Meenakari, also called enamelling, is the art of decorating a metal surface by fusing mineral substances on it. Meenakari was introduced into India by the Mughals. The process is often applied to kundan—articles of jewellery studded with gemstones set with a layer of gold foil between the stone and the mount on one side, while the reverse is lavishly enamelled using the meena technique. The lustre of the meena, the enamelled reverse side, increases over time due to contact with the wearer’s body and clothes.
The brilliance of the diamonds and other stones is effectively complemented by the multihued enamel of the meena. Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, is one of the oldest cities in India and has a very rich culture and history. It was the capital of the ancient Kashi region. The present meenakar in Varanasi claimed that the position of the art of meenakari was prosperous till about hundred years ago.
The gi tag for this was issued on 2015!!

Thewa is a special art of jewelry making which involves fusing of intricately worked-out sheet gold on molten glass. It evolved in Pratapgarh district, Rajasthan India. Its origin dates back to the rajput era.
The art of Thewa work came to be in Pratapgarh four hundred years ago and has ever since developed under the patronage it received from the rulers. In the late 19th and early 20th century Thewa work was erroneously described as a form of enamelling by the surveyors of arts and crafts of India. In fact, it does not resemble enamelling either in appearance or technique. For generations the artisans have produced extraordinary objects of ornamental and utility value. The colors of glass used commonly are red, blue and green, due to the non-availability of other colors. The desired piece of glass is encased in a frame of gold plated silver wire. A paper-thin sheet of gold, of the same size as the glass, is cut and a free hand sketch of floral or historical motifs is made on it, by special tools. It is then dipped in acid for a while and washed thoroughly with water. A mixture of cinnamon oil and another material known as ‘Rag’ is brushed at the back, to prevent the metal from melting.
The Government of India recognized and praised the Thewa Art by publishing a postal stamp of Rs 5 on Thewa on November 5, 2OO2.

Molakulmuru is a town in the Chitradurga district on the borders of Karnataka. This town is renowned for the production of a special garment, called the Molakalmuru Saree. These Sarees are usually produced in silk and showcase a number of motifs and patterns, usually inspired by nature. They received special patronage during the time of Nalvadi Krishnarajendra Wodeyar, prince of Mysore. Recently, Molakalmuru Sarees have received the Geographical Indications tag, referring to the specific origin and specialized production of the saree in the town of Molakalmuru. Molakalmuru Sarees with narrow border showcase nature-inspired motifs such as fruits, birds and animals. The peacock border saree made of mulberry silk is an imitation of the Maharaja Peacock design. Other Sarees from Molakalmuru also feature geometric shapes such as chakra and bugudi.Molakalmuru Sarees have to be carefully maintained as they are made of silk. These Sarees cannot be washed and should only be dry-cleaned. They should also be stored in cool, dry places in wraps of muslin. It is a good idea to keep moth balls within the folds of the muslin wrap. The GI tag number of Molakalmuru Sarees is 53. It was only granted the GI tag in 2011, though it has been produced since the 19th century.

Channapatna toys are wooden toys from the Channapatna town in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka. Traditionally, the work involved lacquering the wood of the Wrightia tinctorial tree, colloquially called Aale mara (ivory-wood).The origin of these toys can be traced to the reign of Tipu Sultan who invited artisans from Persia to train the local artisans in the making of wooden toys.
