Expectations

“Masculinity” refers to the traits that are associated with men, are expected of men, and “belong” to men. It ranges from styles of dress, to social practices, to positions in society, to personality traits.

Some of these expectations, including misogyny, homophobia, transmisogyny, and a focus on violence, are labeled “toxic masculinity”. It is expected that men will treat others poorly.

People try to encourage a different view of masculinity, try to change these expectations, try to remove the negative ones.

Why doesn’t it work?

Essentialism

Gender essentialism: it’s not just that men should be violent, it’s the belief that men are inherently violent, that these expectations are based on some biological truth, and thus beyond reproach.

This is nonsense, of course. These expectations are just that: expectations. Men and women are not terribly different.

But this belief, nonsense that it is, is very very prevalent. What better and more vile way to excuse the rapist than claim “they couldn’t control themselves”? What better way to frame an attack against one part of masculinity as an attack on men as a whole? What better way to resist even the most mild criticism?

Be better [than you]

People sometimes talk about the “positive” traits of masculinity: strength, directness, courage, practicality.

But what exactly does that say about everyone else?

Every trait you put in the box of masculinity is one denied to anyone else. If you say men are good at something, you are implying that they are better at it. So don’t.

What’s left

So what is masculinity, really? What’s left after you take away the toxicity, the essentialism, the exclusion?

Not much, really. A style of dress, I suppose.

People trying to frame some image of “wholesome masculinity” are doomed because that doesn’t exist. All you’re doing is advertising a look.

And they are a fine pile of clothes I should add. I don’t disparage anyone who likes wearing them, just as I don’t disparage anyone for feeling the weight of the expectations tied to them.

But you have to remember that these expectations have no substance. Do not fall into thinking the clothes are magic just because they are comfortable. Please.

When I first joined Tumblr, I had no idea what I was walking into. There’s no manual for navigating this wild, untamed corner of the internet. My first moment here? I’ve seen campaigns soar past their goals, bringing hope to families barely holding on. But I’ve also seen campaigns like mine, ones that fight tooth and nail for every single dollar, every reblog, every addition, and every ounce of hope. My family’s lives depend on this.

It hasn’t been easy. Zionists flood all Palestinian words with hate, twisting truths and spreading lies. They aim to discredit us, to make people doubt us. It’s exhausting. Some nights, I sit with my phone in my hands, wondering if this fight is too big for me. But then something beautiful happens: a donation comes through, a kind message appears, or someone I’ve never met reblogs my story with words that feel like a warm embrace.

And through it all, people are starting to see the truth. The hate doesn’t drown us; it sharpens our voices. Every day, more people step forward to stand with us, to say, “I see you, I hear you, and I’m with you.” It’s those moments that keep me going.

You’ve done more for my family than I could ever put into words. But the reality is, we’re not there yet. My family is still waiting for a chance to breathe, to live without fear, to fill their empty stomachs with warm food, and to wrap themselves in clothes thick enough to keep out the bitter cold. They’re hungry, they’re freezing, and I can’t do this alone.

This fight is hard, but it’s not hopeless. Strangers have become friends, and friends have become family. Some of you have shown up in ways I never imagined, treating my family’s survival as if it were your own. That kind of solidarity? It’s powerful.

when I drew this comic 3 years ago I had NO idea how far it would reach. I'm happy to finally share a corrected version with proper abbreviations, and even MORE state names of indigenous origin ♥️

however, the goal of this comic was to inspire people to do your OWN research on indigenous history. To question everything we have been taught, and everything that has been pointedly left out. This erasure, this “forgetting”, of history is not just of the past… it is happening now. - Across so-called Canada, the US, and US-occupied islands, native women are victims of murder at 10-12x the rate of non-native people, and are the most likely to go missing without being searched for by the law. - Native reservations have the highest rates of poverty in the US, with over HALF of tribal homes with no access to clean water (with more joining this list by the year) - Native people are 6-10x more likely to be unhoused than the rest of the population, and native teens suffer suicide rates higher than any other demographic. This list of modern day genocide goes on (thank you for compiling @theindigenousanarchist <3) and yet take a look at those environmental stats!

Native people manage to do SO much for the planet as a whole - thanklessly - and with all this stacked against them. Don't even get me started on kin fighting in south america. Could you imagine if there was help? #landback is resistance to genocide, and it is the key to saving our warming earth.

So look into it and the other hashtags, cuz a cartoon goose ain't a substitute for a proper education. Love to my grandparents who always kept a map of tribal territories of turtle island on their wall, to speaking on our Tsalagi & Saponi heritage.
