Seeing people try to defend the lack of racial/ethnic diversity on Tumblr is... wow. So let me share a reminder: It used to be better! Still dominantly white, but better than what it is now, at least. Then everyone got tired of the "blackouts" and other mostly Black-led conversations around racism because it was "ruining their fandom fun" or something idk and quite literally chased out so many bloggers of colour through harassment campaigns from the user-base and massive staff-led blog purges. This was not even that long ago, btw.

I can think of so many beloved mutuals who had to leave this site for their mental health because they just couldn't take it anymore.

Tumblr deserves every shred of criticism it gets for being so white after all that.

I think this blog is helping me learn how to be less parasocial because before now I’ve only ever heard it used when referring to crazy insane fans who think their favorite blogger/youtuber/streamer/whatever is in love with them but this is making me realize that that isn’t the case. parasocialness can happen even with seemingly small things. all in all be mean to your anons it helps them and I’m sorry if this is parasocial in and of itself

the thing about parasociality is that it's undergone a rather bizarre transformation wherein the connotation is almost always a negative one, when the actual definition is merely describing a very human ability to feel connected to and concerned with people who we've never met and even "people" who might not really exist - the term was coined in the 50s to describe the attachment and investment that people felt in fictional television characters.

there's nothing innately negative OR positive about a parasocial relationship. to your example, a relationship doesn't become parasocial when you convince yourself that your favorite media personality is in love with you, but rather when you develop a sense of fondness for them in the first place.

I have no illusions about now attached my favorite youtube yoga instructor feels to me, personally (she doesn't, at all, because we've never directly interacted) but I feel warmly about her all the same, frequently feel cheered after following along with her yoga routines, and will be sad when the dog who appears in many of her videos inevitably dies. that's a parasocial relationship and it's fine! it's not bad to care about people you don't know personally, and that is arguably an important thing to be able to do.

Wish I could meet Kyoko Sakura and let her know that her family's murder was absolutely not her fault and her father was actually just a horrible person and she should've never been put into that kind of situation in the first place. It's just so sad to me that she genuinely believes it's her fault when it really isn't. She was raised in what was basically a cult (or the beginnings of one) ostracized from knowing any form of normal and her father was literally willing to let his family starve because of him rather than... idk doing literally anything else. Move to a place where they won't be outcasted and get a new paying job or something.

It's also really sad to think there are people like Kyoko in real life raised in situations where they think their horrible parents are good people and forced to suffer because of them, and blaming themselves for whatever misfortunate events befall them.

i think a lot about like. suirei being constantly stuck in her indecision (performing the assassination tasks perfectly yet wanting nothing to happen) vs shisui's stubborn decisiveness (maomao, if you had a chance to drink a rare poison, what would you do?)

suirei, who can't decide what outcome she wants out of fear vs shisui, who has decided what her fate will be since the beginning. suirei who only begins to run at the last second vs shisui who smiles in both reassurance and triumph as she falls to her death.

the way kim dokja starts off treating telling yoo sangah his story as the cruelest thing he could do to her. takes her for a walk and tells her about his shit childhood and condemns himself all the while as if he's doing some horrible thing to her. and she responds by holding his hand in a quiet comfort, treating his story with the utmost care. the way it parallels and contrasts with kim dokja taking yoo sangah inside his library later on. letting her read every little sordid detail of his life. not out of a desire to hurt her but out of a desire to save her. and her responding the same way she did then.....holding his story gently......treating it with kindness.....because to her knowing his story was never a burden.
