Some small snippets of sweethearts for the season

'The moss warred with the lichen for purchase upon the soaring surfaces of the ancient site of sacrifice and worship. In another era this was a sacred shrine, a place of power and prestige erected by the faithful to their glorious gods. Now, there was but one lonesome caretaker, unknown, uncelebrated, unacknowledged, who carefully cleaned and cleared small swaths of invading ivies, removed the mosses that could be loosened, and lay into the lichen wherever it dominated. Once there were worshipers to wash and tend to the statue that served sentinel over their spiritual serenity, now there was but the one, not a devotee but devoted and determined to caring for the crumbling carving of a god that never was. Where once the blood of many docile and less than docile offerings stained the stones and washed away the ills of the illuminated laity, roots and rain tore asunder altars and broke benches to bits. The lonely little landlord fought the imperious intrusion of the persistent plants, all in service, not to the gods nor their memory, but to its nest and the young the fastidious fowl fostered there.'

"This pond was perfect. This pond was her everything, everything she wanted, everything she needed, everything and everywhere she had ever known or would need to know. This pond was her perfect, pristine paradise. When first she awoke, opening her eyes for the first time in her ovum, she just knew where she was, where she belonged, where she would always be, and it was here, among the reeds and cattails, the sludge and slime, the murk and mire, here among the other denizens of the petite pool of water, be they friend, foe, or food. She was happy here, in this place, this pond that was her universe, and she had no doubt it would always be here for her, because it always had been, and she had no notion of potentialities she had never perceived. She was serene and satisfied as she swam its breadth and width, for it was wild, and it was wonderful, and it was her whole world. Oh to be a water lily, where all of life is like a wish, where there's no worries and no wrongs, where the only season is wet, and no drought will dry and deny one of their dwellings or dreams. But that could never happen here, for this pond was perfect and there was no impending apocalypse, as there never had been before." Just Another Tumor...

It was just another tumor to the doctors and imaging technicians in the lab, just one more routine diagnostic procedure revealing a potentially malignant mass spreading its spindly tendrils between the lobes and folds of their poor patient's brain. Tragic in its own way to be sure, but simply routine in their medical careers. So they were caught a little off guard when the man on the table, upon emerging from the machine and catching sight of the cancer they had found, let out a blood curdling scream and tried to climb over the medical equipment to get away from what vaguely resembled a giant spider in his brain.
