Slip Away (I got bored this took about five minutes shh it's terrible I know I'm sorry)

Dax was sick of being alone, sick of the demons hammering nails through his mind in the guise of bittersweet memories, sick of the pain corroding his skull and the taut chains that kept his heart from beating and this apathetic state of agony that had settled over him like ocean mist ever since he left. His skin burned beneath the desert sun, granules of sand sculpted into his skeleton, his every thought twisted into a distorted oasis of broken memory. Symphonies curdled on his tongue with every step he took, dry ice in his veins training to escape where his pulse licked the taut skin across his wrist. Words.drifted through his head, shattered remnants of long-forgotten dreams chewed down from nightmare to fantasy; death here became the sweetest salvation, a blessing folded into being from a thousand furious curses.

And then his legs collapsed beneath him, hot sand screaming against his face, body drained of everything that was keeping him alive. His lungs were shallow, empty arteries tingling, mind overcome with dizzying ghosts that called death like a cloak over his ribs; his heartbeat thumped uselessly at his chest, a dull drum of token hope that was already starting to fade, defeated by the sea of futility surrounding it. He closed his eyes, sand laced through his sparse lashes, fingers running through the.sharp grains and mourning the smashed hourglass they had fallen from, the fragile husk that held deserts within a shifting spectrum of time.

He had been stupid, allowing Chase and his friends to fool him with their petty lies and false serpentine smiles. Stupid and weak, craving the lights of kindness that defined their eyes and shaped their faces; it only sharpened the blade of loneliness that cut him down to size as he lay here now, cradled by the desert as it lay poison kisses across his cheeks and began the slow corrosion of his soul. Just a few more minutes…a little while longer, and he would finally taste freedom, sweet enough to kill the sour taste of lost love and isolation and the agony of constant remembering.

He tried to talk, but found himself lacking in the energy it took to draw breath, let alone carve words from the prosaic fog shrouding his heart. No breath…his body trembled, starved of oxygen, his throat filling with ash and embers that blocked the life from his lungs, and it hurt, but the pain was already slipping out of reach, snowflakes on his fingers like swathes of the skies of his homelands.

Dax’s body was loathe to relinquish the grasp on life it held so dearly, but he couldn’t fight any longer. Abandoned. Bruised. Broken. There was no point in hanging on. No hope, no saviour to place his faith in this time.

With a sigh, he let bliss fade into his muscles as he slipped away and remembered what it felt like to dream.

yesterday I spent the entire evening trying to work out what it would feel like to be dissolved

and whether a body that was taken apart cell by cell and then put back together again (assuming that there would be the technology to do this in the future) would still be alive, if everything was put back exactly how it was before))
