Lila looked at her shopping list and sighed heavily. There was no way she was going to be able to find all these supplies for this Christmas party she had been asked to help plan. When she had been asked, she thought it would be a fun experience--but not when you work for a bougie private school like hers. Balloons, tablecloths, napkins, champagne glasses? Where the heck did they think they were? The Upper East Side? Groaning, she threw her hands down and felt the list fall and land into the puddle next to her. “Crap!” She yelled, louder than she should have. “Now what do I do?”

“Oh--as well as it could be.” Lila sighed, laughing a little at the amount of bags she was precariously holding. “It’s not easy trying to get gifts for all your friends and coworkers when you work during the slower hours.” She smiled softly, nodding. “What about you?” She raised her brow, looking over Thea. “You seem distracted--are you doing ok?”
“Oh, I wasn’t expecting you to be here.” Thea paused as she slipped her phone under her arm and turned to face the other, “Christmas shopping as well?” She nodded to the area around them when really she was just avoiding the office and the fact her mother was probably at her penthouse discussing who she could be asking to be a Christmas date to the gala her father’s company was throwing.

“Me?” Lila asked, her southern accent a little more pronounced when she was caught off guard. And she was--no one had ever asked her for cold advice. The poor girl could barely keep her extremities from falling off in the this weather and she could imagine anyone would want her help. “Well, I heard cuddling helps.” Lila blurted--her cheeks turning ashen as soon as the words came out of her mouth. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry--that was not supposed to come out.” She shook her head, scrambling for something else to say. “Uhm---you could always try doing jumping jacks. Working out is supposed to get the blood flowing and help keep people warm?” Way to go, Delilah. Make a fool of yourself to all the people of New York why don’t you?
“Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas time. The hot drinks, the warm blankets, those itchy sweaters, freshly baked cookies…that biting cold wind that makes my apartment extra drafty…the cold in general…If Christmas could take place in literally any other month, I think it’d be my favorite,” Noah sighed, pulling his winter jacket tightly around him and tugging on his hat. “My toes are freezing. I can’t feel my nose. They told me I’d get used to winter weather eventually, but I’ve lived here for two, three years now, and in Washington before that, and I’m still freezing. In fact, I think I’ve started feeling colder the longer I’ve been here. Do you have any tricks on staying warm? I’ll try almost anything now.”

Lila blinked a for a few--shocked that someone could dislike her favorite time of year so much. “Uhm, well--have you mentioned to her that it looks...tacky? Maybe she could take a few pieces down?” She offered, realizing it probably wasn’t her place to really give any advice but the woman had asked. “Though I’m sure you could pass it off as a random act of kindness to those around--what the season is really about, right?” She laughed a little.
“The shop I work at looks like Santa Claus threw up in it.” Hadley stated, “And I guess that’s what you get when you let your vengeful wife decorate your pride and joy— now, would it make me the Grinch completely if I took it all down?” Hadley wondered out loud, a small pause following her question, as she looked at the person next to her. The next set of words basically answering her own question. “And then set it all on fire.” Another brief pause, she shrugged a shoulder, “It’s gag-worthy, and unfitting as fuck. So, the Grinch, or a model citizen, really?”

Lila turned around instantly, her cheeks flushing as she noticed the upturned piece of fabric. “Oh, yikes.” She grimaced, trying to smile at the woman while hiding her embarrassment. “I was in such a hurry to get out of work that I didn’t even think to check. Thank you!” A light laugh escaped her lips as she turned back to give her an easier angle to help.
“Okay, hi, sorry, I know this is going to seem weird,” Bee said. She realized that she was going to sound supremely strange, but on the other hand she didn’t entirely care. “But your collar on your jacket is rolled up, and I wanted to let you know. I was about to fix it myself, but I figured that would be a little invasive.” She smiled at the person and hoped that they wouldn’t think she was too out there for being bothered by something so minuscule.

Slurred words
“Gina? She’s great...great. Like, I won’t lie--she terrified me when I first met her. I had never met anyone so....put together before. I didn’t think she’d ever want to talk to me, I’m certainly not on her level. But, for whatever reason--she did and wow, I love her. She lives her life differently than I do sure, but she pushes me to look at things differently and she is loyal. So loyal. She clearly cares for the people closest to her, fiercely. I love her a lot--I hope she knows that.”

“Of course, it’ll be our little secret, wink wink.” Maya laughed, trying to ignore the pain that followed that action. “She is very incredible, and I’m very very lucky to have found her physical embodiment in this world. Bless Jane Austen, really.” She was still holding Lila’s hand, Maya realised, but made no moves to release it. “I don’t mind the crying, but not today, tear ducts. Good, keep me together from crying, I will need it.” She shrugged, and then sighed. “Looking healthy isn’t the same being healthy on the inside, I’m told. I guess I get it from my mother…like a lot of other things. I mean…I think it’s me getting to know my mother a little better. Or something like that. It’s a messed up thought, we don’t have to talk about it.”
“Perfect--I quite like our little secrets.” They were far better than the other ones she’s keeping, that was for sure. Lila felt her cheeks flush and she waved her hand. “She is a queen, really.” She laughed and nodded. “I can do that--but then again, I’ve been making a great many people cry lately so I might not be the best at it.” She herself had cried more times than she wanted, but that was to be expected. “Well--what do you want to talk about, then?”

“Okay but I promised Charlotte a picture of me in a cowboy hat and cowboy boots so I plan to deliver on that as well, just letting you know.” He gave her hand a squeeze as they walked, listening to every word. He shook his head at her apology, easily waving it off. “No, I mean I didn’t know about that. May have to get us a pet goat,” he teased and squeezed her hand again, taking a deep breath so she could be prompted to do the same. “We don’t have to go in,” he said softly as he looked at her. “If this is as far as you get, that’s okay.” He didn’t want her to feel pressured just because they had driven all of this way. Even if she decided to jump back in the car right now he’d do it, but he had a feeling that she wasn’t going to turn back now that they were there.
He dropped her hand after a moment and looked around, breathing in once again to calm his own heart, nervous on her behalf. He walked over to the fence and pushed himself up to sit on it, patting the spot next to him so instead they could look out at the land, taking pressure away from actually stepping inside the house. “My parents always spoke about wanting to get a country house. If not down here, then upstate New York, you know? Imagine my parents out in a place like this? My pops taking care of some goats. I think that’d make him happy but he’d miss the Yankees too much,” he joked.
“Of course of course-- we can’t let Charlotte down.” Lila winked and grinned, nodding once. “They’re rather smart. I mean, not as smart as a pig but certainly not as stupid as sheep. Now sheep--they are the ones that fool you. So cute in pictures, so dumb in real life.” She replied airily, for a moment transported back to her childhood. She enjoyed her pet animals--even if they weren’t really pets. She had to stop hanging out with then after a while, it hurt her a little too much when the family had to sell them. She looked back at Jason and to the chipping door. He was right--she didn’t have to go in. But a small lurch in her lower abdomen made her think differently. Of course--the baby wasn’t actually moving yet; it was far too early. Call it placebo effect, but there was something that reminded her that this trip really wasn’t about her. I mean, maybe it was her hometown tour and her chance to show Jason about her old life. But the little one Lila carried--they deserved to see the place that created her.
“N-no. I--I can go in.” Lila said, tugging his hand. Her voice faltered, and it was clear she didn’t really believe she could. But she was going to try--of course she’d try. To leave now would be calling defeat and while Lila might be ok with that now, she knew that she couldn’t let these demons win. “Just...don’t, don’t leave. Not now, not ever, ok?” She said softly, biting her lip. She didn’t look at him when she said it, she didn’t want to have to explain herself. Lila’s entire life since her father’s passing was dedicated to keeping her friends as far away as possible from this place, and now she was knowingly bringing her best friend here. She was terrified he’d take one look at her past and decide it was too much. Not that he gave any indication of that before, but the thought still plagued her. before she knew it, though, they were at the door and she placed her hand on the knob. Taking a breath, she didn’t exhale until the door opened. The familiar scent of her childhood hit her like a freight train, and she felt an odd pull in her chest. “Someone must have been here to tidy up since...” she sighed. “Since I was last here.”

👀Are you hoping for a boy or a girl?
“I’m hoping for a healthy baby, most of all. Gender is the least of my concerns. But I keep having dreams of a girl baby, so maybe? I don’t know. Just a healthy baby. That’s all.”

👀Who are your favorite people in NYC?
“This is a trick question because I like most people here. But if I had to pick--Jason, Nathalie, Regina, Joaquin, Kian and Kai.”

👀 Dream job?
“I think I’m already doing my dream job--maybe it’d be to not be a para anymore and just a full fledged special education teacher. But then I’d have to go back to school, and with the baby coming--well, I think it’s better that I just stick to where I am now. Although, when I was little, I did want to be a princess very badly.”
