So I went to Japan and got to stay in a ryokan for a night and definitely did NOT* spend time flailing about how the ryokan in Shadow at the Water's Edge is so accurate
(*lie)
ANYWAY, TIME FOR PICTURES
Apologies for the bad quality/bad framing on some of these. I completely forgot about taking photos until right when we were leaving to catch our train
Our room with tatami mat floors, set up with table for dinner:
LOOK, LOOK IT'S EVEN THE SAME OVERHEAD LIGHT
The table in our room was actually less traditional than the one depicted in SAW. It was raised high enough to accommodate western-style chairs (which I appreciate as someone with knee problems who can't sit cross-legged for long periods of time)
I didn't get a picture with the room changed over for sleep, but the bedding looked identical. And it really does just suddenly appear once it's late enough. The staff come into your room and change it over from dining mode to sleeping mode.
Closets:
The round inset handles!!
Sliding paper doors:
Courtyard garden:
Our ryokan didn't have a bridge, but it's the same stone pillar!
Onsen:
I obviously didn't take any pictures inside the public onsen since it's a bathing area, but it looked a lot like the game! There were even the different colored curtains to designate men's and women's. Thankfully, this ryokan didn't have a secret closed-off haunted onsen, so both were functioning at the same time. Once a day the staff would swap which bath is the women's and which bath is the men's because the two had different water sources and different materials, and they wanted to give everyone an opportunity to experience both.
The room I stayed in had a small private onsen with most of the same features as the public onsen. There's an area to the side where you wash beforehand with a short stool, bucket, and shower head.
The bath itself is covered by a roof structure and has walls around for privacy, but is still very much an outdoor space within the gardens.
And, last but not least, Lobby fish?!?

I would like everyone to know I read these in all of their voices while making this and imagined them saying these to me and if you don’t think any of them would say these you are dead wrong and will spend an eternity in Hell

people often rip into Rachel and Kim from WAC for thinking they could make do with a single high school degree between the two of them or expecting them to share one persona through college and I used to do the same…
but I think it’s important to understand that college was not their end goal. getting a high school diploma was not even their end goal. not being put in a foster home was their main goal. having someplace to live and food to eat until they were 18 was their main goal. their situation was so bad that they could not afford to care about a long term plan. they went to Waverly to get food and shelter, not necessarily a diploma. the twins are not dumb for this plan. they avoided poverty and the foster system by testing into a good school and keeping themselves afloat there. they just happened to be so good that they were put in the running for valedictorian which put college on the table.
if they’d become the valedictorian and gotten the scholarship, that would have been another deal altogether (and I assume they’d have had to figure out whether they wanted to just go for continued survival or if they wanted to pursue prestigious careers and how that would work), but their plan to go to Waverly was actually brilliant and successful given the small scope of their goal, full stop

Hey Clue Crew!
I totally forgot to tell you all!
So last October, I went on my honeymoon to Mexico City (wonderful and beautiful city full of history–highly recommend if you get the chance). The first day, we went to the museum of anthropology. A huge place!! You could seriously spend the entire day there!! And being the Ancient Mexican Culture nerd that I was (all thanks to SSH), I was in love. ♡♡
There was a room dedicated to Mayan culture, which was amazing and full of all Mayan antiquities!
Making SSH jokes the whole time.. you know, Normal Things people do.
"The Mayans loved Jade!"
But as we toured the whole area, I casually mentioned to the husband unit, "you know, the Nancy Drew Game puts a LOT of emphasis on King Pakal...but I don't see any mention of him anywhere??"
My complaint had impeccable timing! There was a staircase leading to a downstairs area? This was the only place that had a downstairs portion.
It started leading to a crypt looking area...
And then!
The cinnabar! The jade mask!! The tomb!!
King Pakal!!
I had a great time.
