Sometimes you encounter a proposal that is so daft that you think to yourself, “The author can’t be serious!” In today’s column, I’d like to discuss an example of this sort that comes from one of the world’s most eminent moral philosophers, Martha C. Nussbaum. In her article, “A Peopled Wilderness,” appearing in the New York Review of Books, December 8, 2022, Nussbaum suggests that we need to think seriously about curbing predation in nature. It disturbs her that animals eat other animals: this is not how things ought to be. We must be careful in what we try to do to correct this morally bad state of affairs, since through lack of knowledge, we may worsen things; but this is no excuse to let matters slide.

To be clear, she is not just proposing that we should make sure that lions can’t get into the deer cage at the zoo; she is talking about the possibility of getting animals in the wild to cease to kill and eat each other. Her idea illustrates and extends a besetting sin of contemporary moral and political philosophy, its idle utopianism. The ordinary circumstances of the human condition are rejected, and philosophers devise fantastic schemes to remake the social and political world to their own liking

As bizarre as this is, there is a genuine movement to try and either turn predators into herbivores;

Realistically this is never going to happen but it’s still wild that anyone could think like this. Unsurprising that a lot of people involved in the movement are extremist animal rights activists. I’ve also seen fox feeders say they deliberately overfeed wild foxes to stop them hunting as it’s ‘wrong’ for them to kill other animals.

listen, if you believe Glass Onion's message of bashing super rich people is a form of "self"-critique, then you clearly don't understand who the 1% are.

When Rian Johnson calls out fake Elon Musk in his fun detective movie, this is not an attempt at "self-deprecating humor". Rian Johnson is "I own nice houses"-rich, he is not "I control nations, wars, economies, and the livelihoods of millions"-rich like Elon Musk is.

Rian Johnson is closer in his wealth to you than he is to Elon Musk, by far.

I am all for holding rich people accountable, I support calling out the Hollywood industry. But we *need* to learn to tell billionaires and millionaires apart, or our criticism of the political system will be fraught.

When I think about how modern people see art as something exclusively upper class, I am reminded of that post in which someone stated that so many brilliant artists went unnoticed in families because they were sisters, mothers and grandmother's.

Of course, the idea that art was only for the rich as opposed to something all humans have enjoyed throughout time is inherently ridiculous, but it seems to particularly diminish the art of women. Those who embroidered, knit, crochet and made elaborate patterns and gorgeous tapestries and clothes. I think about it all the time

hey i know a lot of you cannot donate, but wikipedia NEEDS money to keep functioning. AO3 was able to surpass their fundraising goal in days, but wikipedia has been trying to get donations for months now to no avail. that’s not a “don’t donate to AO3”, that’s a “also donate to wikipedia” or “donate to wikipedia instead, because AO3 is doing good”. if any of you can donate, please do. wikipedia is one of the best things to happen on the internet, and i would hate to see it with tons of ads or worse.
