in the old times of fandom there were many different ways to name a ship. if you were feeling lazy you could just do name/name or namexname. you could have your portmanteaus, à la spirk. you could have your homestuck style TwoNames naming convention. you might occasionally get your more creative names like wolfstar. and some fandoms would be absolutely obsessed with initials and brevity; why have erik/christine when you could be E/C? in 2014 we all collectively discovered creative tumblr tagging systems and so every ship on here was called shit like #otp: i am the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition. in 2018 every ship was called Shenanigans Bros or a random pair of barely connected nouns that were completely inscrutable to anyone who wasn't in the discord server where somebody made it up. in 2024 we have realised our madness of recent years and attempted to throw it back to the good old days, but we have done so without regard for restoring the diversity of the ecosystem and so every ship has a portmanteau regardless of whether the names actually sound good together. by this i mean i just saw a ship poll that just referred to jesus/judas as JEDUS?????????

you're not a monster. you're you. you're flawed, yes, but you're also incredibly alive. just human. real. capable of great things, capable of change and growth, too. don't define yourself by the inner critic lashing out at you. you're not your worst moments.

When someone gives the advice of “don’t be afraid to disappoint your parents” they don’t just mean taking music theory in college or starting a YouTube channel.

It also means wearing things they might not approve of. Using accommodations that they might not think you need. Not falling for their guilt trips. Eating when you’re hungry, not when it suits them and their idea of your weight or health. Making your own friends instead of seeking the stamp of approval from them.

Of course, some parents are stricter than others, and some use abuse to keep you from expressing yourself. But do what you can, even if it seems small.

Otherwise, when your parents are no longer in the picture, you’ll try to find it somewhere else to get validation. A strict boss, an abusive partner, a selfish friend.

Going against your parent’s wishes is developmentally healthy. Not doing so stunts your independence and self-regulation. You shouldn’t be living to constantly please others, even the people who love you.

one criticism of john green's books i find genuinely really funny is how all the teenage characters are "unrealistically" eloquent and verbose and talk too much like adults and "no teenager talks like that!!" because like, on the one hand, fair, i see why people say that

but also like. as a former neurodivergent teenager who had trouble talking to other people my age but fared better with adults, and definitely took pride in having an advanced vocabulary and reading above my grade level, and was a Pretentious Bitch since at least third grade, i absolutely talked more like a john green protagonist than anything else. i'm sure i was insufferable at times but you know it served me well when it came time to write college app essays
