that had grown out. Nothing about him ressembled that boy in trouble she had met in the past. Eve furrowed her brows, confused. Was it actually him or was her mind playing tricks after everything she had lived?
“N-niragi? Is it you?” .

The night fell over Tokyo and the surrounding areas and everything went dark and for a little while nothing at all could be heard. Then screens began to light up all around as well as some spotlights, all highlighting the arenas for the next games. Niragi had left the Beach together with Aguni and Last Boss to find themselves at the gate of a small amusement park close to the ocean. For a few moments the three men stood next to each other before stepping through the gates without saying a word. They didn't even blink an eye as the red lazer beams signaled they wouldn't be able to get out before the game had ended.
Once inside they walked into the middle of the park where a giant screen was waiting for them, which only showed how many player spots were left so far. "10 out of 24 spots left. This should be interesting." Niragi commented followed by a snort before looking around at some of the players that were lurking in the shadows around them. His trusted rifle was leaning against his right shoulder as it often did, please there had been no sign at the entrance that weapons needed to be left outside. For him games were way more fun if he could just shot, it made things easier.
As some of the other players dared to make eye contact with the militant he narrowed his eyes and just smirked at them before briefly pointing his rifle into their direction. The dark figure took a few steps back, making him snort again before he brought his attention back to the screen. And just a moment later a female voice could be heard from the boxes all around the amusement park. "Attention players only 15 minutes left until the game will start. 8 more players can join the game."

When the letter of the arena was on, Eve was still trying to process what had just happened a few hours ago. She was enjoying her vacation in Japan around the city of Tokyo with her mother, sealing a beautiful afternoon with a walk in the shopping mall. They were close to meet with the father but Eve wanted to try a new dress on before they left. And all of a sudden, once inside the changing room, the explosions. All eight of the warm lights around the mirror she was checking herself in went off, leaving her in plain darkness.
But to the initial surprise it was added a desperate uncertainty when she realized every customer and shop assistant had disappeared. She tried looking for her mother, even getting in touch with her father but her mobile phone didn’t work and every other phone she found, either in another shop or a public one, was useless too.
The fear increased when exiting the mall and finding herself alone and lost in the giant streets. That pushed her to walk and walk and walk in search of another soul, anyone, someone that could help her or tell her what was going on and, most important, help her go back to her family. And it was like that how she came across the arena.
Her wide eyes were so distracted by checking her surroundings that she didn’t really notice the lazer registering her in. At least there was an initial relief when she found other people inside. She walked to one of them, a japanese woman that was standing aside from the crowd and tried to talk to her. “Excuse me... Could you explain to me what’s going on here? What happened with the rest of the people?” However, the woman looked down at the 5ft of blonde before her and turned to the side, clearly ignoring her.
Eve didn’t understand anything at all. Her curiosity wanted to push her to speak at the group but, quick to notice weapons around, she decided otherwise, standing as hidden as possible in another corner of the park. When the voice of the game announced that players should choose a starting position and Eve saw the people near her heading to the different amusement attractions, she followed as well, not really knowing what she was doing, hoping for the best.
The ship swing. A perfect spot for hiding. Because if she had a talent, it wasn’t physical strength for a spades game. No. It was hiding. And being that small really played in her favor. Eve hid in between two seats instead of using one of them as support for her weight. She leaned down there and her head also went down once she spotted what looked like one of the armed guys getting into the ship as well. After the initial whimper when the rifle was coming closer, she covered her mouth shut with her palm, wishing that whatever this was, ended as soon as possible.

Eve took the offered hand as fast as she could, using it for support to get back on her feet. She looked past the gentleman to see if the dog was still there then stumbled over her own words: "Thank you, thank you so much".
It was only when she was able to take a deep but shaky breath in that she really had the chance to look up at her savior's face. Oh. The sparkle in his eyes made her blush unwillingly, turning her gaze back down to the bottom of her dress. She hurried to pull it down and noticed she had a scratch on her knee and a greenish bruise above the joint which immediately sent a pain signal when trying to lay her weight onto that leg.
"I didn't see it coming. They scare me", she commented, trying to pick up her bike, checking if the bouquet was still intact. "Do you think it'll let us go?", she gulped, giving a step to the side and hissing. That thing on her knee really burnt.

Eve looked up at the sky. It was starting to get dark and the spring sleeve-less dress she was wearing wasn’t enough to protect her against the temperature going lower. Even like that, the streets felt better than going back home to her abusive boyfriend. He had already made her lose her job at the local library, disturbing readers when coming in to look for her and making a scene in front of everyone. Now that she had finally managed to get a new job at the flower shop, she wasn’t going to let it go to waste for him, especially not in her first day. Luckily, they told her it consisted on going around the neighborhood and delivering flower presents people had bought so there was no chance her boyfriend could repeat the same behavior.

She looked back at her bike she was carrying by her side. There was only one bouquet left in the basket but she had been biking, then walking around the streets without being able to locate the address indicated on its paper note. She took the giant map she carried in the basket as well and unfolded it while turning right in the next corner. Where was that street...? She sighed, frustrated, and put the map back into the basket. Looking back ahead, she realized she had walked into an alleyway.
-Great - she whispered to herself and maneuvered the bike to turn around but once she was ready to get back on it, a huge black pitbull stepped into alleyway. Eve yelped and, at her sound, the animal growled, showing threatening teeth. She considered what to do. If to try luck and pass it by with the bike or if to wait there but none of the options seemed reasonable when she had such a fear of big dogs. She took a shaky breath in but the pitbull barked and she lost balance, falling off the bike seat and onto the hard pavement.
