“It’s a dog.” If possible, Remus’s mood sinks even lower. He closes his eyes and slouches down over his crossed arms on the table. Did the tea leaves really have to rub it in like this? “You mean a wolf,” he mumbles into his sleeve. A lone wolf. The message couldn’t be clearer than that. A love themed Divination class on Valentine’s Day 1976 might have revealed more than Remus first thought.

Last summer I signed up for the Wolfstar Bingo, but didn’t fill any of my prompts in time. One of them was this fic, for the Divination Class prompt. I thought, “oh well, I’ll finish it and post it in time for Valentine’s Day!” Obviously, that didn’t happen either. But now chapter one is done, and as I don’t want to wait another 6 months, I decided to make today, the 14th of August, Halfway/Summer Valentine, as suggested by @polaroidcats. So Happy Valentine’s Day, friends! <3

Anyway. When actually considering the options, I don’t really think either of them would choose Divination, but for the purpose of this silly little fic they did, and take it at least somewhat seriously. So enjoy some pining Remus being damp and miserable :’)

I keep assigning magical creatures to everyone bc WHO WOULDNT WANT TO DO THAT????

Yes!!! I also wanna do some fun graphs/conclusions from the results+tags just for my own amusement (and maybe others’ hahaha). I haven’t voted yet myself, but this whole idea came from wanting Sirius and Remus in Care of Magical Creatures, and not personally seeing either choose Divination, which I only thought of because I’m going to post a fic today taking place in Divination class 😂 love the beauty of the multiverse<3

Also it made me grin seeing your tags about Remus in Divination, believing it and blushing when told he’ll get a lover, because that’s the vibe in my little fic — except he thinks his reading means he won’t get a lover. Sad and pining baby<33 I think the only way Sirius would take this class is if he takes all of them. But in my fic he’s very interested for the duration of the fic at least 😌

A useful thing to know about AO3 tags is that they're wrangled by humans. A human being will read your tag, understand what it means*, and then connect that tag in the backend system to other tags that mean the same thing (if there are any)

that's why, for example, the tags

and a million more versions are all searchable and filterable if you just tag one of them. A Tag Wrangler (the job title of a human volunteer who manages AO3 tags) has made sure that AO3 understands that those are all synonyms, so AO3 treats them that way.

When you're tagging your fic, or searching for a fic, or filtering a tag to find or remove works from the list you do not have to use every possible version of a tag. You just need to pick one - unless using more is a stylistic choice you're making, in which case have at it.

*or research what it means - which is why wranglers really appreciate it if you put (OC) behind the name of your original characters so that they don't have to scour every source they can find to see if it's a named background character in canon.

I adore the blog and I adore internet archive, but I have trouble searching the archive. It feels a bit daunting to explore more. Do you have any tips and tricks for scouring it? Thanx <3!

hi! yes. i have a few tips.

firstly, if i search using this formula, it will come up with far more specific results than if i just typed in stained glass. the internet archive is quite unpredictable at times (and there's porn on there lol) so be wary. you can also search in a similar vein with the command creator:"[insert creator here]" using either of these tools can narrow down your search incredibly.

you can also sort search results (for specific OR more general search queries) by media type which is incredibly helpful for me, as i primarily post photos on here. this is under the filter settings on the sidebar, really easy to navigate! you can also search by year or a range of years, or the subject tags (clumped by most commonly used within your search results).

one really helpful thing, too, is using google. sometimes i'll search like this:

and tons of results will show up with links similar to or matching your search.

other strategy would be to look through the featured collections:

the met and the cleveland museum have both made their collections public, and there's tons of art/artifacts/objects/etc that are all tagged with the metropolitan museum of art tag & are grouped together if you click under the images tab.

my general strategy for perusing the archive is a mix of all these methods, but also just clicking around. let's say you're on the page for this work:

if you click the date, it will take you to everything that originated on that date, and if you click the indicated tag, it will show you everything tagged 'woodwork' on the archive. then you can filter those searches by media type/year/subject or whatever depending on your initial search.
