❛  it’s  .  .  .  not much.  but i thought gracie might enjoy it.  ❜   she’s been spending more and more time outside of the gates lately.  busying herself on supply runs and whatever else she can think of.  it’s easier to be alone with her thoughts when she’s out there.  things are beginning to feel too real at alexandria and it’s suffocating.  the comfort of safety and a home is a dangerous thing to have in a world where it seems you are destined to lose everything.  the thought of it scares poppy more than she’d like to admit.

❛  what’s on your mind,  kiddo?  ❜   poppy knows better than to try to pry anything out of mercy.  she’ll talk if she wants to,  but she can’t help but worry about the girl.  her maternal instincts are not so easily ignored and pushed down like they used to be.  she had hidden them so deep that remembering them was painful,  but that was before mercy and things were different now.

his optimism,  the way he looks at this life,  it’s difficult for her to wrap her head around.  maybe it’s a product of being alone out there for too long.  it changes you in ways she can’t talk about.  even after being at Alexandria for months,  she struggles to connect with the others,  to find her place,  to feel like she belongs.  there is living and then there is surviving.  she knows this,  but what happens when you’ve only done the latter for years that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to just live?

they’re safe (at least for now),  but if she listens closely poppy can hear the groans of the dead ones.  some linger outside the door of the abandoned house they find themselves in for the night and her heart beats a little faster every time they do.  they’re safe here,  she reassures herself.  says it over and over again in her head,  but part of her doesn’t believe that they’re truly safe anywhere anymore.    ❝  you should get some sleep.  i’ll take first watch.  ❞
