**[BSD Beast Manga Ending Spoilers]**

YO I THINK THERE'S GENINUELY MORE TO THIS.

Okay for context and to recap, BSD Beast is an alternative storyline spin off where an Akutagawa is taken into ADA by Odasaku and Atsushi and Kyoka are in the Mafia with Dazai being the current Port Mafia head.

It was assumed that Mori had been killed off by Dazai or at least that is what the insider knowledge is.

In reality, Dazai killing Mori prematurely is the so-called blackmail the ADA tried to collect and use in their negotiation to help Akutagawa to be left alone.

But the agency didn't realise Dazai had never intended for the Port Mafia to chase after Ryuu because Mori was never dead.

Rather he was living a secluded life as an orphanage director awaiting for Atsushi's arrival.

Which geninuely bewildered the hell out of me reading it before that Mori could be good. Like a geninuely decent person but rereading this post clicked and I just realised how much Mori has always been in service of "the greater good" playing as the "lesser evil".

In this case scenario with Beast, Mori geninuely didn't need to play his slimes little tactics to maintain the Port Mafia when Dazai is the "lesser evil" to his predecessor and to Mori himself. That Dazai "saved his life four years ago and he couldn't have refused", thereby preventing Odasaku's death.

We're not sure on the details how exactly Dazai saved his life but assuming that this is a timeline where everyone got to live out "a good life" except Dazai then perhaps is this really what Mori wanted?

Dunno lmao but it's interesting.

Anyways here below we see Mori's manipulation again by asserting his own trial of determining how Atsushi can "support himself", issuing a fairly cruel order to get rid of sentimentality to move on.

And when Atsushi rejects that, Mori unveils the curtain to show Atsushi an orphanage ruled by support, care and kindness of Mori.

It's a beautiful sight full of joy with imaginative drawings of children and sounds of laughter from them at play compared to the dark, deary place Atsushi feared from his traumatic childhood executed by the director.

This? From that vampire bastard Mori???

But it makes sense. Maybe that's why he has always been a doctor that he much preferred to stay behind the scenes serving his community?

Whatever it is, Dazai trusted him to do this job properly and he did a good job. Wow.

Mori lets Atsushi knows how how he presents himself and breaks apart people through dominance and fear — probably with full awareness of how he treated Yosano and others in the past. He's actually being a good children's doctor here validating Atsushi's abuse (and also acknowledging his). [WHICH DEFINITELY MAKES THAT SCENE WORSE WITH HINDSIGHT]

Also Mori actually also is still presenting to be himself as a "better option" again with Atsushi, convincing Atsushi to stay with him. Never change Mori.

Atsushi then asks why Mori would do this and Mori admits that he did so because he doesn't want to see another repeat of Dazai's determination to die that he couldn't save. Interesting.

And we got a scene of parental Mori giving Atsushi a hug and the acknowledgement/validation he desperately needed all his life. Which uhh Dazai definitely didn't give huh? Damn Akutagawa in the OG and now Beast is this. Smh

And so yeah, I wonder what Mori actually wants for himself if he doesn't have to be so ambitious or like agree to maintain the trisector agreement with Natsume.

It's also worth noting that Elise is an adult here and she does echo his thoughts or acts the way Mori wants to as his ability. And so Mori choosing Elise in this form meant that he doesnt need her to be a fake Yosano/hypothetical pure-hearted child of society anymore when he has actual kids to protect and guard.

But in an ideal situation where Mori doesn't need to play his character down and Elise doesn't need to be a tool to manipulative people's perspective of him and for him to show a foolish affection of her to further degrade himself or hide behind her youthful appearance, Elise is just his support and companion. Still pricky and naggy but fair more independent and reliable.

Isn't that interesting?

Absolutely obsessed with Mori's ability to always make himself out to be the lesser evil. Like his power and influence is entirely derived from him being in an objective position where he can say "sure I'm bad, but I'm not as bad as that guy".

He repeatedly teams up with Fukuzawa in their backstory because he might be awful but "at least they both want to protect the city". He kills the old boss but assures the mafia's loyalty over time because "at least he's being rational and not indiscriminately murdering out of paranoia". He's the leader of the most dangerous criminal group in Yokohama but "at least he's doing this under Natsume's direction". "At least he's not Mimic". "At least he's not The Guild". "At least he's not The Hunting Dogs".

It puts a lot of people in this very awkward position because the truth is that he's not just saying he's the better option, he's framed and manipulated the situation in such a way that he genuinely is. And this approach is largely successful.

He gets the ADA's cooperation in the Guild arc

He earns Kouyou's loyalty by being a better boss than the old boss

He earns Chuuya's loyalty by being a better leader with advice to give (also by having the mafia be Chuuya's only home at this point, but that's not related to this post)

He gets the ability user permit by literally just not being Mimic and promising to deal with the situation

Most of the people in the mafia are loyal because as tough as it is at least they're not back on the streets or in the slums or wherever they came from originally

Puts Fukuzawa into this terrible, no-good situation where the mafia is quite literally the ADA's best choice for getting away from the hunting dogs - and he gets to demand what he wants in return

He almost always gets what he wants in return. It doesn't matter if people see though it because he's made himself the best option in an awful scenario. There's been a few times where this has backfired: he lost Dazai in the Mimic incident because he, once again, assumed Dazai thought exactly like him (he doesn't), and in Yosano's backstory, where framing himself as the lesser evil to the enemy wasn't enough because he was the only one in direct contact with her. For the most part, however, this seems to work out for him and it allows him to seize power, gain favours, inspire loyalty and just generally be a really canny leader.

It's absolutely awful. It's absolutely brilliant. In fact, I think it's got a similar premise to that one sales tactic (can't remember the name) where you suggest a stupidly high price and then barter it down to a "better deal" but the better deal was actually just the original price of the thing you were trying to sell and you intended to sell it at that price from the beginning. That's what this feels like, except he barters situations.

How do you do it murder man? Tell me how you keep doing this.

Funny enough I think Singa would begrudgingly let Malaysia hang about as long as Mal kept his mouth shut about being proud of Singa or insisting on the Big Bro title. Alas, the Peace lasts about 20 mins.

Can be read as platonic or ship. I do not view them as siblings, just personification of countries close to each other. Also not my only ship, personally feel that hws Asean countries have a Queerplatonic/poly bond between them.
