Okay Mario!
TRM Round 1: Super Mario Odyssey (T. rex) vs. Banjo Tooie (T. rex Banjo)
Super Mario Odyssey (T. rex) – A core gameplay element of Super Mario Odyssey is Cappy, Mario’s new, living, hat who can be thrown onto enemies in order to capture them, which then allows the player to take control of said enemy for a time. Naturally, this applies to ordinary Mario foes like Goombas and Chain Chomps, but also to far stranger options. Few captureable creatures in the game are odder than this, a highly detailed T. rex, which can be found in one of the game’s first worlds. Though you can only control it for a limited time, it’s a lot of fun crashing around as a massive dinosaur in a Mario game. Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, compared controlling the T. rex to riding Yoshi, which makes some sense, even if it is deeply silly.
Banjo Tooie (T. rex Banjo) – Seventeen years before Mario transformed into a T. rex, one of his platforming peers did the same on the Nintendo 64. In both of the original Banjo-Kazooie games, the bear and bird duo are able to perform a wide range of transformations with the help of their magical (and problematic) friends. In Banjo-Tooie, this includes not one but two T. rexes, an adult and a baby. Each has its own abilities to help traverse the paleo-themed Terrydactyland, but they both can be seen wearing Banjo’s signature yellow shorts and blue backpack.
